I'd do something like this based on the number of players + a first place bonus.
so if there's 17 players the scores would go like this..
1st 17 + a 2 point bonus (players/10=1.7 rounded up to 2) for a total of 19
2nd 16
3rd 15
...
15th 3
16th 2
17th 1
this makes jockeying for position worthwhile if you're in the bottom half but there's still an extra incentive for first place. might even get more players to join.
