Looks pretty neat. They seemed to be playing up the similarities to self driving cars though instead of the rfid I would have bet on. Maybe that solves cost of rfid tag issues?

dont like this at all. but got a feeling that this wont work or will not be popular because believe it or not, i still believe the majority of the us population would not like a corporation like amazon keeping records of what they buy at the market.

Unless you pay cash everywhere, corporations already do this.
Smarts store, huh? Pfft, if this is strictly just a no-checkout thing, then this is pretty dumb, IMO. Maybe if it were an alternative option to a store that has existing regular checkout lines. OPTIONS are convenient, not extremes.
Like seriously, what if your phone died? What if you don't have an expensive phone? Those people are just boned? You gonna deny them food? What if they got kids to feed? Cash doesn't die in your pocket and anyone can use cash. If you're in a business, you want to broaden a demographic, not subject it to a certain group.
Stupid stupid idea. In Hipsterville USA no less... I guess that explains things...
I was curious about that too. The video shows you get through the turnstile (enter store)("log in" like a website) by tapping your phone. Very feasible with a security guard/manager or two. Just a question of access. This is how public transportation entrance works these days. If it becomes a problem you just increase the quantity of employees on site. It's not a great model for the benefit of the workers, but Amazon has never, ever been about that.
I dont trust it. I have to correct my cashiers at walmart constantly because the price rings up wrong. Unless one is not money conscious, the lack of personell will be a detriment.
Yeah...who's to stop someone from walking in with or behind someone and filling up a basket and walking out. How do they associate items to accounts - they are smart and I'm sure circumvented most of these headaches, but I didn't get to watch the vid while at work. How do you do returns? Lol, cool concept though.
Here's another thing I just thought of: How would you be able to shop with a friend, use the same buggy, and have separate bills? Would there be some sort of conflict going on?
"Hey, get that for me, it's too heavy. Oh no, wait... it charged it on your phone. Put it back, no wait, gimmie your phone... no wait I can't carry the item anyway... AGGGRRAAHH!"

Guys do you really think that such company as Amazon didn't think of stuff that you talking here about? Come on now, I am pretty sure they covered all those issues. Now will it be popular and convenient only time will show.

Plus, it's cashierless, not employee-less. I'm sure what they're hiring for onsite tech support balances out the cashiering aspect.

I am sure they weighted out the differences between those salaries. There are a lot of nuances like keeping the count of items in isle and etc. I am sure there will be people working like maintnance, people who restock shelfs and others. If that app will work without a hick it would be less $ than paying to cashiers and managers. All they have to do is create a seamless system which other companies will follow/copy.
Can I get you grandpas some lemonade while you sit on the porch and bitch at the world?
If is a hard lemonade, then yes, yes you can sonny.
I know where grandma keeps the whiskey.
Well good, as she took it when she left, couldn't take my sexy manly ways, she complained a lot anyways. Why I remember back... when... ...*zzz* Hmm? Wat?! Now dab burn it, what in tarnation DO YOU WANT NAO?!

I was also wondering. Do many places in America use tap? Its everywhere her in Canada, but on a recent trip to the states I did not see it anywhere.

It's around, but by no means widespread. You'll find it more in the bigger cities.
One more step towards generalized unemployment, yay!
We'll just put everyone on welfare. It'll be fine.

so basically it's like nothing happened?
I am curious to what type of security something like this would have, maybe like a mall cop or something.

Bear traps and leaves, mang, all you need. Save your energy for calling those people who "remove" things and don't ask questions.
I guess we'll have to wait and see how well it's executed.
