There's an awesome library in just HuCards alone, and some of the best SHMUPs ever made (my personal favorite SHMUP of all time is Blazing Lazers / GunHED) found a home on the system. A base Turbografx or PC Engine Coregrafx system with a controller and an Everdrive will get you gaming without a huge investment, but the CD / Duo stuff is prohibitively expensive.
Honestly a Japanese Coregrafx console comes with A/V outputs built in (no Turboboost or equivalent needed) and plays all PCe HuCard games. Due to the fact the console was much more successful in Japan than it is in the US, PC Engine HuCards are generally much cheaper than their US counterparts, and there is a much larger selection. Expect to pay up to 3-4x more for US CIC (complete in case) Turbochip games than their Japanese counterparts. Aside from a few JRPGs, most of the games don't require much reading to enjoy.
If you haven't purchased a console yet, consider getting a PC engine Coregrafx instead of the US Turbografx. As for me, I've got a US base model Turbografx, a PC Henshin import adapter, a 3D printed Turbobooster AV Output from Etsy (sadly the seller is no longer in business), a Turbo Everdrive, and a modest collection of mixed region Turbochip and Hucard games.
I don't plan on upgrading to the CD addon or Duo anytime soon. CDROM stuff is too rich for my blood...
Despite the potential save issue SGP pointed out, I'm definitely most excited about trying out the Neutopia games, since I'm a huge fan of the original LoZ (who isn't?)
Well like one of our favorite Christmas movies said, everybody loves [the original LoZ], it's a [Nintendo] institution!
I love the Turbo/PCE. The original system's chip tunes don't get enough love. Dig deep into the Japanese library. There's tons of stuff there that gets overlooked. Also:
I really can't believe this system is a little over $100, and on top of that my TG-16 Everdrive is on pre-order/backorder so it may be quite awhile before I get to try it
It is always exciting though to get a new console, well new to me anyway, right?
So I got my TG-16 Everdrive in the mail, I think it's the first time I ever seen anything from the TG-16 at all anywhere (in person I mean). I guess if Nintendo/Sega was like Democrat/Republican, I guess the TG-16 was like the Ross Perot of the era! Still whenever I do get around to getting a TG-16 console (I want to get a DS Everdrive of some sort as well as an Atari 2600 Harmony cart plus Light Sixer first), I'll be ready to try out just about whatever TG-16/PC Engine game I like! I guess it would be kinda nice to have all three consoles (SNES/GEN/TG-16) for at least one gen, right?

Db Electronics made a nice import adapter and video booster for Turbografx.

VERY TRUE. But you can burn some discs or get some PCworks repros if cost is a issue though.

It's not the CDROM games themselves that's the issue (burn away if you want), it's getting a working / refurbished CDROM or Duo unit.

Yep true you are looking in the $300 neighborhood for a Jap unit. The breifcase set up was a little more affordable (not sure if it still is)?
The US release stuff - not affordable at all, esp. lately

Neo Geo, 3DO, Jaguar, and so on I consider the "Luxury Console" movement of the era.
And yes the system freakin rocks. Jackie chan, jj and jeff, soldier blade, magical chase all great games.
Plus rondo of blood!
