Gatlinburn on fire!

One of my favorite vacation spots got hit with a fire yesterday and with the dry conditions in Tennessee and the heavy winds it spread like crazy.

Please keep everyone affected in your thoughts and prayers.  Lots of pictures and videos out on the interwebs.

Sad day for one of the greatest places in Tennessee.

  • Aw damn! I'm in Memphis and have caught whiffs of burning - can't tell if it's from wildfires or people burning things

It did rain pretty hard yesterday however
  • I live 20 minutes away. I'm hoping everything gets under control. I enjoy the area very much even though I live so close. It's a nice unique place. Very sad for everyone who is losing homes and or businesses. I know some resorts are destroyed. Fortunately no reports of deaths but there was a guy who can't find his wife and daughter and the house is destroyed. Definately praying and thinking of everyone. Fires are scary. Supposedly this was started by a match. Atleast, that's what I heard concerning the first fire before it spread into multiples.
  • Very sad to see. I hope anyone in the area stays safe and out of harms way. Hopefully the fires will be put out sooner than later. Definitely a great place to visit and hopefully they are able to bounce back.
  • Midwest Georgia has been smokey on and off for over a month because of the drought and wildfires from out of state. This morning we just got the first rain we've had since early summer so hopefully it was widespread enough to help.
  • Wildfires at this time of year? That a common thing in that area?
  • That news reporter in the video is a smokin' hot backstage betty.
  • It's a beautiful area - just went there a couple years ago. Sad to see the damage. Hope everyone is okay.
  • Update: http://www.11alive.com/mb/news/local/gatlinburg-fires-whats-damaged-destroyed-and-intact/357919881

Ripley's Aquarium and all animals therein is ok, so far no fatalities reported (human or otherwise, although I expect local wildlife to suffer) and only 12 hospitalizations for non life threatening injuries. It looks like downtown survived unscathed, but some stuff on the outskirts (Hillbilly Golf & the Mysterious Mansion, among others, I'm sure) is gone.
  • That stinks, I have been to Gatlinburg, it was a great place to go on vacation.

Hopefully they can control the fires and not too many more things burn.

Of this magnitude, this is quite un precedented.  If there are large wooded areas near you, theres a decent chance that you will hear of a "small" fire every now and then, but the whole South-East US has been under a severe drought form months, so the mountains are basically a tender box.

Be aware that these fires are all over North Carolina and I think parts of Georgia too and the smoke is covering 5-6 states.

In my entire life I've not

observed this and I'm not aware of any family of friends who have seen this either.
  • Very sad. We're finally starting to get some rain in west Tennessee too.
  • Insane video I saw online about someone's drive out of Gatlinburg.

    Gets pretty intense..

NSFW as there is some bad language.

  • Did you mean to put Gatlinburn in the title?  #gatlinburn

Very sad to hear about all this ... it was a very nice area when I visited.

One of the best Freudian slips I've seen in awhile!

  • Hmm... Less of a Freudian slip and more of the fact that I can't ALWAYS need to re-read everything I write, which I rarely do is when I post on my phone.

Yeah, that's a slip up from not proofing a post.

Or he's posting from a phone, this ducking thing corrects everything!

  • Oh man! I can't believe that! I've gone camping with my family in Great Smoky Mountains National Park for almost 20 years!
  • The place was always way too crowded for me, but it is a gorgeous place.

Hope all end up safe, and the rain that is now pelting East TN gets to it as well.
  • That video Paul posted was intense. My prayers to these people.
  • Thanks for the video Paul, I've not been able to keep up with this mess since it started when my cell finally died.

It does suck, haven't been that way in years but I used to frequent it often I knew the area fairly well so it is surreal seeing and hearing things burned.

Was it ever clarified if this was indeed arson?
