Seattle Gamer - New AVS owner

Hi all! Nice to be here! I have been gaming my whole life.

I have a quick question about the forums. Is there a place where I can post about compatabilty issues with the Everdrive N8 running on the RetroUSB AVS console? I have run accross 1 game that does not play properly and that is Castlevania 3. I am not sure if it is the rom, the everdrive firmware, or the AVS. Anyone else having troubles? Which forum could I post this in or is there already a thread on this topic?

    Edit: Welcome to NA!

Castlevania 3 definitely works, so it's a problem not on the AVS side of things. I'll copy the post I made in the collector's corner to someone who had a similar issue. You'll want to make sure that you're working with fresh everything on the software side of things. Clear everything off the sd card and start totally all over.

    The post is as follows:

Reformat the sd-card and restore the OS and ROMs from an original source. DO NOT just copy the files from your sd-card to your computer and then back again.

Download a new copy of the latest OS from Krikzz's website and reload/reextract the roms from wherever you store them on your pc. Then, test functionality. You need to eliminate the possibility that the freezing is from structure or file corruption on your sd-card. This is the most likely scenario, despite how recently you may have loaded your ROMs, or reformatted.

The Everdrive N8 seems to be VERY temperamental with sd-cards and their files/structure.

This has helped to resolve freezes for myself and for several others, including a couple of AVS users complaining of the same thing you're describing in the Krikzz forums.

  • The last I checked, the mapper required by Castlevania 3 wasn't included in the default Everdrive set nor officially supported at this time. There may be some third party/custom Everdrive mappers that you can obtain to get Castlevania 3 to play (it requires mapper 5), but it won't work with the default setup. As mentioned before, this is an issue with the Everdrive and not the AVS. I've read that you can play the Japanese version of Castlevania 3 just fine on an Everdrive as it uses a different mapper, you'd probably want to get a translation patch for any of the scenes with text in them. Hope you get it worked out and welcome to NA!

Since I own the US Castlevania 3 cart, I haven't ever tried on my everdrive to play it - only Akumajo Densetsu. Just for kicks I loaded it up on the Everdrive, and Castlevania 3 (US Release) plays just fine. There is MMC5 partial support on the Everdrive. Castlevania 3 plays just fine. I don't have any custom mappers, just the normal set that comes with the OS download.

  • Krikzz added partial support for MMC5 about three years ago.

I just tried Castlevania III on an the AVS from an Everdrive N8 and it worked fine. ROM is from the latest No-Intro set (2016-09-06).
  • Thanks for the warm welcome! I'll try updating the Everdrive as suggested or grabbing the JP rom and be done with it. Castlevania 3 on my Everdrive fine works on my original regular front loader NES though, and that is why I am wondering if this specific problem is being seen elsewhere.

Are you running the 1.2.0 beta firmware?  I experienced the same problem with Castlevania 3 through the Everdrive on my AVS when I was running on 1.2.0.  Akumajō Densetsu worked fine though and rolling back to 1.10 got CV3 running properly again.
