Do you wish controllers were still wired?

Is 3 hours a lot?  Hell yes.  That's like an eternity of playing video games for me.  Sometimes I might play for 20 minutes and have to leave it paused for several hours until I can get back to it.  The only time I might get a full hour to myself is when everyone (including my wife) is asleep.

But I wouldn't change it.  Not for anything.

Ha, yeah, with a 3 year old and a 3 week old, having 3 hours to myself is an eternity right now!

But fortunately, when the older daughter is napping, everyone else tends to nap for a couple of hours as well, so that is my sanctuary.

  • While wires can get pretty messy I still prefer wired controllers any day of the week. But maybe it is because I play so much NES, SNES and PC Engine which all have wired controllers
  • Not really at all. Wires all over the place are just a pain... and my cats chew them.
  • Here's a question: what, in you guys' opinion, is the WORST wired controller?

I'd have to say the Genesis controllers are the worst - only because the controller itself feels light and cheap (even the six-button), and the wire actually weighs more than the shell - making all sorts of tangles happen. They fixed all of that with the Saturn controller, IMHO.

    +1

I get to play my current-gen(XB1) games maybe once or twice a week. It's hooked up to our only actual HDtv in the main living room, so my playing it means nobody else gets to use the tv. So, I basically have to sneak in some time when nobody else is home, which is a rarity. I spend the rest of my little free time on my laptop emulating stuff, playing a DS, etc. When I get to use my actual video game room, my youngest follows me down there and wants to play games, too. Which, hey, I'm all for that. It just means I never get to actually play whatever game I went down there to play in the first place, lol.

Amen. With a career, a pregnant wife, and a 2 year old boy, even if I get a half hour to ahour at night I'm generally too tired to play a game and just pop on youtube and passout.  Not to mention with all the cimematics in modern games you generally need a half hour for the intro to a section of the game.

Some people just have a hate on for Genesis. Both the 3-button and 6-button controllers rock.

Great reason to ditch modern games and stick with older "retro" ones.
  • Love wired controllers. I do have a 10ft PS3 controller cable and love my wired XBox 360 controller. Wish wired would return to being the standard. I will find wireless more tolerable when the controllers stay sync'd longer and the batteries last MUCH longer.
  • For controllers without motion controls, I prefer wired. Couldn't imagine a wired Wii controller, though.

For worst wired controller, I nominate the following:

    1: N64

    2: Dreamcast

3: The original, gigantic Xbox controller. The small versions were so much better.
  • Oh yeah, forgot worst wired controller.

Dual Shock 1/2/3 because they're uncomfortable in my hands. Believe it or not, if a PS1/PS2 game doesn't use the analog sticks, I'll use the original PS1 controller, those sticks get in the way of the D-pad and buttons.

Speaking from the experience of a similar situation, it's a great reason to simply focus on indie games and emulation, since both offer faster pick-up-and-play than modern consoles, and both offer much more convenient saving than actual play on older consoles, for when he inevitably has to cut his gaming session short...

(Guntz -- from the "aging" thread, you made it pretty clear that your opinions about modern consoles are focused solely on AAA releases, with no real awareness of the huge volume of interesting "indie" games that exist -- you really owe it to yourself as a gamer to expand your horizons a bit and look through some of the truly excellent content you've missed in the last 10-15 years)

The problem with indie anything is quality varies widely. Not just in if the game is good, but in political messages and other garbage like that. I don't need my "retro" games to be in HD resolution as I don't believe in HDTVs, I don't want them being politically correct and I prefer classic properties like Nintendo and Sega games. Is that so wrong?

Do you have some specific example to point to of (widely considered to be good) indie games with some offensive (to you) political message?

I certainly haven't seen it in the dozens of games I've played over the last couple of years.

What is "so wrong" is you continuing to beat this drum about how shitty modern games are, yet you apparently have no practical knowledge, at all, about the subject, as it pertains to a HUGE portion of what is available over the last 10-15 years.

You are certainly welcome to have a preference.

It just comes off asclosed-minded to have that preference formed in ignorance of your actual options, when that ignorance is easily rectified if you so chose.

In terms of "quality varying widely"... good thing there are gameplay videos, reviews, and ratings from other gamers!  (that, and that fact that when you buy these kinds of games on sale, they rarely cost more than $2 - $5, if that)

And I'm sure we all know that quality varies widely on classic systems, as well.  That is certainly nothing new, so is by no means some kind of black mark against indie games.
  • Yes, the weirder the better!

I'm not commenting further on political messages, for obvious reasons.

I hate having to watch game videos on YouTube as many are polluted with annoying commentaries by "entertaining personalities". I also hate using Steam because it's bloated and totalitarian. When you have to upgrade your computer just for a download client to play games, you know there's a problem going on.

I'm getting tired of explaining this stuff, you already have your mind made up.

What obvious reasons?  I'm genuinely curious about what games you're referring to, because you're complaining about something I've never encountered.

I too, hate watching videos on Youtube, and I never do.

(not almost never... literally NEVER, do I watch reviews or commentaries on Youtube)

You are welcome to dislike Steam, but there is also GoG (DRM-free), and quite a few of these games are available directly from their developers, DRM free.

You really sound like the one with an overly made-up mind, when you are harping on games and platform that you proclaim to have essentially no experience with.

I will freely admit, though, that my "ind is made up" that there are many GREAT indie games out there, that are well worth playing, and that any serious gamer that completely eschews them is doing themselves a disservice.  (though i suppose ignorance might be bliss -- then again, your grumpy tone on the subject suggest otherwise    )

Obvious reasons: Political discussions never end well, we all have our differing opinions and politics never mix well with video games.

What games? I'll keep it simple, I don't like sexual progressive-ism in my games, that's all, that's my preference.

I'm not harping, people keep jabbing me with questions...

I simply don't see what the problem is with playing older games exclusively. I don't feel as if I'm missing out. My free game time is limited, I would rather spend that playing my favorites and older games that are new to me. Adding modern games would further fragment my free time, which I am avoiding.

Put it to you this way, I don't like HDTVs, I don't like watching games on YouTube for "reviews", I don't like Steam, I don't like modern trends in mainstream games (load times, cutscenes, etc) and I don't like the idea of dumping piles of money into the tech money hole we have today, where we must upgrade constantly.
  • Ninja Gaiden has cut scenes. And load times aren't a trend...

Honestly, that doesn't simplify it, at all, since I still have NO IDEA what games you're referring to.

I really don't understand your reticence to provide a clear example, so we can at least know we're talking about the same thing.

I promise that I'm not going to drag you into a political debate or try to change your views on some non-game-related topic, if you can just give me a clear answer to the question

  • Yeah... I have no idea what that means or what it pertains to, either.

I can probably think of a bunch of AAA titles that fit the bill (anything GTA, Saint's Row with the dildo-sword, etc).

I'm hard-pressed to know what he's referring to in the indie game arena, though, unless he's talking about that dark corner of the market reserved for the kinds of people that buy hentai games...

  • I dunno... wasn't there a fake rape scene in Hotline Miami 2 or something? I've never played those games.
  • Even 'nostalgia' has it's limits. Who the hell misses the tangled up, leg tripping, cat chewing, messy wires?

Yeah, but that wouldn't take a great feat of engineering to fix. Bore the plug 1/2" into the body of the controller for reinforcement, and voila. I really wonder why they don't do that already, it'd give the same stability and aesthetic of a wired controller. I don't know why they've decided to just leave the plug hanging on by the dinky little micro USB tangs, but you're right, the current connection is not nearly as sturdy as it should be.

  • I prefer wired controllers because you don't have to worry about the battery going flat also batteries die over time. Wires don't bother me in the slightest unless they're short like the Master System comtrollers or the Famicom/Super Famicom controllers. I just wrap the cords around the controllers and put them in a draw they never get tangled at least for me.
