    My bad, haha.

Yeah, they could've done that I guess, but don't forget that, side movie or not, Rogue One is still canon. If they went around fighting other missions like you're suggesting and actually winning them, then how would Sidious not take notice? In order to make your idea work, things would have to get convoluted very quickly.

I can see some winning, some neutral... space is pretty big, and I'm sure winning or not, the rebels are sure a thorn up the republic's dark side (failed attempt at a joke here, lol)

In any case, I do see it good on them to try and make everything canon so as to not have to retcon everything later on or make it confusing. I'm sure it could fit, but for the sake of the other movies, it's probably the best.

Makes me wonder (a bit off topic though): I wonder why they decided to make Shadows of the Empire not canon? It seemed to fit okay between Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi...

  • Out on Blu-ray today. Anyone going to pick it up? I plan on grabbing it on lunch.
  • This is completely off topic but I re-watched the original trilogy and I forgot how damn funny Han Solo is. I always assumed thought of the droids as the funniest characters but man, I was laughing my ass off. You could use a good kiss!

As far as Rogue One goes I did enjoy the movie overall (and of course I'm going to buy it haha) for the effects and all that happy horse shit. I just didn't really care about the story or the characters. It's always great to see Donnie Yen but everyone else was sort of boring.
  • Its a fun dark adventure, but really no deep characters and lack of character depth. But It is a movie with real consequences!

    With you on the story!

    Yeah IP Man gets props!

  • What's the point of taking the time to develop the characters when they won't be used anywhere else outside of this movie? It sticks to Star Wars in the sense that you're dropped in the middle of something and it just goes. We don't know these people and it doesn't matter. They're expendable.

Anyway, I did go pick it up while I was out. They had it in a locked case (for single movies) but the registers didn't have the tool to unlock them... I had to wait for someone to come up and open the movie. So fucking weird and annoying. My wife hasn't seen it and my daughter loves her Stormtrooper that is her height so I plan on watching it again when I get home. Considering bringing the download code up with me so I could have it playing on my phone in the background... but I don't know if I'd want to watch it twice in the same day.

There are plenty of movies that aren't a part of a bigger series that have well developed characters.
  • My point is that these people are insignificant. And if it is a standalone, of course you want your characters to be better developed. This is just a side story about people no one ever talks about.
  • I guess there's a reason no one talks about them, they're boring haha I'm having a flashback right now drinking with my friends, they all think this is the best star wars movie and it boggles my mind.
  • For a Star Wars movie? Yeah, I'd say it was up there. Empire Strikes Back is really the only great movie in the franchise.

Just ordered my steelbook! Looks so good!

  • Yours looks much cooler than mine.  There isn't a Best Buy around here so I bought the Wal-Mart exclusive.

  • I preordered the Target version. ( http://www.target.com/p/rogue-one-a-star-wars-story-target-exclusive-bonus-disc-3d-blu-ray-dvd-digital/-/A-52235269 ) I'm a sucker for star wars so I'll probably order the Best Buy version as well.

As for the movie, 3.5 months later, I still think it was good. I seem to be one of the few people that didn't mind the CGI at all. It was nice to have it tie directly into the beginning of A New Hope. I don't know if I prefer TFA or RO more. TFA had that Star Wars drought hype backing it, so it made the viewing experience more magical. I saw both movies in theater 4 times each, but for TFA there were some parts that were just really boring and unnecessary (the Rathtar sequence is the one that sticks out). I don't remember having the same thoughts about Rogue One. I felt it was much more exciting. I loved the ending scenes for both movies.

On an somewhat unrelated note, I'm really excited for Episode 8, but my expectations for the Han Solo film are super low. I welcome more Star Wars movies, but I think they should focus on non-movie characters. Having someone other than Harrison Ford as Han Solo, or Donald Glover as Lando... I just do not see that ending well.
  • Donald Glover as Lando is fucking ridiculous. I like the guy but I don't see him pulling it off.
  • I have a question that hopefully someone has an answer to. In Rogue One, why did the death star laser cause expansion and for the ground to lift? A coworker explained this to me once and it had to do with the way kiber crystals actually work, but I can't recall the explanation. Does anyone else know?

The way i understand it and have debated with friends is that the Director slowed it down for Dramatic Effect!

  • Sure... there is the spectacle of it but supposedly there is a reason it does that in universe. You can tell it's not in slow motion because people are moving in front of the expansion and witnessing it happen that way.
  • was funnin!
  • I know. It's just bothering me that I can't remember. And google is not helping. I don't want to go ask him again.

All I remember is that the Death Star only fired a a fraction of its full capacity. I'm not sure about the reason for the ground lifting and falling but it looked really cool
  • Just saw the movie for the first time last night and I loved it. How far CG has come to make Leia and Tarkin is amazing. The new alien species were fun and added to the universe, and I loved the little throwbacks to the characters from A New Hope. Great movie overall, and IMO one of the best in the franchise.
  • Yep, I agree. I wasn't a big fan of CGI Tarkin and Leia, but about it being one of the better ones. It had a darker tone and was almost a war movie. I feel like when Lucas originally wanted to do like 12 Star Wars movies this was what he intended. Movies that went off on tangents and weren't about the force and all that. My wife, however, said it was extremely boring. Oh well. My daughter was excited seeing so many 'Pews' on screen and almost everytime K-2SO was on scream she yelled 'It's a robot!'.
  • I was considering picking up a copy today but not sure if I want to just hold out for a director's cut release.

    I hate double dipping.
  • Do you think there will be one?

I don't know, but there were definitely scenes that were cut/changed before its release because Disney thought it would make the film too grim.

  • Eh... Did The Force Awakens get a new release that added more bonus features/cut scenes? I personally wouldn't hold out expecting Rogue One to get a better/more expansive home release.

I thought of that, but Rogue One was a bit of a special case that did get altered from the original vision by Disney.

You're probably right though, especially seeing as there hasn't been any plans for a special release for TFA.  Actually, track record shows any special director's cut releases to Star Wars films have actually been detrimental to the movies.  See original trilogy special editions lol.
