I think I'm catching a cold

So everyone in the office is sick, and I tried to avoid them, but somewhere last week before thanksgiving I caught something from someone.

So far it's just that annoying scratchiness in the throat, and I want to keep it from progressing. I'm using knock-off Dayquil, and it's helping somewhat. What's everyone's favorite cold remedies?

  • Coldeeze cough drops.
  • Hot tea helps. A spoonfull of honey with some lime juice helps.. Supposedly Vitamin C does not help, dependong who you ask, but you can take that too.
  • Grapefruits are great.

Echinacea syrup my fiance swears by.
  • I don't really do anything in particular since there is no cure for the common cold. I just try and drink plenty of liquid and let it run its course.
  • rum...it wont help cure it, but you'll forget that you're sick.
  • You should take the rest of the week off work to rest and get better.
  • I'm partial to bourbon and chicken noodle soup. Works every time.

I would if I could, but not the best time of year. Might manage a couple of days.

  • Any time off you can get will help, as long as you're resting. Other then that lots of water and lemon tea with honey in it

Time off to rest definitely helps. It is unfortunate that not everyone is able to, and it is bad timing with the holidays. I hope you feel better!

Vitamin C is great, it's all the sugar thats in commercial juices thats bad when your sick.

  • Get some of those vitamin C packets. They have various names, Emergen-C is the one I used when I was sick a few months back. Drink lots of water, sleep, and have 2-3 showers. Helps clear all the snot out and keeps your body temperature up.

  • Get yo ass some NyQuil. Feel better mate

Touché lol. Farley and Hartman FTW

  • If the cold sets in, chicken noodle soup, piping hot, tends to help the throat and sinuses. I always take knockoff airborne too. Not sure if it really works, but a few times I've shaken a cold before it really set in.
  • Us electricians always use this thing called "Manning up", works every time

This is what I do.  Pretend nothing is wrong.  Don't bitch and complain.  If you feel like you are on death's door and the lead says "you look like shit you should go home", just say "Nah I'll be alright.".  If they say it again later then reluctantly agree to take the rest of the day off.  It sucks but you'll appreciate a full or almost full paycheck at the end of the week.  I once worked through the flu or something one time.  Had a 104 temp, but just kept working.  I was only a shell of my normal self but everyone respects you more when you fight through something like that.  You'll also respect yourself more after.

  • My mom swears taking zinc helps, I usually go for chewable vitamin C seems to make it go away faster.

I am in the same boat, I never use any sort of medication for colds, flus etc....ever.

Always been a firm believer that those drugs will always do more damage to you in the long run than whatever inconvenience a sickness if causing you at the time.

  • a week off for a cold? pro tip: there are no remedies. just muscle through it
  • I get a cold every year around this time, just got over a 3-week long cold myself. I take honey for a sore throat, does wonders for it. Yep. just straight up honey. Throat lozenges don't do anything for me. And Mucinex for stuffiness, usually helps me through it a bit easier. Then in the aftermath, the constant coughing and post nasal drip, I suck on hard candy throughout the day since I find it helps prevent me from coughing.

It sucks and there's no "cure" for the common cold since the virus always evolves. I have a lot of experience with colds, I used to get them multiple times a year, always had to have a box of tissues next to me in school and work. Now I'm down to once a year at most which is a bit better. But other things that help is hot tea with lemon, ginger and honey. And also... SLEEP. I know it's easier said than done, believe me, I average 4-5 hours a night of sleep, but the more sleep you get the better you will feel and the quicker you'll recover. That goes with many sicknesses. Also, I never missed a day of work or school because of a cold. If I called in every time I had a cough I'd have been fired long ago.
  • Day quil and fluids, and then I keep on going. I don't get luxuries of days off like many others here.
  • Yeah just that time of year, I had one a couple weeks ago. I just drink lot of hot fluids, cough drops, eat spicy food and take Nyquil when sleeping. Long hot showers and plenty of rest too.
  • Zinc, vitamin C, honey and a big ol' freshly minced clove of garlic morning and night with a glass of orange juice. Not sure if the garlic makes you feel better because it works or because it feels like hell trying to swallow it.

Yep.   Suck it up buttercup, and just keep hydrated.
  • Locketts. I'm really bad right now, but I still have to work. Part of the job.

I try to only take cold medicine if the cold is interfering with my ability to sleep.

Easing the symptoms during the day doesn't shorten the cold, and other than the aspect of fever reduction, I find most cold medicines to be fairly useless.

If it is just scratchiness in the throat, gargle warm salt water.

If the throat scratchiness is from post nasal drip, get a bottle of nasal saline spray and irrigate your sinuses heavily to flush everything out.

    Otherwise, just "cowboy up".

All of the news about how dangerous Tylenol (acetomenophin) is, and how there was WAY too much of it in all sorts of blended medications, definitely caused me to revisit my use of medication for basic symptom relief.

Save acetomenophen (and ibuprofen) for when you genuinely need it (i.e. reducing an otherwise dangerous fever -- any fever < 102 you should just ride out, IMO), rather than killing your liver.

You can pretty much guarantee that the "knock off Dayquil" that was mentioned in the OP has probably 50% more acetomenophin in it than the FDA recommends as the current "safe" level.
