Amiibo Collectors...

I've started collecting Amiibos and I've kept them all sealed. The problem is that sealed ones take up much more space than loose ones, and that you can't actually use the Amiibos on your 3DS or Wii U games when they're sealed. On the other hand, I love having stuff "complete in box" whenever possible. But if you open your Amiibos, the boxes are pretty much irreparable, and that cool box art goes to waste.

But another plus for opening them is that you can import ones from sites like Play Asia (who btw is having a huge sale on Amiibos, including ones that are pretty rare in the U.S.), and the figures themselves are the exact same, down to the text on the bottom of them. But if you keep them sealed, you can't import them without your OCD kicking in that the box art is different.

So collectors, do you keep your Amiibos sealed, or open them up?

  • Yeah I hate that the boxes are ruined once opened. But yeah I keep em loose
  • I keep my collection sealed. They do take up a ton of space though so they are just packed away in boxes.
  • At first I kept all of them sealed, traded and paid high prices when they were actually somewhat rare... Someday I was tired of trying to find some place to fit all of them without ever looking good, and ripped out all of those damn boxes. Best thing I've done! They look great loose, and you can get them cheap from Japan. I would open them if I were you.
  • I would definitely keep them sealed personally because of my OCD.

But it makes SOOO much more sense to open and display them that way.

I would totally have a little table and display them just they do in Melee.
  • You could always leave the ones that are still kinda considered rare sealed and open the others. For instance, Gold Mario or Robin might be worth leaving sealed.

Personally I leave all mine sealed since I use them for display and really like how the boxes look.
  • Oh shit. Are Amiibo threads coming back???
  • I seriously forgot about these. Do they still make them? Or all they all just new old stock?
  • I own exactly 30 amiibos and all but 2 are still sealed in their plastic prisons lol
  • Ive started opening them

Yeah they are still making them. For awhile it was a lot of Animal Crossing stuff which doesn't exactly make waves. But I believe Cloud is about to come out and that will probably get people talking.
  • The rare ones are the open ones lol. Seriously though people open and use them. I see them at less than MSRP at big box stores to this day. A $36 set was $10 this weekend.
  • Cloud and Bayonetta will both be awesome. Corrin will be great for us FE fanatics.
  • You can't use them while they're sealed? Skylanders 1 Nintendo 0

I keep mine sealed, but then again I only have Pikachu.
  • I open mine. They look stupid in the box, my house ain't fucking Walmart.
  • I did keep mine sealed while collecting, but got out of it last year. Sold most of them off since then. The only ones I still collect and open for display are Zelda related. So much better out of the box, I must say. I also still have the whole Super Mario series sealed, as well as first print Villager. Looking forward to the 30th anniversary Zelda ones, and am debating on whether or not to get the next wave of Mario series. I'd love a Tails amiibo from Sonic, and a Punch-Out!!! wave would be awesome.

Oh, I also got Wolf Link + Midna from Australia for a good price and was very happy with it.  Even though I was going to open it anyway, it was packaged in a little box and arrived mint.  Didn't expect that for free shipping.

    Keep 'em sealed.

  • I have both. I have every amiibo except for the Mega Yarn Yoshi, Skymiibo, and three of the newer Animal Crossings loose but I bought duplicates to keep CIB for the Smash line.

As others said, CIB takes up a lot of room. I have mine packed away and have the loose ones displayed in a cabinet. When I first started collecting CIB I didn't take into account just how many there were, and how much space that is. I'll honestly probably sell them down the road, and I'm not expecting them to rise in value too much aside from a few.

So if you're going to actually collect and display, I'd say loose.
  • I have like 4 of them still sealed up, the other 30 or so are opened. out of the 4 that are sealed, three ofthem i have an opened version of to use.
  • I've only got Little Mac and the 3 pack with ROB in it. They're sealed currently, but I really think I'll open them at some point. I think the only other ones I really even want are Mega Man and the Famicom ROB. I don't have a WiiU, and don't know that I'm getting one any time soon, but they're cool figures, and if I can figure out where I want to put them, I'll be opening them.
  • They are way too big sealed, I open all of mine but I only have a few dozen. I don't think Amiibos are going to be worth anything in the future, especially since everyone interesting in collecting them buys them and never opens them, so I might as well open them and get to handle and play with them.
  • Tried to go sealed, but 1: They take up an ungodly amount of space, 2: I really want to use them for 3DS/Wii U games, and 3: They display beautifully loose, so I opened those babies up. Glad I did

    Zero
  • I keep mine sealed.

I don't have the equipment, time, or desire to use them anyway, I just wanted some cool inexpensive figures. Plus the box art looks pretty cool.
  • If theyd just release the last 3 smash amiibo then id be done.

oh and sealed. Unless i want to use it then i buy a second one
  • My Splatoon amiibo are OoB, since they actually have in-game functionality worth giving a damn about. All of my Smash amiibo are NIB though.
  • All of mine are open. I have no room to store sealed boxes.
  • I couldn't even properly display mine before, and had some rows three figures deep. That was one of the factors in me selling them off. The only four I purposely bought duplicates of to keep one sealed and open the other, were Link, Zelda and Ganondorf, and also Toad, for it's usefulness in Treasure Tracker... Which I still don't have.

Same. I only collected the Smash series and a few other odd ball ones. I have dupes of a few I used for Smash like Ry, Samus, etc. and then Toad for Treasure Tracker.
  • Keep em sealed until someone invents a special amiibo opening tool. It seems like it would be best to be opened from the bottom as a flap-like opening.
