Wasting Meat or Food in general

Alright so this woman at work was telling me about how she was having supper with her family last night and she didn't like the meat they had so she threw the piece out (Because of the *flavour*)

I have a huge problem with this, there is probably someone in that household that would have eaten that meat and something had to die so you could eat it...you should respect that.

So I said something to her about it and she flips out saying that she paid for it, she can do whatever she wants with it etc.

Is anyone else extremely bothered by this sort of behaviour or is it just me?

I had that same thought when I saw all the food they threw out at KFC.    The hopper that held the fried chicken waiting to be sold kept spilling over, and every piece that would hit the counter they would throw away.

  • I feel that way about wasting food in general, and in making sure to finish my plate (or box it up in a container for lunch the next day). Not specific to meat, though.

For about the last year and a half I've been composting. My neighbor has a compost heap and I keep a container in my kitchen with all the extra bits from chopping vegetables (as well as coffee grounds and eggs). Helps me put less into my trash cans while also providing my neighbor with good soil that I'm always welcome o use
  • While I personally don't like to be wasteful like that... she is correct in that it was her money and she can do as she pleases. We may not like it, but that is true.
  • When I moved recently, I had to get rid of my old fridge, and thought I could keep some meat in a cooler for a short time. I screwed up the timing and the meat spoiled. I felt really bad about wasting it (not to mention what I had paid for it.)

Making sure that doesn't happen again.
  • You should see how much edible food grocery stores throw out.

I ended up changing the thread name, you are absolutely right.

  • Wasting food in general bothers me, but meat is a much different story. If something had to die for you to eat it, you better finish your damn meal (spoiled meat aside). I have no problem smacking somebody in the mouth for throwing perfectly good meat away. Most of the people that throw it away have no concept about where their food even came from
  • I'm sure they have an idea of where it came from, it's that they don't care.

That is why I put emphasis on the meat specifically because it really is a bit more of an issue.

  • If the food tasted like soap and was making me vomit, then yeah I'll throw it out. Otherwise, if I think it's something I wouldn't like, I wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

    Plants are people too!

  • I hate wasting anything. I try my best to limit what I buy that I won't use or has little purpose. I threw out a thing of Xmas lights (bought 2nd hand) the other night and just felt terrible throwing this big heap of plastic into the garbage. I try and avoid anything that won't last for a very long time or isn't disposable in earth friendly manner. New Brunswick's recycle situation is fucking terrible compared to Nova Scotia where I use to live - Basically everything goes in the trash here which makes me sad.

I guess I have no opinion though since I'm a dirty hypocrite that drives a car and typed this on a machine made by fossil fuels and my life depends on oil   That's pretty much where all these opinions end up online anyway.
  • It is horrible, I feel like the US is the worst. It just sucks because if they give expiring food away, and the person gets sick, the donor is liable. I think there is a documentary about expiration dates in grocery stores.

I better see you first in line to buy an electric car when they're available commercially   I always found the comparison to cars bullshit. What are the other options exactly? Take the bus? Also fossil fuels, and personally I value my spare time, rather not waste it waiting. Walk? Cool, what if I work far from home? Bike? And then what when it rains or snows?
  • DO THEY KNOW ITS CHRISTMASTIME AT ALL?

Reminds me of back when Serj from System of a Down was on some huge environmental kick and pretty much chastising people for driving instead of walking, etc.

My favorite comment from a fan- "Yeah, because you ride to every show on this tour on fucking horseback.   Go fuck yourself dude."

  • I hate food waste and its a very big thing here in the US.
  • I dislike it, but when people spend their own money on things, it's up to them to do as they please.
  • I do my best to save any food scraps left behind my family of 6. I put it all out for our chickens. It's amazing what they will eat and it keeps the garbage cans from smelling like total shit in the summer. I wish I could get my hands on some more thrown our food for them to enjoy. And it all gets recycled into the eggs we eat!
  • I waste a ton of food. Wish I didn't, but oh well. I would Love to have someone chastise me in person about it though
  • I feel more strongly about wasting booze. If you opened or odered the drink, you better finish it or give it to me.

I can get on board with that thought.

Yeah, but you're in one of those blue states that always votes unAmerican.

  • I dislike wasting food, its like burning money when you have to chuck food you paid for. That said I have thrown out food I've wound up not liking, so Toxie's story doesn't bother me as much as it does him. I mean it happens we try something new that doesn't work out. It would be a different story if the lady was buying the meat, eating a small portion of it, and tossing the rest on a regular basis. That shit really bothers me with people do that.
  • For those of you who don't know, Toxie starred as Jesse from Free Willy:

  • it makes more economic sense to throw away food deemed expired, unedible, not fit for resale, damaged, etc for corporations like supermarkets. why? declare it as a business loss tax write off of these products and they get the full amount for it. think of it why would corporations bother going through the motions of determining what is or isnt edible and where or how to donate it, not even mentioning the financial aspect of doing all this for large quantities of items, when you can throw it all away and get full price for it. this is what is commonplace in these organizations, whether or not it is ethical is another question. personally, i only buy what i know i will eat and store very little food on hand.

My problem with this is that animal was only alive in the first place to be eaten. If it weren't for people being so wasteful with food, that animal would likely never have been born in the first place so I think a few years of life is better than nothing. If someone gave you the option to live 10 years or not at all, what would you choose?
  • I began to feel this way a while back when I realized I was cooking more food than we needed for each meal. I would always put it in the fridge to be eaten later, but every weekend I would end up dumping a lot of food in the trash. Made me feel guilty. I've learned to cook much less.
  • Ok mom I'll clean my plate. Geez didn't know you were such food nazi.
  • With all the cats inside, and dogs that pass by here very little gets wasted here. I still toss out any spoiled fruit and vegetable, peelings, egg shells, coffee grounds out in the back yard. I don't cook more than I know won't be eaten within a couple to three days.
