When you say "PSX", do you mean the combo device (DVR/PS1/PS2) or the console that only played PS1?

Just the original console. I didn't know there was a combo console made. Then again Sony has a reputation of putting backward compatibility into just about everything.

He's asking because "PSX" is a distinct console from the original Playstation, that was later dubbed PS1 when the mini console was released, but was never officially PSX.

This is the Playstation guys' go-to pedantic acronym discussion

  • PS1 was and still is amazing. Beautiful rich color palette, can handle transparencies very well, redbook audio and a great sound processor, longer video cutscenes thanks to cd media, ... it was a dream to bring all these things together at once.

I think many of the games are timeless. Especially the RPGs and 2D games. The 3D games don't look great by today's standards, but that doesn't mean they aren't still fun. Looking at you, Twisted Metal 2.

I have heard people badmouth the PS1 a little bit on Facebook, but it seems like it's the vast minority of people. Most folks have a hard time insulting a console with the likes of Suikoden II and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
  • How could I forget Symphony of The Night?

It's worth owning a PS1 for that title alone.
  • I still have my original PS1. Sadly, the last time I got it out, the laser was going bad on it. I played through RE2 several months ago and had a blast. It's still a fun system.

The original PlayStation was called PSX* by the gaming press and was sometimes used as the retail code.  It was not called PS1 in 95' because who knew there would ever be a PS2?  Only retroactively did people start calling it the PS1**.

*Not to be confused a hybrid system/dvr combo that came out in Japan only.

**Not to be confused with the PSone, which was a slim model redesign that you could hook up a mini screen to.

If someone says OG Playstation, PS1, or PSX, they are prob talking about the same thing.

  • I have the original PS1 startup theme set up on my PS4 menu. I really wish Sony didn't do away with the backwards compatibility. I find it really irritating that I have to have 3 generations of playstations hooked up. I loved the OG PS1. Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, tactics, the Resident Evil trilogy, Twisted Metal, Legend of Dragoon, Fear Effect, Chrono Cross, Pa Rappa, Crash Bandicoot, Sympony of the night, and that's just what immediately comes to mind. The system was just a shmup and RPG machine. So many great memories. The 3D games don't hold up so well but they clean up real nice with the adjusted settings on the playstation sequel consoles. I still remember thinking Sega was getting it's whooped and the saturn was a 100 bucks more. I also remember just playing the demo disc and feeling jipped I had to invest in some memory card to save my progress when I actually started to get games.
