Anybody noticing an increase in people swapping/scamming on eBay?

I am, and it's starting to get ridiculous!

Anybody else experiencing a noticeable increase in this?

Yup. It's always going to be proportional to the growth of the hobby. If there are 5 scamming assholes in a group of 300, there are likely to be 50 scamming assholes in a group of 3000.

In theory, sure. In practice with a eBay case in the resolution center, it's tough to prove.

If it's REALLY valuable, I record myself packaging and shipping it. Recording myself marking it and looking for the mark when I unpack it isn't much extra hassle and would probably be enough for eBay. I've seen plenty of sellers claiming in the description that they "discretely mark" all of their stuff and I doubt they'd bother if it didn't prove useful.
  • Can't say I have, care to elaborate? Honestly no one has ever tried to pull a bait and switch on me. I'd think the chances of that are extremely slim to none.

Somebody just did it to my Mom on like a 70's hair curler thing. I've had games swapped on me maybe 20 times. Definitely a noticeable increase lately.

Like, I'll send games run through a RTI disc resurfacing machine and get back discs with dog bites in them lol.

I agree. I have bought hundreds of games on ebay since the early 2000's and never been scammed once (knock on wood)
  • I make sure to leave some bodily fluids on every game I sell, just in case.

That's one way to mark them

  • I quit using eBay. Video game wise i can get a better deal here. If im patient, everyone wins here. EBay i might buy discounted designer clothes, its not often. EBay sucks donkey dick, ive came to that conclusion and thats my opinion. I might cave and get a genesis controller is what im regretting a bit
  • Increased scamming by buyers became easier and more profitable, and therefore inevitable, when ebay (1) forced sellers to cover shipping both way on returns and (2) decided to side with buyers on nearly all not-as-described claims with no proof required whatsoever. All the discreet marking in the world won't help a seller - the buyer just has to claim that the item received wasn't the one in the video.

Ebay doesn't care during a resolution case.

UV ink is a scare tactic for scammers.

Though you can use this evidence in small claims court etc.

Nothing protects sellers on eBay. That's the entire reason I built a website years ago.

If the video shows you dropping it into the APU or passing it over the counter and shows the tracking with GPS-tagged photos then they have to literally ignore it.

My eyes are burning at the sight of such harsh language!

Do you have pics of your original item sent etc? What a jerk.
  • Yeah, that's quite ironic, though usually how these things turn out, sadly.
  • It's getting to were the only way to have undeniable proof to help with a case is to wear a GoPro and record every second of your ever-waking life. :S

Reached that point in 2011. I use a Looxcie wearable bluetooth camera.

  • eBay has made it so difficult to scam as a seller, all of the scammers have had to become buyers. If you only use eBay for purchases, it's actually a great thing. If you are big time seller, it sucks, but you be able to make enough money off your sales to cover the occasional scammer. If you are a small time seller, I would probably quit now before you get screwed big time.

Was it something you do as a preventative thing, or did you get hit with a scam? Sucks that it has to come to that just to prove a case either way.

In a way, I would say it's kinda fun... kinda like video blogging. lol

I once bought a Wii U wiimote "brand new in damaged box" on Amazon; I got a really, really dirty controller that was obviously used, and used by the dirtiest people on planet Earth.

So I email the guy and he says to return it and that to make sure I return the right one he put some UV markings on it... so I told him "and you haven't noticed how disgusting this new controller was?".

So I think a lot of scammers pretend to use this trick to make you feel like you're the scammer now...

    Idiots.

  • Aaaannd one month later OP is scamming people on eBay. Irony.
  • I've had a few minor instances of returned games having obviously different discs, but never anything that I haven't been able to get eBay to help me out with (which is saying a lot, I hate their lack of support for sellers more than I can express). Typically, if someone gives me that shady vibe with a return, I will mention that I'll check the UV mark when it gets returned to me to make sure that nothing got tampered with, and I've had plenty of returns get closed out at the mention of that alone. There will always be scammers, but I definitely have not seen an increase in the last several years, and I buy a ton of stuff on there.

Yeah. A few smaller things, but some as a buyer... like a seller sending me a defective part and then claiming I never sent it back or people claiming I did something I didn't do. Also it was a great dash cam when I rode the motorcycle exclusively and may have needed supporting evidence against another driver that doesn't require me to be conscious/alive.

He's scamming people out of thousands and thousands of dollars, sending empty mailers with no games but tracking to show as delivered.  Relisting items over and over with same photo after they sold, can't believe eBay hasn't banned his account yet.
