Getting OtA TV stations in the Ithaca/Syracuse area

I am visiting my girlfriend and may be staying for a while and wanted to get some OTA TV stations. She has an HDTV set up the living room and there is a coaxial cable running into the apt (and it is connected to the modem/router). Most TV station towers are more than 25 miles away (and most indoor TV antennas are around the 25-35 mile range). Would it be better (or even work) to disconnect the coaxial cable from the modem, split it and run one cable to the TV and the other to the modem.. or to just buy an indoor antenna and hope for the best?

Already checked on multiple maps. I would pick up two stations (maybe) clearly with a standard 25-35 mile antenna
