Let's talk ball. Basketball that is.

  • I like the idea of the NBA more than I actually like it.

    The players are lazy.

I mean, I can't really blame them. It's kind of like an "unwritten rule" that they don't truly play hard. Playing over 80 games a year is a TON... so they've held back their play (as a whole) so they can make it through a full season easier.

Watch an NBA and College game side by side if you don't believe me. Although, if you're looking into this thread, I'm sure you understand.

Only in the playoffs is when things start to get interesting, in the NBA. If the Raptors make the playoffs I'll probably order TSN for a few months/games while they're still in.

I don't even know how they're doing, or how ANY team is doing.

Durant joining the Warriors kind of killed it for me. I know it's business, but joining a team that kicked my ass years in a row would be blasphemous! I couldn't imagine joining a different high school team (although we won all our seasons.)... 5 highschool championships, BABAY!
  • I watch every rockets game. Their are 4-5 games out of 82 each year that the effort isnt there(typically youll later find out certain players had like the flu or something), but i dont buy they are lazy snd not trying. If thats how your team plays then you got shitty players. Thats just an excuse for lazy fans.

College basketball is fun sometimes, buy my god they suck ass at basketball. No one can shoot or play offense. It makes my eyes bleed. The one and done chaos aspect of the 68 team tournament is the only thing that saves the sport

watching the 2 side by side you will see college bball is a 20 fold worse product. I cant stress enough how hard it is to watch college basketball when you also watch nba
  • Id also like to add, what a beatdown houston gave to the new boogie cousins pelicans!!

Looks like lou williams is a perfect fit

27 points 7 3s in 20-25 minutes without even practicing. Not even shootaround that day
  • One other pick I have with the college game is the ridiculous number of foul calls. It's not even basketball at a certain point, just opposing teams breathing on each other and trading free throws. The 2-halves format contributes to this, as team can reach the bonus with 15 min left to play in the half.

As for the effort, I watch a majority of the Celtics games, and when they lose, it's not for lack of effort. Don't let the high scores fool you into thinking that defense isn't being played. The shot clock is shorter to promote an increased number of possessions, the painted area is wider and defensive 3 sec in the key is a tech, the restricted area is larger, and the game is longer than the college game. Couple that with the fact that most NBA players are vastly more offensively talented than college players, and you end up with a situation where playing defense is REALLY tough.

I missed this and just posted without reading through the thread, haha. As this posts indicates, this is exaclty how I feel.

Just curious. Have you ever played basketball? At what level? I'm talking organized, indoors, with referees and score-keepers.

The guys in the NBA don't even come close to playing at their full potential in the regular season. Hell, most times there's at least one player WALKING up the court on offense... Walking.

Okay... Take note of how many times there's players walking up the court. That's laziness.

My comparison to College basketball is not of skill, it's of effort.

The two are very differently paced games.

When the NBA playoffs start, you can see the change of pace.

It's OBVIOUS that they are being lazy, haha. It's ridiculous that these guys get paid that much and they're walking up and down the court. Haha, that's not basketball.

Are the college players FASTER than NBA players? Of course not. The college game is a faster pace because the players are hustling.

It's an unwritten rule that guys don't hustle (as much as they could).
  • College isnt a faster pace. They have a longer shot clock and have no offensive plan. Just pass around the perimeter. Maybe your mistaking a full court press as effort? You do that shit in the nba and youll be getting scored on at will. Teams in college are desperate for turnovers snd fastbreak points to score because they suck so bad at traditional offense and shooting, and college players arent b-ball smart enough to consistently break a press. College basketball lowered thrir shot clock to 30 to speed the pace up it was so slow. But still wont go to 24 seconds which is baffeling.

I dont know what games you are watching but unless an nba team is running a half court set players arent walking up the court. Even at that its the point guard. Not the team. Rockets coach d'antoni will bench your ass for walking up tge court

you can watch college ball brickfest foul fest all you want, i just totally disagree its at any faster pace. With all the fouls, the longer dhot clock, the poor play, its just not.

go tell patrick beverley, my favorite rocket, hes lazy lol.

Again I ask... have you ever actually PLAYED the game?

This is important because I can tell by your responses that you're not understanding what I'm saying.

The game is most certainly a different pace. Shot clock is irrelevant. That got changed BECAUSE of the laziness and guys walking around, haha.

Players in the NBA walk up the court... WALK... what else is there to say? haha...

"Faster pace" = Guys actually running to spots and hustling.

Also, I'm sure the coaches of the College teams you're referring to do certainly have an "offensive plan".
  • I watch every rockets game, and a ton of nba games. No one is walking, unless its the point guard and the mission is to run clock.

Any anecdotal walking is irrelevant. You are implying people are just walking for the entirety of the game consistently. Thats just not true

any pace you assume is faster is just a mirage in college. They cant run offensive sets with much skill so tons of cutting and passing around the peremiter praying for an open shot. Its a foulfest and a brickfest. Of course not every college team. Some are overwhelmingly so much better they score at will.

Are plsyoffs more intense? Of course. Ssme with college basketball, there is more effort in the tournsment. Playoffs and everything on the line tends to do that.

You are repeating a cliche argument here. You yourself said you dont even watch nba. You already have it in your head though that the players are lazy so youll look for confirmation bias anytime you watch.

Go tell my favorite rocket player patrick beverley hes lazy. Lol

nba is transforming into a faster pace league. Very few teams are still half court grind it out style anymore. Players are mnt walking up the court. You only have a 24 second shot clock.

again you are seeing a full court press as pace of play and hustle and thats just wrong. Nba players would pick that apart in 2 seconds. College basketball players are horrible at offense and grind out the clock consistently. Yup , they do have a plan, players suck to bad though to actually execute it consistently

pace of play is about possessions. I dont think you understand pace of play or you're own argument
  • You can like college better all you want. Not going to tell you what you should like. Im just saying your pace of play argument isnt the case.

College is slow. Foul fest, grind thr clock, poor offense. Turned on the louisville syracuse game on cbs. My god, that was hard to watch. 17-15 over 11 minutes in. Just brutal. Foul foul foul, brick brick brick. I know thats anecdotal, but without the do or die tournament aspect its just bad basketball.

maybe you perceive frantic play as faster pace? I mean pace of play in the nba is much faster. College basketball alot of times is played more franticly, because they play sloppy and horrible.
  • If you missed the Celtics/Cavs game tonight, you missed a great game. Tight the whole way, tons of ties and lead changes. Some great highlight plays (Kyrie's reverse to tie it late in the 4th was sick).

I stayed up for this Rockets/Clips game, but it's a blowout snooze fest.

Of course players don't walk the whole game. But there's walking.

It's a generally understood "unwritten rule" that players in the NBA don't hustle as hard as they could during the regular season. As I stated, they need to save their bodies, 82 games is a TON.

That's why the pace of play (and intensity) picks up in the Playoffs. Enough said.
  • That whole point is ridiculous, college players walk the ball up the court as frequently as pros. And worse than that, there are teams that intentionally limit the number of possessions in a game. College teams that literally wait 15-20 sec before even initiating their offense.

If you want to discuss the flaw in the NBA, it's the system that rewards tanking with top draft picks. Get rid of that, and put in a system where the last 2 or 4 teams in the league get shuffled down to the D-league (or something similar) and you'll see the lower tier teams taking every game seriously. As it stands, the top 8 of each conference (and a few teams still in playoff contention) are the teams giving all effort. But that's more than half the league out there trying to play good ball for a playoff berth or favorable seed. So there are plenty of good games to watch.
  • q4n are you a Splash Gordon fan?

I'm still picking the C's to take the 2 seed in the East

Looks like I'll either be proven right, or happily mistaken by the end of tonight. The 2 seed is a lock and with a Celtics win or Cavs loss, we'll take the 1 seed.

There could be some shuffling at the bottom of the East playoff bracket with Indiana, Chicago, and Miami still fighting for the remaining 2 slots. That'll be interesting to watch.

The west, on the other hand, is pretty much decided.
  • The stage is set! It's playoff time!
  • Welp its rockets thunder getting the prime time slot sunday night. Probably the biggest series of the first round

James, the real MVP , Harden vs. Russell, Arbitrary even stat number less efficient record usage % MVP, Westbrook.
  • Cavs fan here. Not a band wagoner, live between Akron and Cleveland.

I am overall excited for the playoffs. All teams give maximum effort and the NBA product in general really shines.

It's RMVP vs. Statpadbrook, Round 1 *fight!*

  • i use to watch a ton of b-ball with my dad. he loved the celtics back in the mid-late 80's. born and raised in south florida i(andmy dad) became a heat fan when the team started.

its hard for me to watch it anymore. i dont even watch the finals. imo its to soft. flagrant fouls are being called on guys for what used to be known as "sending a message" personal fouls.
  • Pistons are going to have to blow it up after showing some promise last year but i can not freaking wait for the playoffs. I didnt get a chance to watch most western conference games this year so i am really excited. I think a second round match of of golden state and la clips is going to be great if the clips can get by the jazz.

    Really looking forward to rockets/thunder

The east will probably be a joke until boston and cleveland.....however it is funny that chicago beat cleveland all 4 times this year.

Chicago almost never loses games on TNT though, they've got a big streak going, and I think that's where most if not all of those games were aired. Brooklyn was 4-0 against Miami and then got swept by them in the Playoffs a few years back so it doesn't necessarily mean much. Wouldn't have guessed that Cleveland would end the year tied with Toronto in the standings though. For all we know Atlanta Hawks are going to the Finals this year, East should be a little crazy.

  • First year I didn't watch a single game of basketball, not even sure I'm going to watch the playoffs.

I've been boycotting all sports for a while now except NASCAR cause what kind of redneck hillbilly would I be if I didn't watch a little NASCAR here and there... It's been kind of refreshing!
  • I'm a casual Cavs fan, more of a Browns/Indians diehard fan. I've only watched a handful of games all year but I will watch most of the playoffs. I'm honestly anticipating the Indians season and Browns draft more at the moment as things for the Cavs shouldn't get interesting until the Eastern Conference Finals and then (hopefully) The Finals. Hopefully everyone got enough rest for a deep playoff run. It works out that the East is so easy so this team can have more time to gel en route to the Warriors rubber match. I think they'll make it to the Finals but man do they look susceptible this year.

Also, I'm stoked for the Blue Jackets in the playoffs. I really wish they weren't facing the Penguins in the first round, it's not fair to either team to face such a good opponent so early but it's how things go in the NHL. Hopefully they can right the ship in this series as I hate all Shittsburgh teams but I'm not holding my breath

thats why cleveland rested with 1 seed on the line. They were too chicken to play chicago. I dont care what they say. you are tied with the 1 seed and own the tiebreaker, and you rest 2 of your 3 best players with only 1 more game left?
  • I only now have noticed that Mike Dunleavy of the Atlanta Hawks seemingly is no longer referred to as "Jr." when his name is used in official context, I wonder when that happened....you usually don't see sons of well known players with the same name ever drop the "Jr." in sports

I'd love to see Paul George dominate that series and pull off an upset. It would be hilarious to me if they went out in the first round because the Cavs (and namely Lebron) have harped the "seeding doesn't matter" rhetoric.

That said, I'm not overlooking Chicago. They're banged up, but they still have some weapons. I still think the Celtics can close this one out in 5

  • Harden beat Westbrooks ass tonight. 31 point beatdown
  • So Bulls win game 1 and in Bulls usual fashion they will drop the next four. Fun game though and IT played incredible after losing his sister. Jimmy is the man and Portis really brought the heat in the fourth. Mirotic is still flopping garbage who has no place in this league.
  • that was one of the most pitiful nba playoff performances I have ever seen last night by okc, and mainly westbrook. He was broke as a joke and the more alarming thing was how many times he threw the ball into traffic for easy steals.

It seemed their whole team was missing bunny lay ups as well.

That and Harden played fantastic and bingo 31 points. That was ugly. That dude 1 on 1 has got to be the best in the game so damn quick
