Repro boxes (GENESIS, SNES, N64, MASTERSYSTEM, GBC, GBA, etc.)

Hi guys, my name is Grazi and I'm from Brazil. Here in Brazil it's really difficult for collectors to find original game boxes, and when we find one it's not always in good conditions. So people love to buy repro boxes for their games, and the closer of the original, the better! The thing is, i'm moving to US and I would like to continue this work, but I'm still getting into your culture, so I would like to know if you guys like this kind of work, if you use to buy it, etc.. how do you like it?

I already made game boxes for: Sega Genesis, SNES, NES, ATARI, N64, MASTER SYSTEM, GBA, GBC. And now I have this project of start making consoles/handhelds boxes also. You can see in the image below that I'm working on a GBC Yellow box, 100% vectorized (except the screenshots), and now I'm treating the background image in Photoshop. So I think the result will be really nice!!!

I used to make repro boxes a long time ago, like this: (this material is different from what I'm using now)

And this is an exemple of the new material I found:

Now, few years later, I have studied Graphic Designer and I'm able to make a better job, because now I can improve the image so much more too.

Just remembering, the images are not downloaded from websites and printed, they receive a long Photoshop treatment, and many icons and texts are all new (vector).

So I would really appreciate if you guys could give some feedback of what you would like to see in terms of REPRO BOXES, like, 100% loyal to the original, custom version, etc. Just tell me <span class= " class="bbc_emoticon" src="http://atariage.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/atariage/icon_smile.gif" style="border: 0px; vertical-align: middle;" />

  • Whew boy, this might not turn out well.

Most opinions here you'll find that if it is closer to the original, then it's very unwanted.
  • Oh boy, the mob's a comin' now. I personally don't care as long as there's at least some distinction that it's a reproduction (i.e., text on the box saying 'reproduction'), but a lot of people here have some pent up vitriol for this topic.
  • Its Forbidden to sell exact replica stuff on here

Identical not clearly marked repros are very frowned upon

On a personal note, ill never understand why anyone would want to collect fake shit. It defeats the whole purpose. You can make your stuff look nice on a shelf without exact replica real boxes if thats the excuse.
  • Nice, Friday afternoon at work and I need to kill 4 hours.....

Please don't lock, my sanity depends on it!
  • Yes, if you can make sure anything you sell here is clearly marked as a "Reproduction". This includes labels, manuals, boxes, inserts, posters, etc.

You can even go as far as to make it completely different/custom to distinguish it even more from the original, but be careful... it still may not save you from any copyright infringement.

If you're going as far as to enhance already existing art, why not help out people in the homebrew or indie community? There's always people looking for someone to help create a nice quality art and material for the games they create.

You're moving to the US...  to go to Alabama? Someone should of warned this guy!
  • Alabama is the default. They most likely didnt select a location

  • You think Brazil is the only place where it's hard to find good condition original boxes?
  • NintendoAge is definitely the best place to come promote your reproduction boxes. Folks here prefer information direct from the source whenever possible, thanks.

Thank you so much for the polite answer! The culture is a lot different so it's nice to have someone sensible with wise advises. I'm a homebrew publisher with my husband of ColecoVision games and I already work on the artworks of these new games (box, label, manual and promotional arts), so I think in US for me it will be better to keep in this "designing new box arts" path... instead of making these repro boxes. Anyway it's good to know. Thanks again.

I, as most here will, agree this path of making new box art will be a less of a headache in the long run. Also to reiterate what was said, here on Nintendo Age 1:1 reproductions of any artwork be it, box, label, booklet, any sort of paperwork that can be easily passed as original is not, will no, nor will ever be allowed here and as seen is generally frowned upon.

However, some like myself do love seeing custom artwork for just about anything, I've seen (and own) some I like much more over the originals.

    Also, welcome to Nintendo Age.
  • Make some creative alternate ones?

While you may prefer your copies to look as close to the originals as possible, as you can see from the comments our stance is otherwise.

    No problem.

This forum is mostly a collector forum, so we have a "collector" mentality for the most part. Most of us here go by a code of ethics to ensure nothing in turn gets circulated and misconstrued for something that's authentic. Some people may want it to look 1:1, but there are alternatives if you need a compromise.

If you can, please go over the site's rules in the FAQ for any additional information. http://nintendoage.com/pub/faq/NA/

If you have a question, feel free to ask.

    Also, welcome to the forums!

  • I'd love to have some custom art for boxes etc. Maybe consider going with the feedback to make the re-pros with some "identifier for them" for a lower price point and also make the custom art boxes for a higher price point. I think there's room for both as long as it's honest.
  • Welcome to NA (and soon the US!). I hope you have better luck finding real boxes here

Let's hope he appears soon, I love his talk about fakes as well as 1 CC games. He's always a delight to have in a thread with his upbeat stances.
  • Thank you so much guys for the better reception than the first day.

Of course if I decided to make 1:1 reproductions I would add something in the barcode saying that its a reproduction, my intention NEVER was to trick anyone, please don't get me wrong. Now I can see that you guys have a different perspective from Brazilians, and please don't get us wrong, we don't PREFER copies, but we don't have much originals in here, and to import from any part of the world would costs us more than the product (taxes) many times, so we have no much options instead of create reproductions =/

but everybody knows that it's a reproduction. Anyway, it's good to know that you guys like custom arts, I could make some, it would be really fun   I was wondering what would be more practice and cool way about the packaging of custom boxes, make paper boxes or UGC?

The problem we have with 1:1 reproductions is that it can be very hard to tell them from originals, and people (at least here) pay a premium for originals. Like someone said, it isn't easy to get the original boxes in North America, either. But we don't put up with counterfeit items on Nintendoage. Too many people have gotten burned by them.

If it clearly and conspicuously says reproduction, it can be tolerated. It may not look totally original, and that's the way we want it to be. Custom items are actually praised here.

Even if you have good intentions, the buyer could be nefarious in their intentions if they tend to resell and trick another unsuspecting buyer. In turn, it makes the original seller look bad and overall it's bad for the hobby.

As far as the boxes, the sky's the limit!   Some like UGC, while others do like a good quality cardboard/paper box.

If you want, check out the custom label thread: http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=7&threadid=53870

You're more than welcome to use or alter anything what's there. I will admit, not all my work is the best on there, and some art has been lost over time, but it's also a place where people are looking for custom work as well.
