NintendoAge Gameboy Community Completely Wrong ?? !

Hi,

Just recently listed on Ebay a non complete Gameboy Sumo Fighter sold for $2500 (see below). Just 5 years ago I was being questioned for pricing my double for 500, and tried justifying the value at the 300 level (see below).  This probably holds true with many other GB games recently such as Metal Masters, F1 Pole Position, Hit the Ice, and many others.  Prices across the board are going much higher in my opinion.

Why do you think NA as a whole was completely wrong about value ?  I would love to see some of the original posters 5 years ago express their opinions now.  Are we just bad at figuring out prices in the market or are there other forces at work here that can be explained?

  • Well, you have to expect that prices would rise in the significant span of 5 years.
  • Yes I would expect prices to rise but not necessarily 800 % as far as Sumo Fighter...or others.
  • No offense but it sounds like you are being antagonistic with this post and trying to i told you so people. I don't see any other point to this?

First of all. That thread had 12 posts from a handful of members. How can you consider that NA as a whole?

Also it's been 5 years. Of course prices are going to go up. A few people in that thread even said gameboy will have its day just at THAT moment the game you were selling was not worth as much as you thought.

How were they wrong by saying what you were asking for in price was high for the time?

Another member even said you might wait years before finding another cib of certain games because of how rare. And another said when gameboy has more collectors going for full sets you will see a jump in price.
  • How could you expect anyone to know what prices will be in 5 years? All we can do is give our best estimate based on the current market.
  • It was listed with the best offer option enabled, it really sold for $1200, see here: http://item.ebay.co.uk/232097873786

Little Samson for NES rose about that high in the same span. You could find it for $90 five years ago. Now good luck finding it under $1000.

Game collecting exploded since 2011, especially Nintendo stuff. I don't see how that is news.

  • No offense taken... I had many people say GB would never be anything or worth very much compared to the other platforms. Also, I guess I now have some sellers remorse. Maybe I should have believed more in my own opinions of where prices and the GB market was heading and held on instead of selling things too quickly. However, I was trying to feed my own hobby and complete my collection by selling my doubles.

I'm sure there are a lot of regrets. Anyone who sold something like the NWC gold for cheap probably regrets selling them.

It's the nature of the hobby. Don't dwell on that and try to do better in the here and now. I'm sure you've benefitted from someone else's screwup somewhere.

It was not $90 5 years ago man...come on

  • Little Samson was $160 loose on average 5 years ago.

5 years may as well have been a century. You talk about criticism to your asking price, yet it sat unsold to the point that you had to mention it as being unbelievable.

Years change prices, years change markets.

Edit:  My use of Samson had nothing to do with previous posts about the game, didn't even see them until after I posted.  Just happened to pull it up from price charting.

I know several people who got it for that amount in 2010 or slightly later. It didn't stay that price for long, but that's what I remember.

Yeah, something like that. $90 and $160 are closer to each other than $1000 today.

  • Ah, 2011. $150 Keio Flying Squadrons and Little Samsons. $50 Sculptor's Cuts. $600 Magical Chases. It was a magic time.
  • For one, it sold for $1200, not $2500.  Don't spread misinformation, that is what causes hype bubble anyway.  And there were only two offers, $450 and $1200.  Seller got lucky... and the buyer of this item is a speculative (and banned) member who will just try to mark it up and resell it in a few weeks anyway.  Threads like this are exactly falling for the trap, panicing because of a speculative sell and then believing that the price took off when it is just one guy manipulating the market.  Pretty sad actually.

Also, I commented in your thread 5 years ago and I can quote myself 5 years later.

It's just that Gameboy is niche.  N64 and SNES CIBs are up ridiculously from last year (some have literally quadrupled) so it's not the economy.

Just from being active around here, I've noticed a ton of new members who make WTB threads for SNES / N64.  But can you think of any new guys who have come out of nowhere seeking GB rares?  I'm sure there may be some lurkers, but I can't think of any offhand.

I'm sure more people will trickle into Gameboy over time, but don't be surprised if prices are a bit stagnate until that happens.

I said prices would be stagnant and they were.  Now they've moved a bit and I did pretty well on GB myself.  I had two Avenging Spirits I bought at $75 each one year and sold both for over $700 the next.  Titles can spike out of nowhere sometimes while the entire library as a whole is pretty flat.  Metal Masters is another one that has probably gone up 10 fold from it's price a few years ago.  I think I paid $65 for sealed and sold at $500, proably would pull closer to $1000 today though.
  • I posted the info that I saw that was available to me. I wasn't trying to misinform anyone. Actual offer prices do not show up in Ebay at least for me they don't. Unless you have some special software. I don't frequent UK Ebay.

I am interested in getting to more of the reasons behind why the market has gone up so much not my own personal buying and selling. Not spreading BS or fighting.
  • Sorry to go off topic, but what in the what!! Little Samson has jumped the shark. I owned a cart and a really nice CIB copy just a few years ago. I'm sure it has to do with demand, but for as often as it sells, I can't believe the prices. There appear to be 10 carts available at the moment, including a couple of auctions. Madness, I tell you.
  • Well the tone of your post is like you are smarter than all of NA, so that is why you've gotten some flak.

In reality no one knows just how high or low a title may climb or fall, and we all guess to some extent. In general, if you see something rare and it is cheap today, and it is relevant to your collecting interest, it is always worth buying and holding. Rare items don't tend to stay cheap forever.

As far as this topic, let me say that the entire sale is completely bogus. As in the buyer never paid and it wasn't a real sale.  Thanks for posting this topic so I could investigate and do my homework though.

Hmm, I thought I only knew one person and he is still a member here.

  • Let me clarify I just used my own resale as an example of evidence, I wasn't trying to revenge off all of NA(which has been very good to me too). Let me put it a little different and get more specific...... Let's try to have a reasonable conversation.

    1. Do you think there are more collectors for GB?, 2. not more collectors, more collectors with fatter wallets ? 3. stupid newbies just blowing their money ? 4. more people faking sales just inflating prices but not actually selling ??? 5. less product available perhaps more sellers buying up inventory ? 6. All or any of the above ? 7. Some other reason 8. Maybe more public publicity with shows, newspaper articles...tv...Youtube..etc.

This is more of what I was looking for?
  • Back to the topic at hand, the Seller and buyer were the same person. That person is banned from NA, and was intentionally trying to manipulate the price on Sumo Fighter here. Please don't fall for that as a legit sale.

    To your questions.

    1) Yes, more collectors than a few years ago. But no where near as many as NES / SNES.

    2) Yes, more collectors with fatter wallets. Some good buyers in Europe too.

3&4) There is a newbie (the banned guy) who is trying to blow money and fake sales to manipulate prices higher.

Otherwise, I'd say supply is about the same, games come and go to the market as usual. Hasn't been much public hype on GB though so I don't think that is the root cause.
  • Are prices headed much higher from here ? More of the same ? or Lower ?  Anyone dare to predict   ?
  • I will chime in since I resold many of GB titles to feed my collection. Some titles like Sumo, Avenging Spirit and others will only go up. However, some titles will be going up and down drastically until the community will grow into something bigger and more rounded up. When people are going to talk about games and variants more frequently but until then we will keep seeing what we are seeing today.
  • I think that is a fair assessment.

That's a nice trick. Ebay.com used to show the best offer price that an item sold for but now it just has a strikethrough or does nothing to indicate it sold for anything other than the buy it now price.

So there you go. Visit the item number on Ebay.co.uk to see the real best offer price.

    Thank you.

I see it differently.    I think Sumo, Avenging Spirit, Fish Dude, Potato this, Spud that, Roach that, the titles that have nothing but rarity going for them, are fairly priced.     I like the better / more popular titles to spike next (sealed).

That is the same game that "sold" in the OP. This is by the same fucking Michael G asshole that is quickly turning into one of the most despicable pieces of human shit I've ever seen in this hobby.

The moron doesn't understand that for such things to actually make it happen he has to wait at least couple of months before relisting it as "another copy".

No problem, it's annoying that ebay nowdays won't even tell you that a best offer was accepted, it will just misleadingly lead everyone to believe that it sold for the full BIN price.

I actually used watchcount.com, just enter the item # and it will show you the true sale price.

How do you figure that out? Not doubting you in the least but it would be quite helpful to know if there was a way to prove it definitively.

I posted this in the seller silliness thread...

Not to derail entirely but this whole thread is stupid.  Theres more demand from collectors, and resellers.  Case closed.
