NintendoAge 2016 Weekly Contest Tournament Presents Round 3: Adventure Island

Hello everyone and welcome to the final round of the 2016 Weekly Contest Tournament and our very final contest of the year!  Everyone has come a long way to reach this point, and in the end, the top 3 scores in each tier will emerge as victors and win a prize.  The final challenge for our participants this year is going to be Adventure Island.  Participants, please read the rules carefully for your tier to make sure you play by the correct rules.  Failure to play by the correct rules can result in your score being invalid.  Participants, please make sure to include your tier number when you post your score.  It will make it easier to calculate the final results at the conclusion of the contest.  First off, here are the participants:

The contest ends Sunday, 11/13/16 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be written or typed on a piece of paper and be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, slow motion functions, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

  • It's a real shame Seppatoni didn't make it. This is his game.
  • Oh well... not too keen on the highest score bit. Would have preferred further progress, but so be it.

Maybe I can try to figure out how to stop sucking at this game and actually beat it in one life instead.

Thanks.   Too bad to be so close and didn't make into the final round.

But honestly I never expected to be even part of the tournament, so I'm still happy with my performance.

    Good luck to every one.

  • Time to get into study mode to figure out the eggplants position and the hidden bonus areas.

Hopefully I will stop being so bad at it tonight and somehow make past world 6-4 in one life.
  • Pfft 1 life?!?!?!? Oh man, reserved post for future dismal score ...

That's all she wrote.  I'm done with this game for awhile.  I can honestly say I unhestitatingly and unequivocally loathe frogs.

Will it be good enough to place higher than 4th?  Who knows ...

    Tier 3 - 258,750

  • Congratulations to everybody that made the finals! Good luck!!

I noticed that the 1 life rule was for all tiers, so I bet there will be some really competitive scores across the board. I'd play along this week too if I had the time to give it a solid effort, but I don't know Adventure Island well enough to put up a score that would be worth posting in a handful of attempts.

This is where I'm at as well.  I still might give it one shot just to see what abysmal score I can feel bad about.

If I have time to get an attempt or two in, I might post it, but this is going to be a really busy week so I'm not sure if I'll get much of a chance to play at all.

  • I'll be giving it a go for fun, bragging rights, maintaining my 2nd place for AI2 score. Something
  • lmao I'm toast this time around. Gave it a few swings this morning, couldn't break 4 digits. Gonna read up a little on this one and try to learn its quirks, like the wonky jumping, why most stuff kills you in one hit while others don't, etc.
  • I remember skinny saying that SMB2J would be in the tournament. We might as well be playing that. This is like that level of difficulty and with weird controls, shooting enemies instead of jumping on them, and fruit that you have to keep eating or you die.

I'm still working on the first world.

If this was a regular weekly contest, I'd probably post a lazy participation score like I did with AI2 and call it a day. But now the stakes are higher.
  • BTW, I'll probably never post another fake score as I did with Palamedes. All of my scores from now on are legit attempts. A well executed snipe near the end of a contest is fun, but I would rather that people trust what I post and not be like skinny where you can't believe anything they say.

I always posted my scores right as I got them. I know there's some strategy in posting a decoy score, but for anybody that knows me, I was always they type to say "Here's what I've got, let's see if you can beat it". I'd rather put legitimate pressure on the competition early on with them knowing what I've got instead of keeping them guessing.
  • I also always post my scores as I get them, and too often actually telling how I got it so other people can have a fairer chance at beating it.

Tonight I will do my first run and I will try to record a video of the gameplay to post along it.

I'd like tier 1 to be playing in a vacuum, but I suppose there won't be anything in your vid that anyone couldn't figure out

  • Yeah... you might want to save posting your video until after the contest.

On the other hand, there's plenty of AI on Youtube already for anyone who wants to look it up.

    Very well.

I will hold the video for the end of the contest then.

I wanted to allow people to see and try to emulate it to get higher scores or even beat mine by a mile, but I will keep it to myself then.

  • ^ If you do a bit.ly link, will it expand it here...?

    http://bit.ly/2eg0275

OK, that test confirms it. If you're dying to link it, maybe use bit.ly to shorten, then include it, in case folks want to watch? It won't embed, so it'll be less tempting...

Huh ! I actually agree with you
  • I will hold on it till the contest is finalized instead, in order to respect Brock's wish of tier 1 playing in a vacuum.
  • Last minute score snipes have almost done me in twice in a row. It's perfectly legit, and my own fault if I choose to sit comfortably on a score while other gamers are grinding at it, though. Several times this year, I've either lost track of time, or had some other catastrophe at home to deal with prevent me from posting on Sundays, so I've tried to be more proactive and get my score in earlier in the week. Eh, it's just the ebb and flow of a friendly competition. The only guarantee is to just do your best and post it.

In all fairness, the last score post (that I'm aware of anyways) from Tier 3 came in from Red at 8:22 so there were still 2.5 hours left.  I hear you though, it's a gambit.  Do you post the scores early and have others use that as a benchmark or wait until the last moment and lower the boom?  Either way, I wish you good fortune!

  • The springboards work differently in this game from how they are in AI2. That threw me off at first. The jumping controls are weird at first as well. If you don't hold down B when you jump straight up, you just do a little hop. What's up with that?

Well, I meant "last minute" fairly loosely. As in, the last part of the week long event. Rereading my post it looks like I'm implying it like a very last second poach on an Ebay bid, lol. 8:22pm still left a very generous amount of time to post, I'm just tucked in for the evening at that point.

Honestly, I got lazy the past two weeks. Been dealing with a bunch of stuff at home, so I got what I thought were solid scores, put 'em up, and walked away. I'm very confident I could have scored higher, but I figured it was good enough to stay in the runnings, and I've comes THIS(makes tiny gesture with thumb and index finger) close to getting bumped out. I'm going to have to work my ass off this week. I'm a completely green noob to AI, and this is the finals. I think I'll come up with an OK score, but the odds aren't in my favor.

No matter what happens, I want to say that I've had a blast participating in the weekly contests this year, and look greatly forward to next year's games. I have seen some absolutely insane scores from you guys, and I feel like a better gamer just for having participated. Thanks for having me!
