So who puts up lights on their house for Christmas?

So who decorates their house with lights for the holiday season? We usually put a little something up at out house around a medium sized pine tree in the yard but that tree has finally kicked the bucket so we'll have to try something different. When we do something ill put a photo up.

lights are one of my favorite things about the holiday season. So lets here/see what your lights look like!!!

  • I am going to put them up on Sunday. We have a two car garage with a large upside down V shape above the door with rock work. I put red rope lights on that triangle with a large lit wreath/ribbon in the middle.

On the side of the garage (to the main door of the house) along the gutter I put multicolored ropelights along with colored icicle lights. The front of the house gets more colored icicle lights along with candle lights in the windows of Mrs. Bumppo's sewing room (which is all windows) and the bay window in the kitchen - they alternate between red and orange bulbs.

I also put more multi colored rope lights on a storage shed (think a 10' rectangle topped by an upside down V) side that faces the street.

And then we have two light up deer in the yard. And the two outdoor lights to the door of the house get red and green bulbs.
  • Not I; no outdoor outlets on my house.
  • I enjoy Christmas but I loathe putting up Christmas decorations...

Too bad you dont know any electricians.

Im going all out next year, not enough time this year.
  • The last 2 years my wife and I start to decorate the huge bushes right up against my house and get about 1/4 of the way done and just give up. We do a tree and miscellaneous other stuff inside though. I think at this point the bush lights not getting finished is a tradition. Well see how it goes this year.
  • I have noticed in the last little while that people (as a whole) have kind of strayed away from traditional things like putting lights on their houses.

    Where I live anyway.
  • I'm responsible for lights on the outside of the house and the lights on the tree. My wife does the rest of the decorating.

I keep it pretty simple on the outside of the house. I have six strands of lights that are all identical (multicolored LED bulbs). I hang them on the gutters across the front of the house and on all the big bushes in the front. Nothing super fancy, but it's super easy to setup and take down after Christmas and it looks good at night.
  • I should. My house has soffit receptacles at every corner of the house (~8 total) as well as receptacles on my two front lamp poles. It was made for Christmas lights. However, my time has been spent on other things recently (finishing the basement, decorating the house for a large number of guests on Christmas eve, getting ready for the next youngin, etc). Maybe next year
  • Heck yeah! Totally living up new home ownership. I don't let the no outdoor outlet struggle keep me down...though it was pretty frustrating! (hence my holiday avatar
  • I just throw some multi colored beer cans in the trees outside my house, good enough.

I can't afford your fancy west coast rates.   Your new house renovations cost more than my whole house!

I actually do know a couple, and I do have outlets in my garage if I really wanted to do something.

Just do what most home owners do. Run some speaker wire into the outlet and put it on a 20 amp breaker.
  • Maybe pics later, but yep! Every year around mid- to late November I step out of the second story window and onto the top of the lower roof. From there I hang two strings to cover most of the top gutter, and 5 or so to cover the bottom gutter. The side of our house is on a hill, and there is just one slanted 10 foot section of roof I can fall off of that might kill me.

Haven't done this part yet, but we usually do lighted garland around the front door, garage door, and fence. After that it's whatever we feel like. My brother used to do a bunch of lame inflatables (Santa and reindeer playing Texas hold 'em???), but he has moved out so we're done with those things.

Just tell her it is essential to the success of your relationship.

Edit - I forgot she can totally read this.

  • I have those red and green laser projector lights that shine on the outside of the house. That's it on the outside. We have decorations inside including the tree.

Thats no excuse. Just climb up the nearest utility pole, cut the wire, and slice in a wire to run to your lights

Its always been steady around here. If one house doesnt decorate one year another one that didnt before does. So it always seems about the same amount of lights in my area

She won't see this. She's too busy rolling up the change that was in her swear jar.

Ha! I did the same thing, got some light up mini christmas trees and a snowman and that was it. Took all of 10 minutes too. I didn't even want the laser lights at first, but my wife really liked them, so that was the end of that discussion. lol

Ol' Cap doesn't do heights.    We could put stuff in the sun room (also known as the pumpkin rotting room) if we really wanted to be festive.

Can I take you up on that offer?

Growing up, I lived in an apartment, so we couldn't do anything like that, and the house I own now.... well, it's not safe to decorate the outside due to how close it is to the road.

I also only have 1 outlet on the outside of my house, which doesn't work AFAIK.

  • Living in a condo, my outside options are limited.

Inside they are less limited, but I haven't even gotten started yet.
  • No, but I certainly appreciate when other people do it.

Call me cheesy, but I enjoy a good ride around town to see lights. Doesn't even have to be Christmas lights, but that is a bonus.

First snowfall of the year last Sunday in Milwaukee. We got about 8 inches, sounds like another 8-9 on the way this weekend.

Man your house rocks, I have always loved those wrap-around porches and the balcony is just the icing.

  • Wonder if anyone's ever done anything video game related in their lighting...
