Abadox on NES
I'm relatively new here, so forgive me if this seems like self promotion. But I would like to start a discussion about Abadox on the NES (if anyone is interested that is). I think it's a pretty cool NES SHMUP with an somewhat unique aesthetic. It also holds the distinction of being the only game I can think of with vertical scrolling levels that scroll down rather than up (if you can think of another one, I'm all ears).
I never played the game much as a kid but I picked it up recently to play on my newly modded for RGB model 2 NES. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to capture a run through of the game, and I did it with one life. Also used a Framemeister upscaler to cap the footage so if you are a fan of scan lines and CRT's you may take offense . But anyway, I'm curious what others think of this game and would love to hear your feedback!

BTW digging the video. Id like to see more play thrus like this with commentary, instead of just playing.

Uh... Battletoads? XD
And yes, the downward scrolling stages are unique. And infuriating.
Uh... Battletoads? XD
They're not constantly scrolling, though. They at least have some starts and stops. And not everything kills you.
This game is awesome and so fucking hard. Id like to hear how pegboy can give an excuse that you some how didnt beat the game.

Thanks! It was the first NES game I've done for my channel but I plan on doing more. Particularly, The Guardian Legend. And yeah, I think commentary helps keep it interesting.
Abadox! I've heard good things about this game, I oughta pick it up sometime.

Yeah that is true, but I guess I should have clarified that I meant SHMUPS

I actually made me pop in Abadox again!
And then turn it off within 15 mins because I got so frustrated haha. I think the big issue for me is the lack of rapid firing and the randomness of the hit detection as you've mentioned in the video. Id say the hardest part of the game is the first level since you have to play perfect while very underpowered. Also memorizing where the arms come out in the second half of level 2 is important too. Thats the furthest ive gone without dying. Always those damn arms.
Def would like to see more videos like this.
Abadox is one of my favorite shooters released on the NES in North America, if not at the top. Many NES shmups haven't aged the best and are either graphically unpleasing, or aren't challenging enough in the modern day. Abadox strikes a nice balance between both with solid production values and gameplay that can be a breeze if you're having a good run, or insanely brutal if you're not paying attention (it's very difficult to recover after a death, but possible).
This game is awesome and so fucking hard.
Suffers from "Gradius Syndrome" within the first level, from what I recall.
I'd be genuinely interested if it is winnable if you actually die and lose powerups anywhere in the game.

Yes... if you can keep your inner rage monster at bay. It's a childhood favorite of mine, and I made it my mission to beat this bastard without the invincibility code. Dying on the last level and trying to beat it is akin to Metal Storm's second quest, but it is doable.

I've done it as well, but not since I was a kid. Strangely enough it was one of the earliest NES games we had as a family but I was the only one that played it. So naturally I spent a lot of time with it!
I remember that commercial. Between it and some coverage in Nintendo Power, this was one of those games that fascinated me in my youth. It was so grotesque but so delightfully eccentric. I never did own it until just a few years ago, although I managed to rent it once back in it's day and thought it was pretty neat (but very difficult, especially for young-me).

Why would I? He beat it legit on 1 credit, what's your point? People in the shmups community actually know how to play video games properly.
This is on its way to my house right meow. Stoked for it.
Be sure to schedule some anger management courses.

Haha, damn.... I'm just going to end up using a game genie anyways, haha

Bah, real men go in and get their ass kicked normal.

Haha, oh I will.... I'll just grab my game genie after realizing how hard it is.
My style is giving myself enough time to really get a feel for the game.... Usually a few tries/day over a weekend.... After that I know whether it's worth attempting to beat "normally" or whether I'll end up using a GG...
according to to the comments, I already figured I'd end up with the GG at some point...
But NEVER do I start a game with a GG, ever:... Gotta at least play it a few times and get your ass kicked!!
You need to know how "Nintendo hard" it is first before giving up and using a GG.
im humble enough to let knew games kick my ass. That's what is fun about new games.... Learning everything.
It has level select, but you can do that with codes built into the game.
There's an invincibility code, but you don't need Game Genie for that.
edit: actually, there is a code that lets you keep the spread shot permanently. That one might actually be useful.

Sure they do!
Really like your format and production. Got a sub from me. What tools and resources do you use for your video editing and compositing?

Thanks Webhead! I appreciate that! As far as the tools I use: Power Director 15 for editing, Adobe and After Effects CC for the sprite animation. A lot of the effects I either create myself, or customize in my editor (which has a bunch of built in ones that can be heavily modified, such as the blood I used in the intro). I am about to start learning Blender so I can do even more with animation. But if you enjoyed the Abadox vid (which was me basically screwing around lol) you ought to check out some of my earlier vids. The one I did on Thunder Force IV for the Genesis/Megadrive is much better production-vise IMO.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback! And thank you EVERYONE for the feedback, it is much appreciated! And I'm glad we are discussing this game, that IS what I wanted after all . I'll respond to a few more of the posts here later tonight as a lot of you had interesting things to say about the game that I'd like to touch on...

You bought it after watching my video? If so then I'm impressed! lol

A good place to share future videos(videos of the future?) is the promotions subforum here. There's tons of great blogs, vlogs, logs, etc there to check out.

EDIT: WTH is going on with this format? My words is wonky!
EDIT 2: I'm not a mod, so I removed some words that made me look like one.
