I stepped up my N64 game

Arise!

I recently dug my N64 out of the collection archives from its 15 year slumber to live amongst the rest of my classic consoles. I noticed it was an NS1 model able to be modified to output RGB so I said 'wth' and ordered an RGB amp from Retrofixes and an extra SNES cable from HD Retrovision. Well today was the day I installed it. Needless to say I'm pretty stoked. The most challenging part was soldering the wires to the tiny RGB pads on the N64 motherboard the rest was cake (soldering stuff to the amp board).

Behold!

You see anything about the pro action replay\gameshark codes to disable the texture filtering on most games? For the bulk of games out there it's an improvement.

hahaha that's exactly what my initial impression was testing out some games after installation. It's definitely better than composite, but I was expecting extremely sharp edges to magically appear. I love the brightness increase/decrease switch on these HD Retrovision cables to help subdue the dark overtones typical of N64 graphics.

Yes, I've read about the anti-aliasing stuff through various avenues such as RetroRGB and Krikzz' forums. Gamesharks/PARs have always been fascinating in being able to unlock stuff, but I like the patched ROMs idea better   as I had been planning to pickup an Everdrive 64 v3 around Black Friday. The girlfriend has been asking me to get the N64 back in commision and I won't turn down the chance to play some awesome 'familiar' multiplayer games.

  • I've downloaded openEMU for SaG the other day and started playing Majora's Mask n64. Mind you, this is my first time playing a n64 rom, but the clarity of it... just wow. It's awesome having super sharp polygons. You can't do much with texture resolution but the game looks clear as day. My ps4 controller maps well so it plays good too. I'm amazed and it started making me think about more games I should try on via rom.
