It actually has a few really good themes in it. I just dont think they highlighted it well. Dude composed the soundtrack in 4 weeks though. Other guy was fired and he took over

  • Not going to read any responses before I reply to this. Saw the movie today. I'm a huge fan of Star Wars but for my own reasons I had doubts about Rogue One. People tried to convince me to go see it and while I would tell them 'Maybe I will... but I'm not really interested' they'd eventually try to argue with me about why I should see the movie and spoil things while I specifically say I don't want to know anything about it... So, yeah... eventually did see it because I had nothing to do. I did love the movie. My initial reaction is 'best one since Empire' but that could change. I enjoyed the movie a lot... and the thing that pissed me off the most during my viewing was the fact that certain things were spoiled for me while I tried to not be spoiled so I could have a fresh view once I did decide to watch. And please don't tell me it's my fault for waiting... I told everyone I don't want spoilers or to know things but their arguments against me were spoilers. That's just dumb. I'll read through this thread and make another response.

I'm gonna go ahead and throw another unpopular opinion out there.

Jar Jar is the best character in The Phantom Menace. Not even trolling. I mean that.

You know, I don't get why people think he was the worst part of the PT.  He was there for stupid humor for kids and played his part.  Didn't really bother me.

Another post of yours I would comment on is the 'what if they kept making Flash Gordon and didn't do Star Wars'... but Star Wars was meant to be a Flash Gordon movie.  I'm assuming you knew that, so I'm not sure what you're getting at... Since it was a reskin and retelling of something that George Lucas already loved.  Aside from stealing from Kurosawa movies.  Star Wars is kind of the epitome of the dumb shit we see in movies today.  Retelling and stealing from everything else.

My point is that the original Star Wars was a Flash Gordon movie without being a Flash Gordon movie. It captured the spirit of it while doing something totally new and original. They could make a movie today that's like Star Wars without having to be called Star Wars and without reusing the same old characters and imagery that we've seen for the last 40 years. We certainly don't need a new one every year for the foreseeable future. It's ridiculous. There's no heart to these new movies, it's just exploiting a brand. To me these movies are in the same category as straight to video Disney sequels like Bambi 2 and Cinderella 3. And I can't be the only one thinking that bringing back Peter Cushing with CGI is really creepy.

  • I agree with you. While I enjoyed the 2 newest movies, I don't like what they're doing. New Star Wars every year is overkill and it just weakens the brand. Even though I like it now, I will eventually hate it.

I think calling him the "best character" is mistating it.  He is a TERRIBLE character, in almost every possible way.

BUT he was certainly one of the best ACTED character, in that the voice actor actually had some level of emotional range.

"the worst part of the PT" would go in this order:

    1) terrible, wooden acting, pretty much across the board -- likely due to the poor direction from Lucas (since we know that many of them are very good actors in a range of other movies)

    2) casting Hayden Christensen -- in EVERY movie I can recall seeing him, he is a total whiny loser (Star Wars, Life as a House, Jumper)

Maybe he is just typecast that way... but man it is ANNOYING.

    3) grinding through both Sith and Jedi characters as if they were disposable -- there is absolutely NO SENSE of aww or power.

They are pretty much all just cannon fodder.
  • I liked the last 2 (rogue1 and TFA) and i like the idea of making a lot of movies in the franchise. yes, it takes away from the specialness of it all, but if one's weak, it's not nerdageddon
  • I'm with you on trusting that Disney will be protective and respectful of their SW/Marvel franchises for financial reasons. Too bad Warner Bros isn't as careful and just ruining the DC movie line.

Yeah, you got it. He's the best character, because he's the only character. Everyone else is just like a blank, monotone, peice of wood. And that's why I think he get's a lot more hate than he deserves because he's the only one in the movie who's even remotely memorable.

  • I'm not going to read the debates above, but I will simply say that I thought it was amazing. Possibly my favorite Star Wars movie... ever! If they feel like rebooting VII and adhering to canon this time around, then Zahn's trilogy could dethrone it, but that isn't going to happen so Rogue One it is!

VII is Canon. Your precious EU books aren't.
  • Finally got around to seeing the movie. I enjoyed it. Hopefully they continue to make movies that are worth watching.
  • Old dead guy was done well. Nice use of short shots, darker scenes, and enough side/back of head that it wasn't super obvious. Leia was just bad, close up full frame at high brightness. I think a much better ending would have been the side view of her putting data into R2D2. I was expecting there to be more time between episode 3.5 and 4, so it was cool there is no gap. Seeing Vader rip through a line of guys is the most memorable moment right now.

It wasnt the characters , it was the dialogue. Just bad writing. Characters were fine.

and no jar jar wasnt the best character. Fart jokes dont belong in star wars.

and to touch on earlier subject, palpatine was clearly the best prequel character and actor. He hammed it up. He was great

At least fart jokes are timeless. Unlike the instantly dated millennial humor in Epsiode 7.

Did you know the oldest joke in recorded history is a fart joke? An ancient Sumerian saying, "Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband's lap"

bantha fodder wasnt a fart joke. Its bantha food.

It actually was only mentioned once in the original trilogy. Jabba in Return of the Jedi.  Says to han "you may have been a good smuggler but now you're bantha fodder"

Only other time its in the movies is episode 1 and 2. The same damn episode that gave us fart jokes
  • Rogue One was fantastic. Definitely better than The Force Awakens. Surprisingly, it didn't really contradict A New Hope in any way, and CGI Tarkin was done astonishingly well. Good movie.
  • Eh... he is right that the humor in The Force Awakens is out of place.
  • Even though it did jump around a bit, every locale was well thought-out and interesting. Really enjoyed the movie.

Mini spoiler: it does get sad. But overall does shape out to be a pretty good prequel IMO.
  • When watching Star Wars, you know that they're trying to get away from the Empire at the beginning of the movie. What I really liked about the ending of Rogue One is that it adds urgency to that scene. You don't know the circumstance at which they're running from them... and it basically is a matter of if we don't get away the RA dies because of the mess we've made. Found that an interesting addition to the original movie.

I dont see that at all. Just watched the force awakens again. Humor seems fine to me.

It's supposed to be sad. Everyone's supposed to die. If they didn't, you'd see people complaining why none of the characters ever appeared in ANH.

'Who talks first, I talk first? You talk first?' Thumbs up with a lighter. 'Why does everyone want to go back to Jakku? Do you have someone on Jakku? A boyfriend on Jakku?'
  • The only one i didnt like was the boyfriend line. Only because there was no lead up of attraction. Was kind of out of nowhere.

The thumbs up droid was great. Gave the droid personality. Didnt feel out of place to me.

Maybe the problem you are having is that george lucas(terrible dialogue writer) wasnt doing the film and there isnt wooden dialogue.

to touch on earlier subject. Palpatine was the best prequel character. Ian mcdiarmid hammed it up and was great.
  • I loved The Force Awakens. But the humor doesn't fit Star Wars. And the droid was nothing but R2D2.

Edit: Before someone misquotes/misunderstands me. Yes, Star Wars has lots of humor. This is 'millennial' humor that he was speaking of and I agree that I felt these jokes were out of place. Did I think they were funny? Yes. But it's not what you expect in Star Wars.

Oh... and I know Lucas is a hack that fails on his own.

    Dude, spoilers!!! lol

I see what you're saying, but with it being a supplement/side story to the universe rather than something that's part of the main series, they could have gotten away with having them all be alive and with only our imaginations to what they're all doing in the following movies.

I know the Rebellion's small and no where near the size of the Republic, but I can imagine them off doing other missions while the main story characters play out what they do in the main stories. Heck, they could even make them older and bring them back for fan service to the main upcoming stories if they wanted to for fan service, but decided to just keep them in this side story universe. I guess they didn't know how well Rogue One would play out, so killing them off would have probably been the safe bet.

  • It was alright. The special fx were great with exception of the CGI faces. The plot was, well, non-existent, which made the movie drag on and not very interesting in that sense. I did like that there were way more creatures/costume design in this one though compared to Force Awakens. Overall, it was good, but these movies are completely unnecessary and it shows in my opinion.
