  • It's very well known among shooter fans, made by treasure aka the people who did Radiant Silvergun. Still have yet to play either myself, really need to do that  I did play Gradius V (also treasure) and it's great!
  • Yeah, one of my favorite games of all time. I played it for x million hours on Cube, and then another x million on XBL. I even had some decent entries on the leaderboard back when it came out.

IMO it is the best game ever made to play for high score (paging pegboy).  Perfection.
  • It's a pretty fun game. I remember playing it in high school a lot with friends. I actually have it on Steam but I haven't put much time into it since I don't really play games on computer anymore. As for how well known it is, I always thought it was pretty notorious for being a hard game. That's what I always heard, anyway.
  • One of the best ever made, for sure. It might not be my favorite shooter, but it deserves the praise it gets.
  • It definitely is hard! I feel like this is going to be one of those games that i just sit down one weekend and don't stop playing haha
  • Fun game but I am more of a Radiant Silvergun fan. It is also a great game for the Dreamcast as well.
  • Just got it for Gamecube, its amazing.
  • Definitely a fan of it and have had it since around 2004 on the Gamecube. While I'm not a perfect chain combo master, I have 1 CC'd the game before and that was wonderful. If you ever get down to Galloping Ghosts Arcade in Chicago, they have a vertical screen arcade cab of both it and Radiant Silvergun. Amazing experience
  • I picked it up myself not to long ago. I wanted this game for a long time, and while it is a fantastic shooter. I did find it tohave been over hyped. While it was very good, it did not blow my mind.
  • It is one of the harder to find gamecube games as well.
  • I absolutely love Ikaruga. I think the difficulty is perfect because if you just want to plow through the game it's pretty easy for a shooter (at least it's certainly beatable with practice), but scoring well takes thought and precision. Getting into the zone and flipping back and forth during bosses is such a cool feeling.
  • You know what this game reminds me of? Vertical force for the VB. You flip between the forescreen and back fighting enemies on both and this game feels pretty familiar to that. That games pretty awesome too actually!
  • Ikaruga is very good. It's pretty uncommon too, I bought the only copy I ever came across that was complete.

It's well known among collectors and people with large Gamecube libraries, but a new collector or casual gamer has probably never heard of it. I know it's quite popular with shooter fans. Pegboy even raved about it, and he hates everything.
  • Never heard of it.
  • One of the most frustrating games I've played. But love it. Can't reach level 5.
  • It's really fun, but I find it insanely hard to chain combos for more than a few enemies. Going for score turns it into a whole different game... a much, much, harder game.
  • I can chain up until level 4 to my memory

I never could figure out how to continue it at that point though
  • I love shmups and have loved Ikaruga for a while. Never played it on GCN but have it for xbox 360 (and now on xbone).
  • I wasn't a fan of it BITD, but I've learned to really like and appreciate it.
  • I played Ikaruga a long time ago. It lived up to its reputation, and being I'm getting in the mood to go through some bullet hell, I may dust it off and give it a whirl.
  • I found the GC version CIB yesterday for $40 and passed it up. Regretted it immediately.

Don't feel too bad. It only goes for a little over that on ebay. Seems to be around $45.

Yeah, I seemed to recall it going for $70 at one point, but when I had a chance to check I couldn't quite tell since my phone is terrible at filtering on eBay. Prices were kind of all over the place on the rest of the guy's stuff too, which made it really hard to tell deals and less than deals apart. Glad I waited then, though I would like to play it at some point.

  • $40 is a good price. I think when Gamecube collecting gets hot, it'll be one of the first games to explode in value.
  • I bought a copy because of this stupid thread. I don't even like GC! But I do love shooters
  • Quick, make a rush on copies!

Unlike most games, Ikaruga deserves to be worth $200
  • Should have bought it :/.
  • I have been thinking of picking up this game for a while. I have been getting a bit into shooters over the last year and have had a lot of fun with a pc engine!

I love my gamecube and would love to grab a copy but I'm not sure how excited I am about spending $50 or so on a nice copy when it's like 10 on steam... Not sure if the gamecube version is going to be all that much more of a good experience for me...

if you just want to play the game, yes get it on steam
  • Ikaruga is a fantastic game. Nice gameplay, awesome visuals and sound. Easily one of the best from that era.

I remember when I picked it up the first day it released on Dreamcast. Good times. The US got lucky with this one with it eventually being released over here on the Game Cube (then later the 360, and more recently Steam). So many shooters from back then never made it out of Japan for consoles.

At one point I was able to 1cc it, but I can't seem to make it terribly far these days. It's the kind of game that's disorienting for quite a while until you get really familiar with it, and if you are out of practice you can go back to it and feel like you have never played it before. It's like you have to re-learn it all over again. I can't think of many other shooters that have that effect on me.
