Games that you expected to be crap shovelware

...but turned out to be enjoyable. Any examples?

Comments

  • The Italian Job for PS1. I remember back when it came out, it was basically one of the only budget $10 games that was not only worth a crap, but actually one of the better driving games on the system. It was done by Rockstar and is based off the original movie with Michael Caine
  • I've not played this one but I've been told that Buffy the Vampire Slayer for Xbox/PS3 is actually a really good game.

A friend of mine a few years ago mentioned that he had a buddy who while in college worked at a game store. He game over my friends house while some buddies game over and he said "Guys, don't laugh. What I'm about to bring out to play is actually a REALLY fun game." And, after revealing BtVS, everyone both laughed but apparently continued to have a really fun gaming session.

I've never been able to find this game to try and test it but I'm interesting if anyone else has played it. My friend, who I trust and didn't really like "dumb" games almost won me over.
  • I enjoyed King Kong on Xbox 360 back when everyone played crap games through just for achievements. I also thought Section 8: Prejudice was really fun considering it was a sequel to a mediocre multiplayer-only game no one cared about. Those are 2 that come to mind where I went in thinking they'd be absolute balls, not that either is really spectacular. Before the mid-2000s, I rarely went into a game expecting it to be total garbage.
  • Drama Queens for Nintendo DS. It's party game in the vein of Mario Party, and some friends and I played it on a lark for a podcast. Turns out the mechanics and mini-games were actually pretty good and we all really got into it. The best part is that someone who actually worked on the game listened to our podcast and reached out to tell us how much they appreciated all the good things we had to say about it. He said they all knew it was not typically a prestige game, but they tried to do a good job with it nonetheless.

Oh yeah King Kong! same game on OG Xbox right? I remember playing a demo of it and thinking it was pretty cool

  • Harry potter and the chamber of secrets on GBC. Turns out to be a great little rpg with collectible cards. etc. One of my favorites on the system and the OST is AMAZING

This reminds me... I was a big fan of Lord of the Rings:  Return of the King on GBA.  Played it for a good while.  Similar to Diablo, it was a fun little RPG.  I wonder if I still have that game.  I know I lost it at one point...

  • Smartball for SNES. It has some really bland/uninspired graphics. I figured it was a poor attempt to jump on the Mario/Sonic bandwagon. But I had a blast playing that game. It's still one my favorites. I really want to re-buy that game.

    I'm sure you meant PS2?

Anyway, it's readily available and not hard to find for a cheap buck. Quick search on eBay yields several dozen copies.

  • Samurai Jack on gba. Picked it up in a gba lot ; figured it was just another mediocre cartoon based game. It's actually a fairly solid lite metroidvania type video game.
  • Oh man, Mister Mosquito for the PS2 is a great game that I thought for sure was gonna be crap!
  • Greatest Heavyweights on Sega Genesis. Looks like a boring boxing game but the action is great and it may have been the first fighting game to allow created characters. You fight your way up the ladder to battle Ali and all time greats, very fun game.
  • Just thought of one, Beatle adventure racing. You'd think it's clearly a poor attempt to advertise the cars but it has some really solid track design and the Cars control well, even though you only have Volkswagen Beatles to choose from

My best friend had this when I was a kid and it was one of the games we played the most. So much fun for a game with one car.

The one with Michael Caine, I'm pretty sure, was not a remake.

Australian release was "HSV Adventure Racing," so I guess you can try some vehicles that aren't VW Beetles

  • Shovel Knight....

I'm getting things mixed up. Thought he was in the 2003 movie.

Derp. Now I remember Edward Norton was in the remake.

Not that I got them confused with each other, just that I consider them each equally familiar.
  • Pirates the Black Buccaneer for the PS2 and Xbox. I actually love this game.
