What would you do with an infested Wii U

Took in a Wii U.

Unit looked fairly clean. Had the original Mario Kart bundle box with Mario Kart already installed. Worked. Customer said he only used it a couple of times.

Tested the pad with Mario Kart and tested the disc drive with one of our games.

There was a stange smell though. Nothing a good cleaning shouldn't fix, right?

So we bought it and started to wrap all the cords etc. The console tapped againt the counter and some flecks poped out. Hmm tap again and bug parts. Then dead small bugs. Then dead big bugs which had to be helped out. Then live little bugs and finally live big suckers.

Took the cover off of the deck apart. Now the stink hits you and there must have been 50-100 live and half dead bugs in this thing some as big as an inch long.

I think I got most of them but that is as far as I took it. If I disasemble it any further I may not be able to get it back together.

So there it sits. I didn't even put it back together. Bagged the deck and then bagged the entire box.

The gamepad is fine. really nowhere for them to get in. So I suppose I can sell that seperate and sell the deck as defective or parts even though it works?

What would you do with it?

  • Ebay as parts/not fully working with a disclaimer that it's bug infested. I get snes systems all the time that we're roached at some point in their life.

I prefer not to deal with it and sell it to other people who are willing to.

Sell as a set or seperate?

Working used gamepads look like they get $100 or so.

We are into this for $80

Personally I'd part it- as I think you'll get the most doing that.
  • Getting rid of insect infestations is always problematic. Any chemical toxic enough to kill the little beasties is going to linger on (and in) the unit. Heat will do them in but is not likely to be terribly good for the unit at the levels needed. Freezing can work but you have to repeat it several times to make sure you get all the eggs (you basically have to wait until they hatch). And no matter what you do you still have to deal with removing the corpses. Probably not worth anyone's effort in my opinon. If it was me (which of course it isn't) I would resell the gamepad, cords, etc and write the unit off.

(Also knowingly transmitting said critters through the mail might well violate some post office rules.)
  • You could always keep the gamepad on hand in the event a gamepad-less working Wii U comes into your shop.
  • You could always try to trade it off to a GameStop lol.
  • Pics or it didnt happen!!

OP could probably mail you a few corpses.

  • Part it out and pitch the main unit.

^ This.  Or part it out as best you can. Gamepad, cords etc.  Man I hate bugs.

These are the results after a semi-decent scrubbing. Sorry I don't have any before pictures. Trust me it was bad.

  • ^ Ah, good ol' roach dookie. I've been dealing with that kind of stuff for 15+ years at the gamestore I help run. lol

Use some good ol' alcohol and you'll be able to get the bug poop off. I suggest working on this in a garage or something that's open to the outside air.
  • Absolutely disgusting. I would have thrown that out when the live critters were crawling out.
  • In my experience, it's all fixable, but it's gonna be a project.
  • imo, just throw it into a trash bag by itself and toss it in the dumpster. sell the pad and the cables and the controllers if their not infested
  • I'd be worrying more about the live ones that crawled out rather than what to do with the system

Perhaps that would be my attitude if I didn't buy and sell things for a living.

I never throw anything out. If someone out there can use it then it is a waste to throw it out.

This is a working system after all.

Here is a set of cat pissed on games that I auctioned off here on NA. Believe it or not the buyer was happy with the items and the price.

  • throw it in the garbage , sell the controller, the cords. pretty obvious answer really
  • Didn't someone get a package that had german roaches in it and they bit his dog?
  • I would either toss it or sell it online with a disclaimer about the bugs. Theres always people that rip consoles apart for parts or to tinker with.

Thats pretty disgusting though, some people are animals
  • Wasn't there a thread awhile ago where someone had an infested Nintendo 64? It's crazy how common this problem seems to be.
  • Hell dude if your going to chuck it send it my way, I've cleaned up a hell of a lot worse (I do keep them however so don't you guys start flipping out) and would be a winter project don't need the pad and I'm super cereal. (also drunk...)
  • I've got a sega saturn that looks like this on the inside. I've been meaning to slap it back on ebay. I know that's wrong, but I'm intending to sell it cheap

Don't blame me. Blame all the nasties with their roach shit filled consoles.

  • I've seen much worse and they usually seem to air out eventually after a good cleaning. There's no hiding the internal evidence: that stuff seems to pit and scar all the internals for good. It's usually comestic at that point.
  • Well I ended up selling the deck to a local buyer. He was excited to get a working deck for less than the price of a defective one.

He said he will clean it out. good luck buddy. Better you than me.
  • Wow, that is absolutely horrific... I'm with everyone else, ditch it.
