If all stores were well-stocked with this item, I highly doubt anyone would be frothing at the mouth for it. And I wager half the people buying them for themselves are only doing so based on the perceived urgency of acquiring it. Nintendo has managed to drum up a shit-ton of demand for it by sending out limited quantities.

Actually for this its dumb. It already had tons and tons of interest. This isnt a collectable market item like an amiibo. This is to sell to casuals big time as well as nintendo fans. It is idiotic to short demand this much. It just made people buy them from someone else on second hand market or give up on it entirely.
This shortage did nothing to hype this product. It already had immense hype. I had people talking about this on my facebook newsfeed when announced and when it came out that do not collect games and I would never think would even want it. This was a fuck up by nintendo. They needed to be cranking these out. They would have still sold out by black friday then could do another big restock in december that would sell out. They are just missing out on sales right now.
It was already mega hyped. The shortage wasnt going to hype it up more.
Everyone and their sister posted they wanted it on facebook when it was just announced.
My cousin who has no interest in video games, who hasnt played one in 2 decades wanted one when it was announced. I understand what nintendo tries to do, but with this specific product it is freaking stupid to short supply. This product has a window of hype to casual people especially in the holidays and you are blowing it. Itll still be bought when they flood the market early next year with them, but it could be so much more right now. Casuals will be over it by then.
Gotta agree. I don't think shortage had much to do with the hype. And for those you don't want one because you have emulators, flash carts, etc., not everyone is a tech savvy as you, so this looks to be an excellent opportunity to get your nostalgia from your childhood and play the games you remember as a kid.
Yeah, even I tend to impulse buying these type of things without a second thought or regret, but with all of this delay, I'm seriously considering just getting an AVS at some point. I might pick up on at $20 if they go that low but otherwise, I've checked out and I'm their target audience.

My girlfriend wanted one and she has only a passing interest in video games at all. The hype for this thing was already there.
When she found out she couldn't get one she's over it now.
Nintendo done fucked up.
I have seen this with more than one person I work with.
They all wanted it the first day it came out...but now that a week has gone by and can't buy one...they are over it.
Some say they will pick it up when they see one...but I am sure by that time they will be over it too...and then just pass all together.
For her it would have been a great impulse purchase and an easy $80 for Nintendo. Now that she's reflected on it a bit she realizes how impulse it is and is more or less going to pass.
Once again Nintendo leaves money on the table and the scalpers walk away laughing.

It probably could've been up significantly more than that if they didn't leave heaps of cash sitting on the table. Just an overall bonehead move by Nintendo.

if we are talking hypothetics, the stock could have been siginificantly more stagnant or even down if they released too many nes classics and squelched the amazing hype this thing recieved for being this years tickle me elmo.

I'm not sure if this is directed to me, but I certainly am not "salty" or upset about this shortage, there are 50 million ways for me to spend money in this hobby, and I'm just pointing out that Nintendo missed their chance to sell me one of these. If the store restocked 5 minutes from now and it were next door, I wouldn't walk over and get one. I really do mean that I viewed this as an impulse buy item that I have since considered more thoroughly, and have now changed my mind about. Bottom line, I was going to buy one, now I am not. I have not lost any sleep or shed any tears over it, it's just the fact of the matter.
For example, I bought an Otterbox for my iPhone 7 Plus yesterday, and it cost exactly the same price as an NES Classic. I am looking at it right now like "meh, I could've done without this case", and I definitely would not have made a point of seeking it out later. I only bought it because it was immediately available to me at the time. This NES Classic fits right into that same level of need; I don't need it at all. If it's not there when my consumer demand is there for it, my demand (interest) might just go away entirely. That's what has happened here.
a quote from that link "The decrease in supply creates an excess demand at the initial price."
Does "excess" mean "additional?" Not exactly.
If you understand supply-and-demand, you know that decreasing supply below demand means there is excess demand. That statement does not say it created more demand. Decreasing supply just made it where there is more demand than there is supply.

Same here. Everyone at work wanted one. The only person that actually managed to get it is someone that got it from me. I took the day off from work. I made like $15 to compensate me for 3-4 hours of waiting.

some people just arnt able to understand. this thread just runs in loops over and over. its very interesting. responding with words would just be repetition. if neckbeards really believe they know better marketing strategies than the heads of an 18billion dollar company... lol pictures are the only way to do the job.
^^ thank you for posing a new thought tho. it was a refreshing change from the last half of this thread. ^^
Yes, I do believe and agree that hype generated from artificial shortage can have some effect to increase demand. In this case, it would pale in comparison to the number of units that would be sold if supply had kept up with demand until demand was satiated.
In *this* particular case, there was an extraordinary amount of hype simply from people learning of the existence of this product. I've witnessed a few dozen examples first-hand with personal acquaintances.

Yeah Nintendo have dropped the ball.
Flooding the market after Black Friday while hype is still strong would be an ideal strategy, but if it takes until January before people can just walk into a store and pick one up without standing in line, then they have missed out on a lot of potential profit.

1. People want what they can't have = hype
2. I've seen a few articles about the short supply (and many youtube videos) = increased awareness due to short supply
I assume the shortage did at least a little 'something' to the hype. To each their own.
But yes there was a hype train before the release. Honestly, I wish everyone could get one that wants one.

"$80?" It's only $60
My thought process was:
1. People want what they can't have = hype
2. I've seen a few articles about the short supply (and many youtube videos) = increased awareness due to short supply
I assume the shortage did at least a little 'something' to the hype. To each their own.
But yes there was a hype train before the release. Honestly, I wish everyone could get one that wants one.
i agree. this is pretty basic economics. its strange people here are arguing this.
a link to basic econ text. https://www3.nd.edu/~cwilber/econ504/504book/outln3b.html
a quote from that link "The decrease in supply creates an excess demand at the initial price."
Does "excess" mean "additional?" Not exactly.
If you understand supply-and-demand, you know that decreasing supply below demand means there is excess demand. That statement does not say it created more demand. Decreasing supply just made it where there is more demand than there is supply.
My girlfriend wanted one and she has only a passing interest in video games at all. The hype for this thing was already there.
When she found out she couldn't get one she's over it now.
Nintendo done fucked up.

$80 in Canada.
^^ thank you for posing a new thought tho. it was a refreshing change from the last half of this thread. ^^
In *this* particular case, there was an extraordinary amount of hype simply from people learning of the existence of this product. I've witnessed a few dozen examples first-hand with personal acquaintances.
Yes, I do believe and agree that hype generated from artificial shortage can have some effect to increase demand. In this case, it would pale in comparison to the number of units that would be sold if supply had kept up with demand until demand was satiated.

Yeah Nintendo have dropped the ball.
Flooding the market after Black Friday while hype is still strong would be an ideal strategy, but if it takes until January before people can just walk into a store and pick one up without standing in line, then they have missed out on a lot of potential profit.

US Dollar is strong right now. Canada and Austrailian dollars are weak by comparison. Even the US Dollar was almost on parity with the Euro last year.
