Demo discs with unreleased games

I have begun going thru my stacks of xbox, xbox 360, ps1, and ps2 demos, mostly from magazines that had monthly discs included with not only demos but also videos and other bonus content. Curious if any one has ever found a disc (for any system) that has a playable demo for a game that ended up not getting released. Theres gotta be at least a few i would imagine.

Comments

  • Only thing that comes to mind is Bounty Arms for PSX, which was on a monthly demo disc series in Japan.
  • Titan A.E. for PS1 never came out but has a playable demo.
  • Looking online Thrill Kill for PS1 was the other one I couldn't remember, it had a playable demo but was cancelled.
  • One of the DS download stations has an unreleased game on it, but I don't remember which volume.
  • I have thought about this topic before though--would a demo of an unreleased game count as a prototype?

This is what I was going to say. I remember that game looked crazy in the magazines. I think there's a full version for download for PC or something out there.

The ISO was/is widely available. I can remember in the late 90s playing a burn of it at my cousins' house.

  • There's like three different builds of Thrill Kill that are out there, aren't there? I think I read that once. I never heard there was a demo that was given away, though. Are you guys are referring to a demo disc officially given away? I wasn't aware it was playable anywhere until those protos were leaked.
  • does motal kombat x for ps3 and xbox 360 count?

it was supposed to be delayed by a few weeks from the ps4 and xbox one release but never came out.

still a lot of ppl mad about that one...i know quite a few even pre-ordered it. occasionally someone will ask for it, and you have to explain what happened...
  • Titan A.E. like mentioned is a perfect example.

Also, on the issue 39 disc of OXM there is a hidden demo of Metal Wolf Chaos which unfortunately (and surprisingly) didn't make it to the states.

Pretty sure it was Vol 9 and was Gauntlet.
  • The very next thread I read after this one was the one about NBA Elite 11. It seems to have had a demo released though the game itself was canceled.

Yeah I think it had a PSN demo.

2KSports has just beaten up that franchise the last decade. Live was cancelled again this year. And it definitely happened for Live 2013 too. I feel like 2013 had a demo.

I'd like for 2k to make NFL games again. Madden would slowly die as well.

I am not sure which ones are out there but I still have whatever copy was on the streets of NYC back in the 90's. It was totaly legit  the stand on the corner and the made up cases and such. You had to have a modded ps1 though to play it but the copy I have seems just abour complete from what I can tell.

  • I don't know if this counts, but there was definitely an old Xbox/XB360 demo disc with the old version of TimeShift on it before they scrapped the whole thing and started over, so that's interesting in a "prototype" kinda sense.

I'm also like 90% sure there were old OXM demo discs with the Xbox ports of Cold Winter and The Red Star on them, both of which came out on PS2 but never saw their Xbox versions get finished.
  • Hellgate for Dreamcast had a demo disc that was only given to developers, the final game was cancelled.

Badass! I should track that disc down, I was always curious about the Xbox version. Now if only I can find out if I hallucinated that Cold Winter demo or not, I LOVED that game on PS2 but would have much rather played it on Xbox...

Volume 10.  And it is Gauntlet.  If you do want to kinda play the game, the same engine was used to make G.I. Joe for the DS.
  • Ken Levine (Bioshock creator) made a game called The Lost for PS2 and Xbox but never released it. People that still have a hold of these should release them to the public. Maybe someone could emulate it or put it on discs that PS2 and Xbox could read, you never know.

From a Rolling Stone interview this week:

"It was a game called The Lost. We made it right after System Shock 2. It was a game about a woman. Her daughter dies, and she makes a deal with the devil to go to hell to try to get her back. What it's really about is the process of accepting loss. It's a game about mourning. It reflects some things that I had seen in my own life at that point.

    Is it a whole game?

It's a finished game, for PS2 and original Xbox. It exists somewhere. We never released it because it wasn't up to our standards of quality. The game just wasn't good. I think it would have really hurt us.

It was a Zelda-style, third-person action game. We had never made a game like that. Zelda is genius, Mozart-level stuff, how you find these tools that are both useful gameplay items but also essentially keys. You go through a dungeon and you get the bomb. All of a sudden you look around and see the cracks all over the walls. He's seeded in all this brilliant opportunity for me! The overworld/underworld structure is brilliant.

We tried to create a game like that and we very quickly realized it wasn't a game I was really cut out to design."

I couldn't find any info on a Cold Winter demo and none of my disks have it (I am missing a handful though)

Nice to find someone else who actually has heard of the game (let alone enjoys it). I used to play with my brother and his friend when it came out.

I might have been just making shit up, then. The only real remembrance I have of the Cold Winter Xbox version is the fact that I was working at Gamestop at the time, and my girlfriend at the time worked in the R-Zone of Toys R Us, and we both had listings for an Xbox version with a placeholder date, at which point I just caved in and bought the PS2 version. (Same thing happened with the PC version of Metal Gear Solid 3, oddly enough.) I'd love to see an Xbox build, even if it's probably not that different (or completed).
