Data East Arcade Classics...why so expensive?

Seriously why has this game become so expensive. It's not like there are any spectactular games on this. My intial guess is it had an extremely low print run. It's developed by G1M2. Never heard of them but if they are related to M2 than the emulation is probably really good.

  • I should have kept this, bought it on release, but the games just aren't that good. They are mostly arcade versions which weren't released elsewhere, and I think the print run was really small so it's likely that's why it's gone up so much. I think we're going to see a ton of low print Wii game follow suit in the next couple years.
  • Perhaps there are people who really loved those Data East games and consider the game a true collectors item.

As you might know, the company went defunct a few years ago.
  • I remember this compilation being extremely hard to find on release. I'm pretty sure I had to order it online to get it. Plus it's not on any other platforms.

There are quite a few good games on the disc in my opinion. Bad Dudes, Secret Agent, Caveman Ninja, Burger Time. Plus there is some bonus content and you can unlock music tracks. Plus you have co-op mode in most games. I wouldn't pay the going rate for it, but it was definitely worth picking when it was cheaper.
  • It's expensive because most people in this hobby are too stupid to just use MAME.
  • People like collections and physical media
  • Hype, uncommon, playable or as that translates to the collecting community GOTTA BUY IT BEFORE IT GETS EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE, SUPER RAREZ, HIDDEN GEMS, *************xxxxXXXXxXxx HOLY GRAIL xxxXXXxxxXXXx*********
  • I noticed the price on this, recently and was also trying to figure it out. Gamestop sold them for $20, but seems to not have any in stock 100 miles from me. I thought it would be fun to get it since I am really into arcades, but since GS didnt have them, I went to ebay and saw the going rate and about pooped myself. Hopefully, I can find a copy on the cheap someday...
  • It's been one of those more expensive, uncommon games for a couple years now. You could get them for less than $13 about a year ago from GS when they were willing to ship them to other stores. I got 5 of them and they were selling easily for $35-40 at the time. Looks like it shot up quite a bit.
  • Wow I never knew this game was so pricey. I've always liked good compilations games. My favorite one is Taito Legends 2, which has one of my favorite arcade games - Dungeon Magic (not the NES game)

  • I bought this a long time ago for Magical Drop III. It's got some good stuff on it.
  • I got $70 or $80 for a sealed one over Xmas on Amazon.
  • It's expensive because it was only released on one console (Wii). Many of the compilations got multi-console releases so there is more pent up demand on this one. The other two that have been inching up in price in recent years is the SNK Arcade and Metal Slug Anthologies. Both are on Wii and PS2 as well as a PSP version too.

What are you talking about? Everyone knows what MAME, Emulation and Visual Pinball are, and if they don't, chances are this hobby is just a phase for them. I have been wanting this collection for a long time because I love arcade gaming and going for highscores and as a true fan of these games of course I would want to own this particular port of them. No matter what imperfections come along with it. That's the fun of multiple ports they don't have to be arcade perfect. If I want perfect I will go to Dorkys in Tacoma or play on MAME. Personally I love to compare the differences and play games I love with a new experience. Especially in the days before emulated ports..playing with complete different graphics and gameplay physics sometimes more lousy then others is totally fun and worth the price to some if its a hard to find game.

I wouldn't bother arguing with him. All his input is always either negative or just crabby. I swear the guy doesn't know how to speak positively about anything!
  • Tecmo Arcade for Xbox is another console exclusive but way cheaper
  • I never really got into these compilations much. Although some do have a few cool added features,I'd rather just play the original versions (on MAME of course) that everyone loved playing in the arcades, which is why these compilations even exist.
  • I bought this a long time ago on a whim since I love compilation discs. Iicr, it was something like $15 used at the time.
  • @ Breakbeatz Taito Legends 2 on the PS2 was awesome and had a good selection of games especially G Darius, Syvlion, Raystorm, and Dungeon Magic but don't forget about the Pal Xbox version which had Ray Force and one of my favorite Action RPG's Cadash   which pretty much seals the deal for me and it's region free to boot.

The PSP ports are pretty mediocre, though. I decided to get the PSP port of Metal Slug Anthology because it was only $12, and the load times are pretty bad.

That, and it being fairly limited doesn't help.   I only heard about it because I narrowly missed buying one from somebody several years back, and luckily the city I was traveling to had a "new" one at a local Gamestop that I snagged.

Didn't see another one in the wild until a few weeks ago.

Really?.. I would swear that your one and only purpose in life is to be an antagonistic jerk. I'm surprised that anyone here is even willing to put up with you at this point.

Moving on, the high cost is likely due to the fact that it was only released on the Wii, rather than being ported to every system of that gen like so many other games have been. (This has likely already been said, but it's most likely one of the biggest factors.)
  • Just calling it like I see it. If you are just buying it as part of collecting the full Wii set I'd say that's perfectly reasonable. If you are buying it to play the emulated games then that is a waste of money. Why wouldn't you just play MAME directly? It's more accurate and also free. So yeah, people buying it just to play are either ignorant of MAME, or just prefer playing bad ports on bad consoles.
