RPG's with a Victorian/Gothic setting

I love old school medival Final Fantasy & Dragon Warriortype games and Fable (yes, Fable) is one of my favorite series outside the other two. The Victorian/Gothic era also appeals to me but I don't like alot of over the top weird and complicated battle systems just a simple pick it up and play. Any & all suggestions are appreciated.

  • Looooove the first Fable. I need to play that again.

    How about Elder Scrolls?
  • I always enjoyed Koudelka for PS1 when I was younger.
  • Too bad Bloodborne isn't an RPG, but only has light RPG elements. It has the very setting you're after.
  • Legacy of Kain series were my faves.
  • the first 2 golden sun games
  • Ultima Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams

it's on GOG for free here https://www.gog.com/game/ultima_worlds_of_adventure_2_martian_dreams

I need to second the hell out of this......Although not very gothic, it is a little more bright and cheery for the most part but the Golden Sun games are fantastic.

the first 2 are great, but the 3rd one was a bummer

I should try to find my copy and play it again.  It really is a great game but I don't think I've played it in 10 or so years.  I also played the first Shadow Hearts game but never got further in the series.
  • London Seirei Tanteidan?

    Boktai?
  • Boktai isnt an rpg but you might like it.
  • So what is Koudelka all about?
  • This may reaching a bit but how about the "Gothic" series on PC?I personally have not played them but they seem gothic enough and I mean it's in the title name.
  • What about spike mcfang?
  • The first thing that popped into my mind was Koudelka (PS1), which I'm glad to see already mentioned.

Rule of Rose (PS2) seems to pop into mind as well, though I think it was set in the 1930's so it's a bit later than the Victorian era.

I haven't played any significant portion of either game so I can't testify as to whether they are good or not.

    Ben
  • Shadow Hearts wasn't in this category?

    And what about Baroque?
  • Koudelka is your best bet on console. Technically not a great game, sort of a sluggish and unscary survival horror game with a turn based battle system. But the story, characters, and monster designs are amazing.

On PC you want Arcanum. More steam punk than pure Victorian but it captures the setting really well... while tossing in some magic and elves anyway.
  • Koudelka and Shadow Hearts
  • Bloodborne has fantastic atmosphere. Very much seems based on a Victorian setting (but not quite) and ozzes gothic charm.

Koudelka/Shadow Hearts series sounds like would be up your ally as well
