The Wii U is the Most Expensive Console of the Current Gen

So the cheapest version of the Xbox One has been $250 for a little while now. Today, I saw that the original version of the PS4 was dropped to $279 (I guess due to the release of the Slim). And yet the Wii U is still $299. So that means the Wii U is the most expensive console of the current generation right now........ Let that sink in a moment. And yes, I'm aware that there are other versions of the XBox One and PS 4 that are more expensive, but that really changes nothing.  The Wii U is too damn expensive.

  • Dropping the prices wouldnt be a wise business move from Nintendo. The (limited) increased sales wouldn't offset the reduced profit margin. They are better off making what they can on Wii U and waiting for NX.
  • I guess the advantage of not competing with Sony and Microsoft in terms of hardware specs and software, is that Nintendo has its own niche slice of the market. Nobody else has all their first party licenses, so they can charge $299
  • I get the system is expensive to produce and I get that they don't really have to compete with Microsoft and Sony, but it's still frustrating and I'm voting with my wallet. I'll own a PS4 before I own a Wii U, and I honestly thought that would never happen when this generation started.
  • I bought mine brand new with the Mario/Luigi game for $249 CAD a few years ago. Their price has gone up!
  • Honestly the best deal now is probably a refurbished one directly from Nintendo for $200 with Nintendo Land. I guess some retailers might clearance their remaining stock this Christmas but I wouldn't hold your breath. If you really wanted one, the best deal was the Smash/Splat bundle last Christmas for $250. Plus you got physical copies of the games if you bought it at GameStop.
  • Really surprised they never dropped it, they'll probably drop it to clear stock once the NX is released. Hoping that's the case, I want to pickup a second one to softmod to play games from Europe and Japan without risking my main one.
  • and it was worth every penny. great system with great games.
  • Yea although it may be under powered compared to its competitors it by far has the best games hands down.
  • Locally you can pick up a WiiU for $180 - $200, xbone is around $250 and PS4 about $275.

Granted that's the used (flea) market.
  • Wii U is dead... just let it die in peace.
  • You kill the Wii U, you kill Super Mario Maker.

I agree. I have never understood why so many dislike it.
  • I haven't bought any of this current generations systems (yet), but that is going to change with the new PS4's when they're released shortly. Never owned a Wii-u but my nephew does; can't say I am terribly impressed with it. Even though I love a good Mario game as much as the next person, and Star Fox too, first party games can only get you so far. To me it feels as gimmicky as the N64 was for it's time, and that doesn't conjure up good memories. 300$ to play a handful of good games (with Mario Maker being the real system seller?) Eh, I'll pass.
  • I got mine off craigslist. Practically unused Mario 3d world set. Came with Mario 3d, Nintendoland, Luigi Bros U, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, and Mario Maker all like new. Cost me $220. Point being, find a better deal than full retail. They're out there.
  • People don't sell their Wii U systems. We've had 2 come in since it came out. 2! And one was broken! We've wolfed through hundreds of 360s and PS3s in that time. People who have Wii U love Wii U. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo figured out that the elasticity of demand was low on the system. The other thing is that Nintendo knows People Who Care buy Wii Us and make the extra effort to buy them off of Nintendo's website.
  • It's also very hard to find (good) second hand games for a decent price for this thing. My guess is that collecting for this later on is going to be a bitch.
  • A price drop without software to support it won't do much. Other than Paper Mario the release calendar is a black hole for the rest of the year. No reason to cut into profits to drum up support for a legacy console. Full speed ahead on the NX.

Yeah, I know it's been the same old story over at the Wii U discussion thread, but it's true. I never see quality used Wii U games. If you do it's usually the whole bundle with Mario Kart, Mario Maker, Smash, or a couple big name games like the lot posted above. But games like Luigi U, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Devil's 3rd, Lego City, Bayonetta 2 etc. etc. , don't come up near as often as you would think. Not saying they are rare, but it's different than collecting for older systems. Then there are a number of games like NBA2K13, Planes, Turbo Stunt Squad, Need for Speed and others that seem to be more or less non existent in the used market. I have NEVER seen a  used copy of Need for Speed and I've been collecting for the system since release. I skipped on it once when it was full price and never saw it again (I know it's still relatively cheap on eBay).
  • I got mine almost brand new with several games off CL for $100. What?
