In my experience, it's usually the employees who are awful.

Thursday night, a long-time Walmart employee (older woman that looks very familiar) kept trying to tell us: "We have 6, but they don't go on sale today. They go on sale Saturday November 12th." At that point, there was only one other person (presumably arrived just before me). Maybe she was hoping to send us away and had already deterred some people earlier.

That's not particularly awful, just a recent example. There were other examples from the same night that I won't bother to type up.
  • Target is releasing some this morning
  • Demand pressure seems to be dropping dramatically. Hopefully, as some others have said, this thing will be back to normal pricing and easy to find in another couple of weeks.
  • First to market = highest prices, then price will level out as more sellers try to undercut other BINs. I'd expect price to settle in the $150-$200 range up through the Christmas season. Sure we'll see some restocks but the scalpers will once again try to buy as many of those as possible to keep making profits. No way supply will catch up to demand until after the holiday season.

My only reason why I think differently is because surely, SURELY, the 6-12 year old crowd of kids aren't begging their parents for this device.  It's the parents that can't say no to their children (especially the divorced fathers) that make items super-rare and scalped at Christmas.

I mean, seriously, what young kid would want this under the Christmas tree?  Some may have an appreciation for nostalgia gaming because that's how they bond with a parent, but most kids will see this as junk and parents having to get their kids what they want is what causes real Christmas demand.  Certainly most adults who want this (but obviously not all of them) can exercise a bit of restrain in self-desire.

That doesn't really strike me as a story about an employee being awful, at all.

You have no idea what training they may have received from corporate about this product (probably NONE).

You have no idea what information they were told by their management.

But they are basically minimum wage employees with no reason, at all, to inform themselves about the products they carry beyond what corporate training mandates.

I'd give her the benefit of the doubt that she was misinformed.

That isn't an "awful employee", rather it's an unfortunate circumstance that one should probably expect from a place like Walmart.

  • The NES Mini retails for 91$ here in Switzerland! That's 50% more expensive than in the US - crazy. I'll wait until they are on sale...

Scalpers have far more time to line up outside target 2 hours before they open than dads trying to buy stuff for their kids.
  • 5,000 plus listings. Did stores even get that many in stock across the whole country? Yeesh.

She's a long timer. I think I've been seeing her there for over 15 years. I am tell by her personality that she's a devious self-centered person and she's never really had any interest or skill with customer service.

She knew. The shipper box (which I acquired) clearly says "do not sell until 11/11."

  • totally forgot this was even out whoops. I hope one of my family members was on their A game and got me one for Christmas. Looks like the scalpers are having a field day with this one.

    Walmart.com?

Until the 18th meaning, today (11/15), tomorrow (11/16), Thursday (11/17), and maybe inclusive of Friday (11/18)? Going live on the website at 2pm PST/5pm EST?

I got one on release day with no intention of selling, but once they were selling for 4 times the purchase price, it was a no brainer. I went 30 years without ever really experiencing the NES, I can wait a few more weeks. Treated my fiancee to lunch at a Thai restaurant near us then we went and saw a play at my old high school and saved the rest of the money

As much as the scalper mindset annoys me, if I were in your shoes, I'd likely put mine on eBay with a BIN of $300.  If someone's crazy to pay that then, yes, I wouldn't have minded giving it to them and pocketing the profit.  I would have gotten me another one and been happy witht he profit.

The comments on that "article" tells us all we need to know.

  • I love how people just post links to anything without even bothering to do just a small amount of research. This is becoming more and more of a problem. We have virtually any information at our very fingertips but instead are lazy are make ourselves look like fools. Good grief.
  • Thought I'd share these here since you guys might appreciate it.

  • Darn, I got the NES Classic Edition in my cart at walmart.com at 5:00pm and I had my address and credit card info saved to my account, but it made me input them anyway, so of course it sold out before I could finish. Shucks
  • My Best Buy order got delayed until the 9th of December! So much for ordering right when it showed up as in stock.
  • I cant believe that this thread has gotten so far away from what I posted. Good luck everyone who wants one finding one
  • I have to wonder if these would be popular if the supply wasn't so limited. I'm sort of surprised it's such a big thing at all considering there have been a ton of ways to buy/play these games for the past 30 years.

At the moment, I don't have any interest in buying one for myself. I own most of these games on the actual system. My other problem is my flatscreen has a slight delay (I use an older TV for my NES). I think it only comes out to 12ms while in game mode, which could be worse, but it's the difference between falling in a pit or jumping off the ledge while running in Mario. I can't stand the delay on these newer televisions.
  • Just got another update from Best Buy that my order has shipped.
  • There's about a dozen on eBay around $200.

People are stupid and impatient. For video games that have been out for almost 30 years.
