Trying to find the right TV - Send Help

I'm still using a 720 Plasma and it's cyber monday, so it's time to upgrade. I'm looking for: 4K UHD, 49"-55", 120 Frame Rate, Price range of $600 but i'm flexible. I'm just getting so frustrated finding the right TV at the right price. I almost pulled the trigger on one of the TVs below yesterday, they are almost the same TV with the same retail price but one is onsale $100 less than the other, so what is the difference??? I don't want to buy the cheaper one only because it's cheaper if it's not as good of a TV. Someone help me out here, anyone know of a good TV that fits what i'm looking for or are one of the ones below good, if so, which one?

  • What is your actual goal?

Is something wrong with the plasma TV that it needs a replacement?

Do you have > 720p source signals that you are trying to use?

Personally, I wouldn't upgrade for the sake of an upgrade if your plasma tv is in good working order since it has contrast and response times that are still quite good.

Where do you see this? did I just miss this somewhere

my goal is to upgrade, my plasma is pretty hot and does significantly make the room hotter in the summer. I also, simply, do not think the picture is that great, at least not in 2016. I use this tv mostly for directv and my ps pro.

My thoughts exactly. Upgrading a TV for just an upgrade seems like a waste of money to me if the set is already in working order. Plasmas are great, at least with my experience with them, so mine are staying until they give out. Good luck in your search and be absolutely certain you want a new set before getting rid of your plasma.
  • I expected to get plenty of criticism and while I appreciate the help I may already even have a buyer lined up for my current tv. So let's just assume I don't even have a tv so I'm not upgrading. So I'm just having trouble picking the right tv.

    Things that matter:

    1) response time (frame rate of 120Hz should be a given... good response times are far from a given)

    2) a "game mode" that actually works correctly (probably need to read some tests/reviews online)

    3) a sufficient number of inputs of the types you want

Everything else doesn't matter nearly as much, IMO.  (size is pretty arbitrary and more a matter of preference than anything, resolution sounds like a given at 4K, etc)

It has been awhile since I've shopped for a TV, but there are some review sites out there that do a good job of breaking down the real input delays that you will experience, and from a gaming/perception standpoint, that is pretty much the only specific stat I care about.

  • If you plan on gaming with the new HDTV, its worth it to check out:

I've heard excellent feedback about the Samsung KS8000. Just over 1 frame of lag @1080p/4K and 2 frames of lag @ 4KwHDR. Picture quality is excellent as well.
  • I hear HDR is the option you want to future proof the TV. To my understanding the jump from 1080p resolution to 4k resolution isn't as big of a deal as game and/or video content with HDR. The PS4 Pro will be providing gaming in HDR so you might want to look into a HDR capable TV.
  • Just want to say I really appreciate all the help. Ended up finding a 50" HDR vizio. Really happy with the purchase.
