Voltron Video Game

I'm a huge Voltron fan. My question is was there ever a plan for a Voltron video game? With all the movie/cartoon franchised games out there especially during the early gaming years. How did one of the most popular tv shows of the mid 80's and even into the 90's not get some sort of video game release somewhere? I haven't really found much information out there on anything relating to a possible game version or even homebrews. I know a game eventually got released for the PS3 and 360 later on that kinda sucked. Also in Japan I think the vehicle Voltron was more popular than the GoLion. It really surprises me, especially when things like Knight Rider and one of my favorite characters (The Shadow) had a video game at least planned.

  • Good question. I don't think there was ever one in the makings, nor any plans iicr. Usually, even if the game didn't get past development and was sh*tcanned, for this particular franchise, someone would have at least heard of it in a magazine or something.

Awww, now I wonder if there's an unearthed prototype on an esoteric console or computer system sitting in someone's attic somewhere. lol
  • Yeah ... sadly there were tons of game-worthy 80s cartoons that never got games. Gummi Bears and Bionic Six come to mind. One of the most surprising is definitely Voltron.
  • ^ Even the transformers. They were much bigger than voltron and they really never had a notable US release until n64.   I suppose there was a c64 release but nothing on a major console until then.

Macross/robotech didn't have one until what, xbox, I think.
  • Macross had the Famicom game, like Transformers did. That's about all I remember.
  • What was the Macross game? I've never seen it.
  • It was a pretty standard but well done shooter. You could transform the ship to Mech to do different things.

There were a few here and there on XBOX, GBA, Gamecube, etc.

But technically there isn't... cuz we all call it "Robotech".

I was referring to Tulpa's most about a Famicom game.

But yeah, I actually have the complete Robotech series in my car (I've have dvd players in there, ha).  I'm a fan.
  • I just find it crazy that when the localized Robotech for the US, they took three completely separate anime series and made them work as one.

Imagine taking Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and Firefly and making them take place all in the same universe.

    lol nice.

Since you're a fan, I've got a question for ya. I haven't seen Robotech in a long time, and I know the same can be said to most localizations to a Japanese series to a North American one, but were there any dramatic differences between Macross and Robotech besides language and names? I thought I've read somewhere (or someone told me, I can't recall) that even though they're based off one another they're totally different (Like Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger vs. Power Rangers)

  • It's like Tulpa said, the biggest thing is that it's 3 different series lumped together to make one whole history. I guess you could say it's akin to the Sentai/Rangers stuff because they take unrelated series and place them sequentially with new dialogue to make it one story. Personally, I've only seen the US versions but I've seen a lot of talk about how it's different and that seems to be the main thing. One of these days, I need to actually watch Macross and all that stuff in the original form. I've watched some of the Sentai stuff and it's pretty nifty. Just all a matter of having disposable time.

It wouldn't have aired if they didn't did that, so at least it got aired. From what I remember there aren't considerable differences between Macross & Robotech: The Macross Saga, but the other 2 series were forced to take into account what happened during Macross.

Yeah, I know. They had to have a certain number of episodes in order to get a syndication deal, and it took three whole anime series to hit the number (65, I think.)

Capcom could have done well with Gummi Bears, since it was Disney. I mean, we got a freakin' TaleSpin video game, why not Gummis?

And that theme song on chiptune would have been awesome.

Same here, maybe I'll jump back into Robotech whenever I have the time. Maybe some Macross too.

I know this is going off topic a bit, but the Sentai Zyurangers is actually pretty good IMO. I even like it better than Power Rangers a bit.

  • Yeah, we completely derailed this thread. We should just make an anime/sentai/whatever thread.
  • Macross always had shitload of games, way before xbox or N64. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Macross_video_games

But Gundam always had more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Gundam_video_games
