NFR GameCube Smash Bros Not For Resale Bundle? Game Cube Melee System

I found this Not For Resale case for Smash Bros Melee (no innards).

My first thought was that it must have been part of this bundle

But a quick check on ebay shows bundles without games having the NFR print.

My guess is those sellers just Frankensteined a Smash bundle with a normal copy of the game. There are no obvious marks on the not for resale versions other than the where the stamp is on the case art. There's nothing on the disc nor manual from other listings I've seen.

I have seen NFR Melees with the not for resale stamp on the back side of the case.

From where did both of these Not For Resale versions come? Were they included in the the first bundle I pictured? I guess there were two different North American releases of the Smash Bundle.

  • It probably came from the Target Black Friday 2002 bundle. I sold mine in 2003 for the Walmart Black Friday 2003 bundle but I think I recall it having the NFR designation on the Target BF 2K3 bundle. I'm also sure that it was a standard 'cube turned into a bundle using a couple stickers (one to promote the game, one to cover the original UPC).
  • A local reseller had one of these and I was stumped, I think he said it was a developers copy or something. It's not a normal not for resale version as they say it on the back. This copy this worth closer to $80 vs the typical $50
