NES Classic Edition : Emulation Quality

How good is the emulation on the Nes Classic Edition ?

The Nes games on Wii virtual console suck ass , horrible emulation , crazy input lag .

So I don't have high hopes of Nintendo getting the Nes Classic Edition emulation right .

  • I believe Czroe or his brother have a few videos where they test or compare, I know they at least have something on the sound.
  • My Life in Gaming's reviews also mentioned some things were not quite perfect.

Thanks , I watched their video review . And like I expected from modern Nintendo (the company only cares about money and not quality) , there is sound and input lag . So the Nes classic edition is a piece of crap that I won't be buying .

Thank the lord for Everdrive !!!! Because if you rely on modern Nintendo to give you a quality gaming experience your gonna get screwed .

    Here is Ichinisan's latency demonstration:

Game Mode was enabled and it's an XBR-class image processor. Even SD stuff like Wii VC doesn't feel this laggy in that TV but perhaps it's the TV. Most sets have less trouble scaling an HD image but an older set like this one might have the opposite problem.

The main issue I have is the D-pad. It is much too sensitive to diagonals, but most people will never notice and it's an easy fix: If you have original D-pad plastic around, the parts are somewhat interchangeable. The issue comes from the center nub being too small, so swap in an original D-pad and profit.

  • Don't get your hopes up. It's better than virtual console and computer emulation in my opinion, but still isn't quite right. The sound is different in spots and there are other subtle graphical differences. Not a big deal for casual play but may bug someone who is serious about their gameplay and control.
  • I've been having a good time with mine. I own nearly all the games on it and don't notice any degradation in play experience. I have no problem kicking butt in Super C so I guess that's all that matters

I have a hard time believing that, other than people being tricked by the fact that they are using a "real controller".

If you're using a decent USB controller on a PC, and that PC is hooked to your TV (and using it as a monitor at its native resolution), then that is BY FAR the best emulation experience available.

(in terms of latency -- both input-related and display-related, and in terms of accuracy -- i.e. you have your selection of every emulator available to pick the most accurate)

I found the latency worse on my (been using the same old emulator forever) emulator than the NES Classic. Having said that the game performance was definitely more true to the original on my computer, absolutely no question. I'm sure there are better emulators, but the control is actually pretty tight on the mini from the few hours I played on it.

  • The screen melt effect seems to affect all games in different ways. I believe it is intentional and probably meant to reduce flashes and flickering -- so it's not quite as likely to trigger an epileptic seizure. Of course, that kind processing introduces more latency...

I found horrible latency in several emulators, but I found FCEUX with the right settings has no noticeable lag.
