I have been playing the new Mortal Kombat and I enjoy playing as Alien. I did not pick up the game originally, but I probably will now. I don't like the different player modes like some characters have weapons with one mode, but not with the other. Sub Zero used to be really cool over the years, but I struggle to play as his character. At least it is a nice game.
I still believe overall Street Fighter is better over the years. I have yet to play SFV, but I will sometime soon.
I find the gore on modern MK to be really off putting, sadly, since I kinda like the franchise.
But I just can't enjoy the new games due to the gore.
Too excessive. I know it is a game and MK is a game know for its gore, but how a fighter walks after having their spine broken because of a special move is beyond me. All that was best left for the fatalities and brutalities.

Even the fatalities are too excissive for me now. They are too gory and brutal, unlike the MK2 ones (MK3 ones were just silly and stupid).
I love the ninjas, the whole concept of the game, but I just can't stomach MK 9 and X.

The gore absolutely became a joke around MK3; the design team went way overboard. I call it "hyperbole gore"; so excessive, it's an exaggeration of anything that could ever actually occur, lol. I.e a dozen rib cages, ten arms, etc.
MKII was the peak of the aesthetic for me, but UMK3 is the tightest, most complete MK title gameplay wise IMHO. I still play it regularly. It's great with friends (who also play) and I swear that game comes alive in a group setting after a couple beers.
MK universe has arguably my favorite characters, designs, and storylines (MK1-MKT, anyway). Hell, all you really need is MK1-UMK3 IMHO!

Great thread, dudes and dudettes!
The gore on MK3 was so absurd it was laughable, indeed. You just couldn't take it serious. They put less effort on it than on MK2 and it shows, with floating hands at Reptile's fatality and other absurdities.
The MK universe is pretty interesting and has cool, deep characters and storyline, which I like a lot. But I wish there was an option to make the screen go fully black during the gory moments like x-rays, fatalities and the new brutalities.
I do like how MK9 and X play, but really, all that almost too realistic gore churns my stomach.

LOL yes, the floating hands!
I haven't played much of anything beyond Armageddon tbh. I've seen some of the newer games and I'm blown away by the depth of detail; I just don't own any modern consoles!
While I appreciated all the novelty and many of the character designs of the Mortal Kombat series, especially as a youth, I always regarded the game play as inferior to the Street Fighter series. Especially with some of the newer games in the MK series, the fighting mechanics and physics can really bother me at times, feeling very rubbery and even inconsistent. To put it simply, the control just feels less satisfying than in the average SF game.
I do love a lot of the MK lore, though. In fact, I'd say I enjoy MK's lore generally much more than SF's.
As for character designs, I like the colorful expressions and styles of SF over MK. I know a lot of MK's design repitition began as the result of simple memory limitations (that's why we have the group of fighters collectively known as the "Skittles Ninjas") but I just find many of SF's characters more interesting in terms of visual appeal and personality.
I was coming to post that block button > no block button. MK will win for me every time.
The block button rules! I also prefer the bat top to the ball top joystick. Mortal Kombat gets my vote.
Ugh. I do not like the presence of a "block" button. It may come from the fact that I played SF first but pulling the stick away from an attack always feels much more naturally instinctive than reaching for a block button, to me. It's also slower.
Also, MK3's "Run" button can chew on the fattest part of my @$$...
When I was younger, I preferred the "bat-top" arcade stick but these days I find myself preferring the "ball-top".
Going for the underdog Mortal Kombat, don't get me wrong I like Street Fighter as well, but those two aside I'd rather play King of Fighters,Samurai Shodown,Last Blade etc on Neo Geo for some 2d fighting.

Street Fighter. Aside fatalities, all the characters felt the same in MK. Also Street Fighter has Cammy
Cammy's pretty awesome! I played a lot more mortal kombat as a kid, but as an adult I appreciate the solid mechanics of street fighter so much more.
Lore: Mortal Kombat
Characters: toss-up according to taste

Agree with you there. It killed the game.
Grew up on MK and never really got into SF.
Do yourself a favor and play SF on the SNES. Add this to your NY resolution list.
