Light Boy

I was in my parents basement and found this thing (pics are attached below). Not sure what it is and have never seen it before. It has an on-off switch... Which does nothing. The thing opens up, but not enough to put an orignal gameboy in it. The GBA fits, but only only after kind of jamming it in. Based on the name I'd assume it was to shine light on the gameboy, but the name Light Boy is trademarked and has no trace of Nintendo anywhere on it. So what is it? 3rd part accessory? Or Nintendo made gameboy light? Also what's it worth if anything. Any info helps!

  • Its a light and magnifier for the original gameboy.

  • I used to have one of those. It's a third party accessory to shine a light on the GB screen and had a 2x magnifying lens.
  • I badly wanted one of these as a kid and never got it

I had one but never used it. It was terrible. Ended up with a different lighted add-on that worked much better... can't recall the make/model.

I had the "Handy Boy" at some point (combines a version of the Light Boy with external speakers and overlayed buttons with a faux joystick).

Definitely left something to be desired, but having an external light couldn't be ignored.

    Oh snap! A riddle!

    A tree house!
  • OP, I remember that Light Boy being a piece of crap. The graphics on the Game Boy always messed with my eyes and that Light Boy never helped any. Meh!

    Oh, wait.

  • I had one of these. Those kept me up at nights.
  • Used to have something similar. Fond memories of playing with that thing on.
  • Thanks guys! That box art isn't the way I envisioned it being used but still cool! If only it turned in.
  • I had something similar also. No magnifier though... essential for a road trip to Chicago we took at the time. I played Final Fantasy Legend the whole trip. I bought Ironsword after arriving in Chicago but couldn't play it until I got home. I read the manual thoroughly instead.

Random memory... must have been XMAS '89. Good times. I enjoyed the hell out of FF Legends on that trip. It would have been impossible without one of these bad boys.

27 years ago? Damn, time is a bitch!
  • I had a third party one of these and didn't use it too much. The batteries died pretty quickly if I remember correctly and the magnifying lens was more annoying than anything.

They made one later on, I think around the GBC, that was a very small light that connected via the link cable port and was like one of those book worm lights. I think it was more practical, but I don't remember that helping too much either. The GBA SP was a godsend.
  • I loved this thing. The trick to inserting your original Gameboy is that you have to go in at an angle. Insert the front corner of the Gameboy first, so that the edge of the insertion point hooks into the little line running near the top of the system. Now you can swivel the back end of the Gameboy up into it, where two small pegs will click into the top two screw holes on the back.

yup. I had/have the Handyboy as well. It was just a large unessesary mess attached to the gameboy. The joystick and button clip on accessory was my least favorite part.

The Game Boy was held in your hands while using the Light Boy. That picture on the box makes it looks as if the device acted as a stand like modern day tablet / phone cases.

Additionally, the Light Boy might need to be angled correctly for the light to turn on. Whether it's wear and tear or by design, you might just have to fiddle with the angle for the light to come on once the batteries are inserted into the Light Boy and the device turned on.

It's a great device and one that I used many times; however, when the worm light came out for later GB models, it is easy to see why this thing went to the dumpster.
