Finally played Shovel Knight

  • I think I wrapped up 100% on the normal game (all relics, shovels, armor, and hidden songs), now I'm playing through the levels again to smash all of the checkpoints for the achievement. (and collecting other achievements that are possible without a fresh game)
  • Just picked this up for my new 3DS! I have been dying to give this one a go. I'm late to the scene, this is the most modern gaming system I own. Snagged it mispriced at Walmart for 8 bucks, score!
  • I was pretty late to the party as well. I didn't play it for the first time until a few months ago. I loved it as well, although I'm not very good at it.

Were you trying it with the Float burst? I just remembered it doesn't work with that one, which is why I always stayed with the Basic burst.

Yea I was. I can't seem to pull off the quad burst that easily. I can sorta get it, but it's very difficult to pull off, and only really works in a couple areas. Anyone, still an interesting thing to learn about.

  • We have a new trailer!
  • Trailer looks great. I finally got a chance to start the 2nd campaign and I regret to inform everyone that I find Plague Knight so awkward and difficult to control that the game is nearly unplayable to me. Maybe I'm just not hardcore enough to learn his complicated control scheme but I just wasn't having any fun. This doesn't affect my overall love for this game though as any campaigns after Shovel Knight are bonuses.

    *See my earlier post

Controls are awkward at first but really not that bad once you put on float burst.
  • Just finished this game tonight 100%. I couldn't move on to Plague Knight until I got all the feats completed. One of my favourite games on the Wii U. Looking forward to the future installments.
  • I've never heard anything bad about this game. It's great.
  • The game is excellent. Loved the Plague Knight DLC, and I can't wait for the Specter!
  • Yeah, I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I ended up getting so bored with this game. I didn't find it fun. I didn't find it original. I didn't find much worthwhile. For the record I played it until nearly the end (I think I beat just about every single boss) and then just said, "meh". Found a better game to play. Still unsure why people are so all over this. Turns out I'm not the only one, there are lots of posts about Shovel Knight being overrated. To each their own of course, but I'm firmly in the camp of "not sure what the fuss is about".

"The fuss" is that somebody made a game that captures a fun combination of the style and gameplay of Ducktales and Megaman, rolled into one package.

The core game is easy enough to be accessible, but some of the achievements are tough enough to give long-time gamers of that genre a challenge.

(and the challenge modes are genuinely tough and interesting)

The end-game is a much bigger step up in difficulty from most of the rest of the game, as well, so it finishes solidly, IMO.

Personally, I'd rate it as having been more fun than quite a few of the later Megaman entries.

(and in terms of why Shovel Knight, in particular, was exciting, it probably also stems from the clusterfuck surrounding Mighty Number 9 and this game being MUCH more true to Megaman and what people actually wanted from MN9, versus what they got)

EDIT:  and the developer keeps expanding content and providing DLC for free...
  • It is the perfect blend of new and nostalgia. It has excellent controls and design.
  • Great game, played it on my 3DS with a physical copy, looking forward to play it again later as I was pretty bad playing Plague Knight.
