So I Decided To Try and Beat Castlevania for Halloween.

I've done pretty well in the past, but I just can't seem to get into the groove of it. I played almost all day yesterday and had two major setbacks. After I finally make my way up to the Mummy bosses, my game decides it doesn't want to work anymore and does this as I walk through the door:

After another hour or so of dying over and over again and getting past my previous point, I manage to make it to the hallway before Death. I'd spent more time than I should have trying to get down that hallway, so I decided to take a break and watch TV. I'm doing this all on original hardware, so I had to unplug the connector from the NES to watch TV. I don't normally do this, so it was pretty stuck in the console. I adjusted my hand to get a better grip, and just barely touched the reset button :/

I'm starting again after I post this, and before midnight I'll update you guys with hopefully the end screen. Dracula can't stop me, even if he does have the miraculous power to glitch video games. Also, any tips for the Medusa head hallway?

  • Good luck with that. I haven't beaten it either and I've had my copy down stairs all month but only played it once. Maybe I will tonight after we're done taking my daughter out.

Did you grab an invincibility potion right before going through the door? That causes a crash.
  • Medusa and knights hallway? Holy water stuns the knights and you can walk right through them. Holy water also stuns the reaper making that boss a joke, spam it right as he's spawning. You get the holy water at the beginning of the stage, if you lose it, kill yourself and start again.
  • Good luck! I did a Castlevania marathon last year around this time. It got pretty good at the first game and was able to beat it just fine. The Death boss battle is probably the biggest challenge for me in that game.

I moved on to Simon's Quest, which I had never finished and hadn't even touched in many years. I had a really great time with it and like the game, even though I can see why some find it disappointing compared to the original.

Dracula's Curse was by far the most challenging. It took me about a solid week of practice to finish it. But once I did...I don't know the last game that made me feel so satisfied finally putting the final nail in it's coffin.

I was unaware about being able to walk through them with holy water.

In general, the Holy Water may be the best weapon in the game as it outright demolishes virtually every boss.

You can also kill knights in one hit with the holy water.

Which, I'm guessing, is why you can walk through them?

not exactly, if you hit them with one water they'll sit in the flame for a couple seconds, you can walk through at that time, but by the time the flame dies, so do they
  • Yeah, holy water is best. Unfortunately, my copy is an early one that sometimes freezes up if you spam it.

The cross also works. Just keep tossing it with the triple shot and you'll force everything back. I actually find that more fun, like you're Captain America.   Death is a lot harder with the cross than holy water, though.
  • One of my favorite games to play. I've beaten it so many times. My favorite weapon is the triple boomerang. The only part that sucks is having to go back and forth before you get to Dracula collecting enough hearts to beat dracs ghost (or whatever it is) with enough holy water.
  • Good luck! Personally I've never had any trouble with most Castlevania games, first one not being an exception, although that could be because I grew up with Castlevania: Dracula X which is definitely one of the harder CV games. I did kinda cheese the death battle by using the holy water trick last time I beat it, but still, only place I got really stuck was the final battle with Drac, that took a good few hours
  • Holy Water is your friend.
  • Yeah I try to get holy water after the first boss and then keep it the rest of the game.

I watched speed run videos for tips and tricks, which made the process a lot easier. Not as authentic, but I ain't got all that time to waste learning the patterns!

love some of the short cuts they take in speed runs  like in level one getting hit by the bat to get over the wall with the meat in it to avoid the room with the fish guys, I always try to get that now

That's my big problem with games anymore. I can't sit for hours trying to beat one.

    Damn arthritis.

  • Good luck! Harsh you accidentally pressed reset, Castlevania is relentless...

    Fun game.
  • I was able to get past Death, but Dracula is a whole other nightmare. Luckily for me I was able to find a glitch the old fashioned way, doing it by accident then spending an hour trying every which way to replicate it. Then I gave up and searched the internet for it (Link for anyone interested: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/578318-castlevania/52861434)

Still haven't beaten him, but I've gotten as far as knocking his head off. Slowly but surely, I'm gonna beat this

Holy water is also your friend for this part, you can stun monster dracula with it

  • The timing for Dracula is tricky, and he can materialize right on top of you. The dreaded Jaquio frim Ninja Gaiden actually has an easier pattern, it's just tough to practice him because of how the game sends you back to 6-1. Imagine how frustrating Castlevania would be if you lost to Dracula and the game sent you back to the part with the bats.
  • A lot of people farm hearts right before drac but I actually don't like doing that. My first time trying to beat him I spent however long farming hearts just to get my ass kicked and have to do it again. when I decided fuck the hearts, I went straight to my next attempt right after dying and learned the pattern much quicker, because I was fresh from the last fight rather than having that break in between. so just go through the hearts once or twice to have enough to holy water the second form and use the whip for the first form. It worked out much nicer for me. Its important to keep moving because you don't know where he'll spawn, and once you learn how to jump over the fireballs and whip the head its smooth sailing. I actually beat the second form first try because I knew about the holy water, it was the first form that gave me the most trouble
  • I don't enjoy the first Castlevania as much as I did as a kid. I'm more annoyed now by the slowness and stiffness of the controls in addition to enemy knockback. It's still a quality game, but the Ninja Gaiden series is a huge improvement of the concepts, IMO.
  • Once you beat Dracula you'll be halfway there   the true Castlevania starts here
