I could never get into Street Fighter, I didn't like having to hold a button to do a special move. Like for Guile's Sonic Boom you have to hold away for 1 second and then you can do the rest of the move. If I want to do a special move I don't want to wait while holding a button, fighting is time sensitive. I'd rather just press the buttons instead of holding them.
When it comes to the original game in each series: Street Fighter over the original Mortal Kombat. MK feels weak compared to SF and didn't really gain it's bearings until MK 2 came out. MK3/UMK3 was the final icing on the cake and my favorite of the first 3.
Everything after their original games, I say Mortal Kombat. There were some hiccups such as MK4 and Sub Zero Mythologies but eventually MK came back to what made it good. The PS3 MK is under rated but not phenomenal and MK X (XL is X with extra content) on PS4 is the best fighting game I've played in years.
Surpised by the results. I am a street fighter guy, but figured it would be a close vote with Street Fighter in the minority. I always thought there were way more MK fans.

The original Street Fighter isn't very good either. SF2 wasn't the first one.

I know SF2 wasn't the first one. I was talking about the original SF vs original MK. I never mentioned SF2.
I was basically saying how MK didn't appeal to me until MK2 and I didn't really get into it until MK3/UMK3. With SF I only enjoyed the first two games and couldn't get into any since. SF III was so-so, SF 4 just didn't do it for me, and I haven't played SF V yet. Mortal Kombat X (XL is just X with all the extra content/characters similar to a GOTY edition) is awesome though!
As far as most recent release, I gotta say I've spent more time and had more fun playing Mortal Kombat XL than Street Fighter 5. As an overall series though, Street Fighter for the win. M. Bison is my guy...one of my fav antagonists.
Street Fighter 5 kicks off season 2 today with Akuma and holiday costumes. A Christmas money grab for sure, but only available until January 17th!
Question about Street Fighter V: Originally wasn't it stated that all DLC would be free with the game? Why is there a season pass that you have to buy to get certain things? Or can all the things available in the season pass and other DLC available with the in-game currency? That's the way I understood it from the beginning, but I recall seeing things that made it seem certain stuff HAD to be purchased with actual money.

From what I understand, it's shit like the holiday costumes that will cost you actual money (as far as I know they won't be available with Fight Money, but I could be wrong). In regards to the season's pass, it's just if you want to automatically have the new season's characters as they're released throughout the year. You can unlock them alternatively (along with Story Mode Skins) with Fight Money by completing story modes with the characters. That just takes effort and some people would rather pay I guess
Season 2 starts today, oh hell yes. I gotta go buy lion Akuma.
When the game was first released there was no DLC or story mode. Most fighters have seasons now where they release a different fighter every month. Street Fighter V has gotten a lot better, but the latest Mortal Kombat XL might be the best in the series. Original Street Fighter is for sure better then original Mortal Kombat (not that I think MK is bad).

Thats a strange assumption.I remember when MK 1 came out it was all the rage with the digitised graphics and the fatalities you could do with each character. I remember playing it at the arcades with sub-zero, even without good gameplay, which it had anyway.. i would play just for the fatalities.SF II was awesome as well, i cant decide from the two but MK1 was definitely legendary.
For me personally, I play Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 more than any other entry in either series. As far as SF goes, SFII Turbo/The New Challengers is probably my personal favorite.
I didn't really play fighting games as a kid. I voted for Street Fighter, but I think that the new one is garbage while Mortal Kombat X was pretty good.
Mortal Kombat 1 gets a lot of undeserved shit from people that probably never even played the arcade version seriously. Too many people saying it sucks because of the terrible, horredous SNES port, and somewhat less terrible genesis port, but the original arcade release was actually pretty good. That said, Street Fighter II was far superior.
I believe Street Fighter has better fighting game mechanics than Mortal Kombat. I like the characters/themes/stories/everything-but-the-gameplay better in Mortal Kombat, but in my opinion Street Fighter just plays better.
Street Fighter is a real fighting game wizard's fighting game, the game that set the blueprint for deep and complex things to come (Blazblue, Guilty Gear etc) in the fighting game genre.
It's the game you saw Japanese gamers going apeshit for in competitions in the 90's, just because the game mechanics were so tight and so sound, it was the perfect fighting game for competition. Every move had a counter and every strike had a setup, and watching two expert players have a lightning fast game trying to exploit the weaknesses of the other, and to quickly learn their play habits and patterns on the fly was just a thing of beauty.
I remember playing SFII against guys in the arcade and it was basically all about studying your opponents attack habits and quickly figuring out how to exploit the holes in them, and also making adjustment when they exploit holes in your attack patterns. Like "oh this guy likes to walk forward, so any time he gets close, I'll throw him, and he'll walk right into it every time", or "this guy is a jump kicker...ok, uppercut/shoryuken/blade kick/Bison bicycle kick 50 times in a row". Then making those adjustments quickly, and watching it all happen in 15-20 seconds.
I feel like Mortal Kombat just doesn't play as tight. Still love the series though

Agreed and well said. MK1 arcade is beyond classic IMHO.

Having a "block" button sucks.
I was coming to post that block button > no block button. MK will win for me every time.

Really? I find "back to block" just so much more intuitive.

I even named a company I started "World Warrior". Didn't get anywhere and was a big fail, but whatever, haha.

There are some good and bad games in both series, but overall SF is the better franchise.

I much prefer MvC over both.
