Do kids today believe in Santa Claus as much as we did when we were kids?

  • To all the ones with kids that still believe and also want said kids to remain believeing has anyone considered popping in the animated movie Rise of the Gaurdians? Might could help expand the belief a bit longer and possibly answer some questions like "why can't Santa die?"

of course we need to get the opinion straight from the source. someone page commander santa

I'm 31 years young and my mom (dad plays along) still to this day does this exact thing. Santa was never revealed to me or my sister as being fake, in fact my mom will go as far as saying if we claim he is fake we won't get gifts. Lol

She always does Santa every year, we spend the night, have to go to bed early so "Santa" can come, wake up in the morning and gifts are under the tree, unwrapped and arranged very carefully in separate piles. When the parents wake up they of course still ask "so what did Santa bring you this year?" And the whole nine yards playing dumb like they don't know.

One year I argued doing Santa with my mom and she got pretty brutal with me about it, so since then I play along and while it might be childish I admit I actually do still enjoy waking to what "Santa" brought. I imagine this tradition will never die and someday when I'm 60 I'll still be waking up to Santa gifts. Haha

    Thats a great book.

That it is, figured most here would prefer the movie, but by all means read the book, or both I do.
  • I found out there was no Santa in a sad way   I heard on the news and such about kids who get little or nothing for Christmas, and that didn't seem to make sense because I would've figured Santa would've made very sure they'd get their fair share of presents. That's when I found out that Santa isn't real
  • Fact: Santa Claus exists.
  • I believed in Santa Claus untill 6th grade. I don't remember how I figured out he wasn't real, but it wasn't through technology(at the time, I only used our family PC to look up Mario Kart Wii shortcut videos and I didn't get a phone for another year or so). My mom was the major reason I kept believing in Santa Claus(Dad just played along). She loved doing it for both me and my sister and even when I told her I figured out that he didn't exist, she still said Santa was real.

Its hard for me to even wrap my head around someone having a wii as their video game system as a kid.
  • I had to play along because my brother was 5 and a half years younger than me. So for 4-5 years I had to just go with it. I wasnt going to ruin anything for him.

Yea! Who else would that be taking pictures with me at the mall? You expect me to believe its just some guy in a santa costume? Like that would ever happen lol

  • In my opinion, it is better to teach our children the origin of Santa Claus in what Saint Nicholas did for people. Teach the spirit of giving and self sacrifice. Santa Claus is just based on him. That's what we do.

I think even most kids know that the Santa at the mall and such are Santa's helpers, and that the real Santa at the 'Pole is very busy this time of year!

You mean like how he dropped gold coins down the chimney and there were stockings hung at the fireplace to catch them?  So that is how the whole chimney and stockings thing got started!    Now we know...

  • What a tragedy that more kids are finding out that Santa isn't real. It ruins a wonderful tradition.

You know the tradition where parents flat out lie to their kids and tell them that this wonderful magic fat man with a white beard flies with reindeer and a sleigh and comes down the chimney, eats cookies you help bake out of the love and kindness in your heart for this Santa, and delivers your presents because you have been on the nice list of kids. And then when you find out it was all fake, which if you didn't find out until you were like 10 you clearly didn't give it any thought because if you did you would immediately realize that it defies the laws of physics that Santa could do that to all the children of the world in one damn night and have room in his belly for all those cookies. But regardless now you know that your parents made the whole thing up and lied to you every December in an attempt to make christmas more fun for you. But all it really did is cause a strain in your relationship which may or may not get fully resolved until 10-20 years later because this lie was only the beginning of your problems with your parents. And then when you have kids, you have to do the same thing to your kids too because you lie to yourself and tell yourself what your parents did to you wasn't that bad because it was just tradition.

    That tradition?

Would it really be the end of the world if parents didn't do the whole Santa thing and just told the kids the truth? We bought you this present. Merry Christmas. That's how I was raised and guess what? I still had fun during Christmas.

Other kids I know, well not so much.

I know this post was way over dramatic but I hope it was a fun read at the very least. Haha.

    Yes I'm only kidding.
  • i was 4 or 5 when i figured out santa wasnt real. it just didnt make any sense to me how a fat guy could fit down a chimney especially mine cause i had a pellet stove growing up so the chimney exit was only 2 inches wide. but because of the smart phones and "Santa location apps" would possibly make a kid believe a bit longer today.
  • Does anyone find it strange that parents willingly take their children to go sit on a strangers lap???

I mean, really.... what in the fuck kind of weird tradition is that??? Taking your kids to sit on a strangers lap.... what?

    I think it's weird.

It's no wonder lots of kids cry and freak out. You're FORCING them to sit on a strange persons lap and get groped/held by a stranger. It's very strange to me.

Beyond the folklore that went crazy after he died, he lived a very noble life.
  • My son is nearly 8 and certainly still believes in Santa, but he's been asking a lot more questions about him. His teacher does not allow them to talk about Santa at school and we don't give him free reign on the computer (only learning websites) so he can't find out that way. But my wife and I really make the effort to keep the dream alive. Presents from Santa and Saint Nick, taking bites out of cookies, and always writing a letter to him.

I think technology really helps convince kids too. There are websites where you can make personalized videos with their name and if they have been good or bad. It is very convincing, especially when they are under 5!

I don't believe technology/smartphones are convincing more kids, I think it's more dependent on the family situation. If your parents really make the effort and if you have older siblings. I don't ever believing in Santa, but my parents never took me to see him and I had two older brothers.
  • Yeah with kids having smartphones and instant info access it's really really hard to keep the SOS (Secret of Santa). Whereas I didn't even know there was an Internet until HS (and I was introduced to the Nesticle emulator then as well, it blew my mind that you can play actual NES games on your computer, wow!!) and the only websites I knew of were majorleaguebaseball.com and beckett.com (I was and still am a big sports card collector as well as retro gamer/collector) and it was a sloooooooow as molasses (I didn't get fast/cable internet until college (early 2000s). It honestly blows my mind how different the world and tech is now compared to ten or even five years ago!!
  • I say keep the dream alive for tradition. I dont worry about who officially gives the "big" or "best" gifts. Its only for the first 7-10 years for kids. They got the rest of their lives to get any and all presents from their parents or other real people.

I dont feel the need to take credit for the nicest gifts. They'll know it all in due time.
