PS2 RGB vs Component image quality
Hey there NA,
I was wondering what the difference was in quality between RGB and component for the PS2 and PS1 games on a PS2?
I know compononent allows for 480p, but most games are in 480i at most anyway so it isn't a big deal and just about no games i plan on playing use it. SO if RGB happens to be better than or at least equal to component for 240p and 480i content i want to use it as it will be convenient for my setup.
I am trying to plug as many things into my Gscart scart switch as possible for easy switching, especially between my CRT and HDTV. But not every system uses RGB or has better options so it is tricky.
Thanks in advance

Did you watch the my life in gaming video on the ps1/ps2?
Yup! For Ps1 it is explained that RGB is the best which is great news. But for PS2 games they don't talk about whether RGB or component is best, unless there is a video i am missing?
I am pretty sure RGB will be at least as good as component, with the exception of 480p so i think i should be good.

no you are right. I just always planned on only having a ps2 in my setup (to save space) So as im designing my rig, I ran into the same issue if I should have ps2 component -> xrgb via hdmi, but I was trying to avoid buying an xrgb for as long as possible.
I figure the RGB out of the PS2 will be good enough on my 20" PVM.
I almost never play my original xbox and when I do I will probably just deal with it in 240p on the PVM or let my flatscreen upscale it.

From what i have seen and read, RGB is just as good as component, so you won't be missing much and definitely doesn't justify buying an XRGB. Just the 480p games which there are not very many of, and still are more than playable in RGB anyway. In fact that is all the UK got was RGB, progressive mode was disabled for games for them.
I like the XRGB mini but it is a pain in the ass sometimes for everyday gaming. It is honestly why i went through the trouble of getting a CRT. Now i can hook everything up via RGB into the Gscart and then output them all right into my CRT with a RGB-Component transcoder. No lag and no signal loss.
All systems in crisp RGB on a tube tv like they were meant to be played. Allelujah.
Even better thanks to the amplified simultaneous output on the Gscart, i can output to the XRGB mini-elgato-PC monitor while playing on the CRT, when i want to record game footage.
Just waiting on some damm cables from retro_console_accessories to make sure everything works according to plan.
MLiG plans to make a PS2 video in the near future. Since most games run in 480i as you said, RGB is best. 480p from the Framemeister is not that great as it softens the picture. I hear the OSSC supports 480p over Scart which is awesome.
Thanks, that is what i figured. As of now i have a solid solution for every system i care about except for GC which is a pain in the ass. Scart doesn't exist as far as i know for US systems. So if i am to use S video it would be the only system not on the Gscart train. Not a huge deal by any means, i just would need to plug and unplug when i wanted to record footage.
But i did think of one solution. I could use a PAL gamecube with cheap RGB cables and use a load disk to play all my US region games.
