What's the best shipping method for high value items?

I know many of you on here sell big ticket items so I'm wondering what your take on the best way to cover my ass.

I've been buying/selling on eBay since 1998 but until now have never sold any item valued at over $500. I'm getting ready to maybe part with a few things that may be between $500-1200 each.

Suggestions?

  • I would do priority mail insured with signature confirmation. That way they cant say they didnt get it and if the box arrives damaged they can refuse. That is what I do. There is already a ton of threads on this, but that is my suggestion.
  • Priority with signature confirmation works great. I don't believe in insurance and have shipped plenty of 4 figure and one 5 figure item without it.
  • I use fed ex or ups for some of the high end stuff
  • It's been a while, but I always used Registered Mail with insurance for high priced items.
  • You may know this but if sending priority or express mail do not use the small flat rate boxes...or at least I wouldn't personally recommend it if sending any boxed games. I have seen about 5 or so damaged now, The one I had sent, it was a CIB NES game and the box got trashed and I mean like crushed bad. I only had the automatic $50 ins. and ended up loosing about $100. Other SFRB boxes I have gotten have had dings or slight crushes enough to damage the boxed game inside at least 4x now.

But for the most part I use fed ex or priority mail for expensive items and generally do buy insurance. It has paid off buying it, ie. the one time fed ex dropped a cylinder head I had sent and cracked it, luckily I insured it or I would have been out about $600.
