  • I thought it was OK, and will not see it again for awhile.

I thought the characters were forgettable (except for the asian guy).

The first two act's were pretty boring in my opinion.

For a movie where we basically know how it is going to end, the plot and action didn't get me excited (Learning about the engineer of the Death Star was cool though).

I didn't like the CGI humans (Tarkin etc.)

    What I did like:

The 20-30 seconds of Darth Vader at the end is badass, and it almost worth going to see it just for that.

I liked the beach/palm tree planet (Scariff).

Lol! 2 thumbs up!

THIS!  Ever since leaving the theatre after #3 I said man do they need a 3.5.  That's exactly what this was.  And man are you right I'm still hard from Vader illuminated by his light saber.  It felt like playing heros vs villains in Star Wars Battlefront and using Vader.  So much awesome.  Especially when he put his light saber through the guy and through the other side of the door.  Some of the computer animated cast members coming back were obviously fake but still it worked out well.

  • Here's a question.... I keep hearing people say it's a "stand alone" star wars film.... buuuuuuuut doesn't it take place right before the original trilogy? As in between Episodes 3-4?

So, it's a standalone film in the way that it's not going to made into a trilogy? Then does it count with the first 6? Now 7? But... it's not Episode 3.5 so it doesn't count as an "Episode".

Okay... so it's a standalone film between 3-4 but it's somewhat of an aside and doesn't count towards the "Episodes".....?
  • Its standalone as in, not about the skywalker family like 1-7 were
  • Also, standalone in that it was not totally needed haha. They covered it in 4 with "we got a hold of the death star plans" and everyone seemed content with that. Cool to see how it happened though.

I just got back from it and absolutely loved it. Last 45 minutes or so were excellent.

I wish there were more Vader. That final scene was only like 3 min. I could watch a full hr of that and be entertained, lol. What a badass.

In the context of the story, I think they used Vader just right. Really, the story didn't involve him until the very end. It would've come off as generic fan service if he were in the movie more than he was, IMO. It would've taken away from the film's active antagonists, as he would've eclipsed whatever they were doing.

I'm honestly just a bit confused as to why the majority of footage used in the trailers and marketing never actually showed up in the movie. Like, Jyn Erso facing down a TIE Fighter. Never happened. No Rebel pilot captives on Jedah, either.

I agree about Vader. Personally I loved the movie. I enjoyed TFA too, but I think this was even better.

They did a lot of reshoots for the movie, so I'm thinking those scenes from the trailers were cut later, whether it was because it was too long or continuity or whatever.

The tie fighter scene on the tower was cut because supposedly an xwing was about to take it out before it got her. But the scene right before it had an xwing saving the day on the beach last second which would be redundant. Id personally wish they kept the tie fighter one and cut the other lol
  • Oh yeah and I thought that while the computer generated characters were easily recognizable as fake, they were FANTASTIC! Tarkin blended in decently well I thought.

The first time I watched it, I didnt even really notice much CGI with tarkin. I was more paying attention to what was going on and what they were saying. After hearing people bitch about it , like it was the worst thing in movie history, the second time I watched it, I looked for it. Yea it looks like a ps4 cutscene the first time you meet him. The second scene is much better though, when there is some shadow cast over him. Couple of later onces you can notice the cgi more when his mouth is moving, but imo it was some of the best facial cgi Ive ever seen. Im glad they put him in the film, I love his character.

The cg is really my only (minor) issue with Rogue One. I was glad to see Tarkin and didn't really think about it until I saw Leia and it drew me out of the moment. Then I remembered that Peter Cushing had passed away after I was out of the theatre. Still top notch though, and I see the need for the cg which was pretty limited.
  • I was actually pretty distracted by the CGI for Tarkin. I'm not saying it was the worst thing, but I feel like it could have been made better. It's almost like in the effort to make it feel real through subtle face twitches/expressions they added too many and overshot a natural look. After seeing how Tarkin appeared, I expected Leia to be the same. So when her scene came, I wasn't as distracted.

It was still cool to see the characters though, so I'm glad they put them in the story
  • I haven't seen it and probably won't get the chance to see it in theaters, but I've heard nothing but good things so I'm interested in seeing it when it comes to On Demand.

I'd love for it to continue as a series of books, comics, video games, etc like in the 90's. But seriously, there hasn't been a good Star Wars movie since 1983. Be honest with yourself. I know the first 3 are some of the greatest most important films of all time and I know we'd all like more but take off your nostalgia goggles for a minute and look at the new movies objectively. The prequels sucked. It took a long time for people to admit that to themselves. Everyone pretended they were great at first. Now everyone acts like they knew they were bad all along. Episode 7 sucked. Again, like the prequels everyone defended it at first it but slowly but surely people are beginning to admit that it sucked. This new one, I haven't seen it but the trailer looks like absolute caca and I'm pretty sure it sucks. There's a pattern here. I don't need to waste my money to find out if it sucks because every star wars movie for the last 17 years has sucked. If you want more good Star Wars go back and read the Thrawn trilogy or play Dark Forces or something. There's a whole universe of Star Wars books and games that are great but aside from the original unaltered trilogy the movies are just awful. Just my two cents.

If you watch the awesome documentary, "The people vs George Lucas" then you will find that many people at the time of release found the prequels to suck. The force awakening is different. The acting is good, and the storyline, while very familiar to a new hope, is actually decent and leaves a lot of questions to be answered in the next movie. To say awakening sucks is a stretch. I feel like what you were going for was, it disappointed you because it wasn't as good as the originals. Well I got news for you. Nothing will be as good as the originals. Even if a star wars movie comes out and is objectively better than one of the originals, it won't be to the fans who grew up watching the originals. Lower your expectations.

As for the new rougue one movie, it is actually very entertaining and probably better than awakening. If you like the original trilogy, you will like this movie. Maybe you should give it a shot. Redbox it when it comes out or something.

No I'm not one of those people who like the prequels. Those movies are laughably bad.

Very familiar is an understatement. They repeated all the plot points of A New Hope. That's what made that one so boring to me. I knew what was going to happen before it happened. Yawn.

That's true, and I do wish they actually tried something more original. They definitely played it very safe. I think they were just trying to avoid making another prequel level suckfest, and they were successful, but the final product was only decent while it could have been fantastic.

No, that's not what I was going for. What I was going for is that it sucks. I hated that movie. I went in with the lowest expectaions I could have and it still dissapointed me. I went in expecting it to be bad but I at least thought I would be entertained. I wasn't. I honestly prefer the prequels. At least the prequels are so bad they're good. And they're interesting in that they are one man, George Lucas's insane vision, he had complete creative control. There's no other movie like them. Force Awakens is just painfully boring. It's a bland paint by numbers made by comittee Hollywood blockbuster. I was so bored watching it. And I will give Rouge One a chance eventually when I have the opportunity to watch it for free in a setting where me and some friends can drink and make fun of it, but I'm not going to pay money to see it.

Well you are in the minority. You are the only person to make a claim such as that force awakens is less enjoyable than the prequels. I think that's ridiculous. But to each his own. I give it a 7/10, personally. Decent film, could have been better.

Rougue one is objectively and subjectively the better film. The action and battle sequences are epic. The plot is actually interesting and makes sense and ties in really well to A New Hope. The acting is great. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
  • Well I think my opinions are objectively and subjectively correct and yours are not so there.

And another thing. It's really easy to go back to 1999 and cherry pick footage of people saying the phantom menace sucked. But most star wars fans defended it at the time just like they're doing now. And there are plenty of people now saying these new movies suck. I'm one of those people. All my friends in real life thought it sucked. In 10 years if someone wants to make a doccumentary about how much these movies suck there will be plenty of footage they can use to show people saying it sucked at the time.

Ugh man, we made it the whole thread with out referencing that debby downer post. You arent going to change his mind. He wants to hate it, so let him. Look, he just said hed eventually see rogue one for free so he can make fun of it drinking with buddies. He isnt going to even try and like it lol.

Hes just one of those miserable people. And there is no point talking to him. Ill personally never understand wanting something like a show or movie series to go away simply because I dont like it, when so many people do. Thats just selfish. And besides you can always just not watch. I never understood the mentality of prefering less of something that doesnt affect you.

We went this whole thread without quoting that post, imo because its over the top ridiculous and didnt even deserve a response. And you took the bait. Smh

OP asked for opinions and I gave mine. That makes me a miserable person? Because I didn't like one movie. And as for it being "selfish" to want star wars to just fade away. Think about it like this. There are only so many movies that can get made and released every year. Imagine if the original Star Wars was never allowed to be made because they were still making Flash Gordon serials. I think this current trend of non-stop reboots and remakes is destroying our culture. Personally I thought Guardians of the Galaxy was the best Star Wars movie since Jedi if you get what I'm saying. But you know what you're right. I never should have posted in this thread. Three things you should never discuss with people. Religion, Politics, and Star Wars.

Meh. I saw a post I thought was interesting and unique and I responded to it. Plus it certaintly spiced up the thread a little bit. It's never too bad to spice up a thread when it starts to get a little worn.

You're valid to me, mattbep. You're valid to me.

I'm gonna go ahead and throw another unpopular opinion out there.

Jar Jar is the best character in The Phantom Menace. Not even trolling. I mean that.
  • I thought it was pretty damn good. It was Star Wars that didn't try to remind me every 10 seconds that it was Star Wars. Plus we got to see who Red 5 was before Luke and he immediately reminded me of Porkins.
