Does playing the legend of zelda skyward sword feel like a chore to anyone else?

So I've been trying to get into skyward sword, I've apparently played 17 hours and I just find it so tedious. I'm not a fan of the controls they bother me which is odd because I really don't mind motion controls in the least, I think it's because they keep screwing up for me, but maybe it's just me. Is this game a little more fetchy then usual or is it just me? The exploring hasn't been nearly as rewarding as usual in my opinion.

I want to enjoy this game so much, but it's just not happening for me and I can't put my finger on why.

Does the story pick up? Is there some amazing bosses or dungeons coming up?

Oh and I want Fi to fucking die. Like good god how in the fuck did she/him/it get in this game. Like the game should be called The Legend of Zelda: The Explanation of Fi...

  • I thought the overworld was bland and couldn't make it out of the first dungeon without wishing for Twilight Princess controls.
  • I didn't find the game tedious for the most part...in fact I breezed through it whereas usually with a new Zelda game I have to really commit myself to it. There are some annoying elements: Fi, crystal sidequest, worlds repeating but overall I liked the atmosphere. Plus the music is very "Wii" if that makes any sense, and I mean it in a good way

How far into the game are you?
  • Sounds like you should stop playing.

Life is too short to play games you dont enjoy.
  • I felt the same way. Didn't hate this game by any means but it was definitely the Zelda I enjoyed the least. Having to fight the large black thing where you have to destroy the toes repeatedly throughout the game got old REAL fast.
  • I beat it last month for the first time because it was the only Zelda console game I hadn't beaten. It's a slog. Fetch quests that felt like random trials rather than necessary tasks to save the world, backtracking, repeated areas/bosses, and it's the longest Zelda game. 40 hours for me to beat the main quest and some side stuff. The controls also made me want to die. If they cut through the BS and made a "tighter" game I think it would've been better, but it's really the only Zelda I didn't enjoy.
  • It's the controls for me. I just can't.

I like the aesthetic of the game but the motion control caused me to quit real fast. I think I got 2hrs in.
  • I really enjoyed Skyward Swords and imo it's one of the few examples for a great usage of the Wii motion control. Of course there are some week parts in the game, like those repetitive battles against the the imprisoned or the silent realm, but I had more fun with it han with many oder parts of the series.

Agreed, I didn't like the silent realm bits either. I had a lot of fun fighting The Imprisoned each time, though.

  • A lot of new games are chores to play.
  • For me it was the exact same reason I wasn't a fan of Twilight Princess on the Wii, they used the motion controls. And I'm not saying the Wiimote is the worst thing ever, hell playing Warioware was an absolute blast with that controller. But for a game that I'm going to log somewhere into 30+ hours those controls just get stiff and sometimes feel like a chore to use.

Considering my backlog is long enough for me to play games the rest of my life I agree lol. It's just my Completionest side that's like "you're a third through the game you can't stop now!"

    Lol gamer problems

  • Yeah if you aren't enjoying it then stop and move onto something that you do enjoy. I thought it was a great game and after the 2 hour "tutorial" / training mode, it picked up nicely. It sounds like you are way past that so if it hasn't picked up for you yet, then it probably won't.
  • The dungeons are really great, although oh-so formulaic at this point. Everything else sadly feels like a chore.

The return to that same miniboss over and over again is just horrendous. The quest for the Hylian shield as well is just completely stupid.
  • I found Skyward Sword to be a chore for the most part too. I really did not enjoy it much, and it really took some self motivation to actually finish the damn game. I couldn't wait for it to be over. There were some fun parts too. In concept it could've been fun game. The controls didn't always respond well, the overworld was bland and most of the dungeons felt lazy. I also didn't care for the story, the characters, and the fact that you really only visited 3 areas in the entire game outside your main town. Oh, and the sky is empty. What's up with that? There were like 2 or 3 floating islands in the sky, so flying felt like nothing but a giant time waster. But I did like the graphics, the music, and the ability to dash, so it wasn't all bad. But it's easily one of my least games in the entire series.

Yep I hate flying to nowhwere too, it felt really pointless, slow,  and annoying to keep shaking the wii mote to flap. I may take a sizeable break from this one and come back to it and finish it later. Good thing there are so many other enjoyable entrys to the series lol. Still pumped as hell for the next one

  • Because it's a bad game. Don't be fooled just because it says Zelda on the package, those games haven't been good for over 20 years.
  • I love Zelda but I still haven't played this one. It sounds like the controls are gimmicky and the game very bland/linear from what I've read over the years. Plus, I was never really excited for this one when it came out. I'll get to it someday but it's not a priority, especially after reading this thread.

Though it can't be worse that those two terrible Zelda entries on the DS! ( hope)
  • If you don't like the controls, you could always try playing Skyward Sword on the Dolphin emulator. IIRC it's possible to map the sword controls to the 360 analog stick.

The problem is that the game is designed around motion controls as much as it is that the Wii M+ sucks. Turning every enemy and boss into a minigame where your attacks are automatically blocked from all but one direction was slow and frustrating to me.

That depends. I actually enjoyed the DS games even though I think making both of them entirely controlled by touch screen was a really dumb decision. If those two games had traditional controls they'd be a lot better. Even with touch screen controls they do control well enough, certainly better than Skyward Sword's motion controls. And the locations are more varied and the games are generally more fun than Skyward 's, in my opinion. While changing the controls in the DS games would solve a lot of issues (for me at least) that fix is not so simple with Skyward. SS has way too many problems to list. There are some things I liked about the game but the bad heavily outweighed the good for me. I easily put it in my bottom 3 Zelda's out of all of them. The DS games are still on the bottom half of the ranking but I'd sooner replay those than Skyward.
  • I felt the same way. The way things played out felt very tedious and surprisingly linear for a Zelda game. Wii Motion plus, while better than a lot of motion control games, still only seemed to work right 80% of the time which lead to some frustrating moments. People like the story, and it looks great for being Wii game, but just didn't do it for me.
  • I liked Phantom Hourglass on the DS, but I didn't really care for spirit tracks that much. I think it was mainly because of the more open world of PH.
  • Yes, it was a bore and a chore... Fi basically tells you how to solve puzzles right as you see them, it's repetitive, the overworld feels constrained... it's just not a good Zelda game and a maybe slightly above average game over all.
