I've come back to modern gaming!
After the awesome years of the PS3, Wii and DS, the transition to new systems was very shocking to me. I had lived through plenty of system transitions over my life starting with Nes to SNES, but I just really didn't want the Wii/DS years to end. The 3DS was neat, but the lack of games early on left me unimpressed. I decided to take a long break and catch up on retro games I had not gotten around to.
I eventually settled into original Game Boy, and beat nearly 100 different games. I also gained a collection for GB that had over 80 games. I eventually scaled it down to just games from established series, and aimed to get all the GB versions of those games. With the final game I wanted in the mail for me (Adventures of Lolo), I decided it was time to get back into the 3DS, as it has a fairly similar library to the GB at this point, with the key inclusion of Kid Icarus. I bought a 2DS, (as it was my favourite 3DS model before I gave up on the system) and purchased Metroid Federation Force, Pokemon X, and Donkey Kong Coutry Returns.
I gotta say that as much as I'll always love the NES and Game Boy, I wouldn't want games to go back to that format. Say what you will about modern gaming, but it IS a lot better overall. I'm not going to sit around and pretend black and white gaming was the pinnacle of the medium. Metroid Federation Force (despite the reviews) has been absoultely outstanding, and Pokemon X really is a humoungous improvement over previous entries. Donkey Kong Country Returns plays things pretty safe, but has also been a great experience since I can finally play this game without the dumb motion control rolling.
As much as I love retro gaming, I still want to keep up to date with my favourite series. The fact that I'm going to get to play a new Kid Icarus game after all these years is pretty exciting to me, though I'll have to wait a while before I can afford it. For now Federation Force and Pokemon are keeping me plenty busy. I really recommend you give Federation Force a shot if you're on the fence about it, since it really is outstanding.
Anyhoo, just wanted to throw it out there to always keep an open mind, and don't lock yourself in the past. Games have come a long way, and you're missing out on a lot of wonderful games if you abandon modern gaming forever. Sure it's pretty expensive these days, but if you have the money for collecting boxed Game Boy games, then you might want to consider playing something a little more current with that money.

I've probably missed the point of your post and now I may begin rambling so maybe I'll stop myself and rejoin the conversation later. I don't hate modern games, but they rarely give me the joy of my favorite games from NES and SNES. So, I stick with what I know I like for the most part.
I highly recommend shovel knight and cave story 3D if you haven't played those yet. If you want some more recommendations for 3DS games to play, let me know. I'm sure everyone else will help out too.
Glad you've seen the light haha. The 3DS has a great library! The wii u, not so much. Sure it has a couple but nowhere near as many as the 3DS.

Right now I'm focusing on obtaining and playing the games from Nintendo's primary line up of franchises. My Nintendo GB collection is...
Tetris
Solar Striker
Super Mario Land
Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening
Metroid II: Return of Samus
Kid Icarus of Myths and Monsters
Donkey Kong
Balloon Kid
Yoshi
Wave Race
Kirby's Dream Land
Wario Land
Mole Mania
Pokemon Red
I want my 3DS games to reflect that with a similar line up.
Tetris Ultimate
Super Mario 3D Land
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Metroid Prime Federation Force
Kid Icarus Uprising
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
Star Fox 64 3D (To take the place of Solar Striker as the spaceship shooter game)
Fire Emblem Awakening (to take the place of Balloon Kid as system exclusive series)
Yoshi's New Island
Pilotwings Resort (To take the place of Wave Race, due to their similaraty of being relatively unknown properties until their N64 sequels)
Kirby Triple Deluxe
???? (To take the place of Wario Land)
Animal Crossing New Leaf (To take the place of Mole Mania.... animal centric game with a mole in it? :S Kind of a stretch....)
Pokemon X
After that I might explore the system a little more in depth, but that alone will be enough to keep me busy shopping/playing for quite some time.
So far I own...
Tetris Ultimate
Zelda A Link Between Worlds
Metroid Federation Force
Kid Icarus Uprising
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D X-II New Special Pikachu Edition DX Featuring Bomberman + Cats 64
Fire Emblem Awakening
Pokemon X

Interesting idea! Not really sure what replaces wario world. You could always play wario world on the 3DS via the eshop haha.
3DS is looking pretty appealing though.. ive heard good things about Link Between Worlds. I'm gonna have to see how the Switch comes out and decide which one of those I'm going to upgrade to.
Nothing wrong at all playing in both modern and retro eras and at times both.
Cannot argue with you on 3ds. It is bringing me back into handheld gaming. I generally have no interest but I keep finding myself firing up animal crossing.
While I know it's unlikely, I'd still really love to see Wave Race come back to handhelds. All three games sold quite well, so with a solid track record I'd say it has a chance of a revival similar to how Punch Out, Kid Icarus and Pilotwings got one. Course I would understand if it doesn't happen, and I'm already really happy with Nintendo's 3DS line up of franchises.
