  • Clock Tower is more like a point & click adventure game, there's way to make Jennifer (the main character) jump over obstacles, the game is driven with a mouse cursor. Human Entertainment's SOS (not Sink or Swim) is very much like Prince of Persia in its play style, though you could say it has horror overtones with the depressing theme and constant threat of death.

One other game in this category is Flashback (Genesis), very similar in appearance to Out of this World (aka Another World).
  • Flashback and Prince of Persia 2 is about it as far as SNES. Ton of these type of games back in the day on PC and today with the indie scene.

Kind of a limited sub-genre. If you want a slower paced action adventure platformer, I'd check out the Lost Viking games. More of a focus on puzzles and humor.
  • I know the perfect game: Nosferatu. It's a Prince of Persia clone with a horror theme based on the vampire/Dracula lore. Much more appropriate than Clock Tower (as Guntz has already hinted).

    Sadly, its just a cursor.
  • barrelsAndRivets, just to clarify, you are aware of the subgenre 'cinematic platformer' which is used to described the games you mentioned and matches your definition? It doesnt describe all the games accurately as they often contain elements found in other genres but when you use it I think people will understand that is what you are after and then you can define the elements of thkse that appeal to you.

Also, I think all the titles have been mentioned now but there are more on other platforms if you would like more recommendations.
  • This may be a stretch but I feel Ardy Lightfoot has characteristics of the genre

The PS1 re-release, Clock Tower: The First Fear, supports the PS1 mouse. It was fan translated to English last year too.

    Sadly, its just a cursor.

  • serene.velosity, I think 'cinematic platformer' was in fact what I was going for.

It seems like I need to locate a copy of Nosferatu -- this has been on my most-wanted list for a good while but has been quite elusive.

Ardy Lightfoot looks like more of a traditional platformer, unless I'm missing something.

    Thanks for all the input.

Have you tried the Oddworld series? I haven't, but they're supposed to be good.

I guess I was keying in more on the "cinematic" part, and not the "deliberate actions" part

  • Prince of Persia, Blackthorne, Out of This World, Flashback -- I think of these as flip-screen puzzle/platforming/adventure games, with animation that looks or actually is rotoscoped. Abe's Odyssee and (IIRC) Heart of Darkness are along similar lines.

Cinematic platformer is a good name, but I think some recognition of the flip-screen aspect and rotoscope-style animation should be in there as well, at least for this particular set of games.
