A Night With Nintendo

It's no secret that my favorite system is the SNES. I still love the classic 8-bit NES but it's been ages since I sat down with it. Well last Saturday night I was inspired to play it once more. Some quick thoughts from that evening...

Super C: God damn is this game brutal! I beat it with one life remaining off using the Game Genie cheat code for "earn an extra life for every enemy you kill." At first I played it legit, but I couldn't get past the first boss, and decided I just wanted to have fun and see the game through to the end. Even with the cheat code, I was dying 40-50 times in the later stages. It's CRAZY! Can any of you guys beat the game legit? You're a gaming god if so! I enjoyed it, but I have to say I prefer the original Contra. Still, it was fun. I don't remember playing it much back in the early '90s. The name change I guess really hurt it.

Little Samson: Played this briefly. Sampled each of the characters. I like the diversity each character brings to the table. Each one plays differently and it was pretty fun, although I didn't make it very far before trying a new game.

Monster in my Pocket: Played as the vampire and quite enjoyed this one. Made it close to the end. Seems pretty easy and something I would have absolutely eaten up back in the day as a kid. I loved monsters but sadly we never did rent this one.

Shatterhand: Didn't play this one for too long, but what I played was pretty enjoyable. I remember renting this back in the early '90s. Cool title and cool concept. Might have to devote a little more time to it.

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 2: The throwing box system reminds me a lot of Magical Quest. Seems like a good effort by Capcom (to nobody's surprise).

Overall, I had a blast revisiting the past with the 8-bit Nintendo. It made for a fun evening. I'll definitely be revisiting the NES a little more often going forward. I guess all this Classic Mini NES 30 game bundle release thing got into my subconscious to fire the NES up again. Whatever the case may be, I'm glad that I did.

  • Really glad you shared this with us and gave some time to Shatterhand and Monster in My Pocket. If you can, I highly recommend playing Monster in My Pocket with a second player. If you haven't l, I'd as recommend Power Blade, Tiger-Heli (I stand by this one as a personal favorite), and Monster Party.
  • Thanks for sharing! As ludicrous as it sounds, I often forget that other people may actually care to read my experiences from games that I currently play. So in a way this may inspire me to write down my experiences on some titles as I play through them now in my adult life.
  • Love Super C! I actually prefer it over Contra, I think the overhead levels work a lot better, although I did own Super C first and played it more

Super C is an excellent game, no only can I beat it legit, I did a no death run a few months ago.  Took me like 40 tries.

  • That's awesome! Welcome back to the party!

Monster in my Pocket is on my radar, now I want it even more, haha.

Super C is one of my favourites and have spent hours playing it. 15 hours at once trying to max it out. I find it easier than Contra and yeah, can beat it pretty easily. Had a couple no death runs in the 15 hour game.

Usually die a few times each run, But O ove playing through both Contra and Super C anytime.

All 3 of the final recommendations are gold, including (or even especially) Tiger Heli. Funny story: Twice as a kid my brother and I got Nintendo games for Christmas. Both times, the 2 games we received were Double Dragon and Tiger Heli. I guess our 6 year-old selves either traded or lost the games the first time, and it was extra awesome to receive them a second time. We didn't even consider that they could've given us any number of other popular games at that time, we were more than happy with just those 2.

  • I've never been good at Super C. I've beaten some tough NES games, but I've never made it past stage 5 of Super C. IMO, it's tougher than the original. Enemies are more aggressive this time around.
