Squeaky NES Advantage?

I bought an Advantage off of Amazon, it's in incredible condition, looks rather new too me. However the buttons are kind of squaky and the joystick creaks a bit. Is this normal or can I do something about it, hopefully wihtout having to open it up. The joystick I can forgive but the buttons hurt my ears lol. I guess it only squeeks when hit at the edge instead of the middle of the button but I often accidently hit the edges during Punch-Out. Also sometimes the button sinks in/gets stuck for a second.

  • Mine is the same way with the loud buttons that sometimes stick down. It's still my favorite joystick -- the only joystick I've ever been able to play well with and not feel severely impaired. I actually prefer it to a standard controller most of the time.

I actually have a few others, but I have an illogical affinity for the one I've been using and haven't tried to play with any of the others.

I have an old version of the retail box and a new version. I've also seen vastly different boards inside. One version looks like manual PCB layout and trace design while the other looks like the traces and layout were designed by computer.
  • I'm guessing it's normal then since I recall someone talking about it before saying it was a design flaw. Because the system itself looks practically brand new. There's no dust or anything on it the metal plate at the bottom of it is clean too which is something I rarely see with used Advantages. Oh wait, I forgot to test it out with Marbel Madness! Going to do that right now.
  • You have to take it apart, clean it and use a bit of dielectric grease (or silicon) where the buttons rub plastic on plastic (same with stick too) but it needs to be a very small amount.

Its pretty easy to do, all you need is a #1 Phillips.
  • I might do that later on down the road. I'm afraid of doing something I regret. I have a habit of breaking stuff when I try to fix something. I always end up overdoing it. I guess the creaking is fine, I mean it's not that loud and the squeakiness of the buttons only happens when I hit them repeatedly in quick succession. I also don't feel like destroying the tabs at the bottom lol. I know I can glue them back on but... feels good and intact.
  • Stop saying 'lol' all the time, take the good advice you asked for and do what MrWunderful says.

Bam: You got yourself a nice, non-squeaky Advantage.
  • I was mostly asking if it was normal thing that the buttons do that because I don't remember if I recall hearing if it was a design flaw with the buttons or not. I'm also trying to strike up a conversation with people. It's not normal that I can just talk to anyone here and discuss NES with them and retro video games in general. I was looking into the dielectric grease. I'm not gonna do it right now because I'm going to be going to my mom's house for a month and I don't have the tools.
  • Mine is also squeaky

    +1

  • It just needs more finger grease. Play with it.
  • Will do when I get home next week. Got my Pokemon Yellow coming in soon. I mean that's not gonna require the Advantage to play but... w.e.

Confused by the bit in bold. There are no snaps on any Advantage I've had. Just screws. I think they might be hidden under rubber feet.

  • Yeah I meant the rubber feet.
