New here - working on a SNES collection

Haven't been at it for long. Maybe 3 months since I saw someone selling a SNES console on craigslist with a few games that brought me back some great memories from my childhood. Im picking up any locals that I can and trying to grow my collection of loose carts with labels in the best condition possible.

My most valuable carts so far are:

Megaman Soccer

Secret of Mana

Final Fantasy III

Final Fantasy II

Super Mario All Stars

Super Mario Kart

The Legend of Zelda: A link to the past (x3)

Donkey Kong Country Trilogy

Super Mario World

Super Mario World 2 : Yoshi's Island

Mortal Kombat Trilogy (no ultimate yet   )

I have probably about 95-100 games in all so far with 65%+ being junk/undesirables. Just picked up this 33 game lot on ebay full of useless titles for $69 just to build up the collection

I will be using the cover art from thecoverproject.net to furnish some universal game cases while I grow everything. Currently have about 1/3 boxed up and ready to go on the shelf.

Just picked up another Ebay lot of some carts that appear to be good condition but are mostly undesirables. Already had killer instinct and the only carts I was interested in otherwise are Final Fight and Total Carnage. The ones listed below ran $40 USD w/free shipping. Priced out seperately on ebay I came up with a total individual sales price of $81 so I think thats considered a win.

CAL RIPKEN JR BASEBALL

FINAL FIGHT

KILLER INSTINCT

GEORGE FORMAN KO

NBA LIVE 96

KEN GRIFFEY JR WINNING RUN

SUPER BASES LOADED 2

NBA SHOWDOWN

MADDEN 96

MADDEN 98

TOTAL CARNAGE

  • Are you going for a full set?
  • I would someday like to have all the carts as part of my collection but cannot say how long that will take or if its really feasible at all. A website i saw said all loose carts currently total a value of something like $17.5-18K and barring getting some pretty amazing deals that seems like a long time of collecting haha. I've got quite a bit already invested but cannot say the exact amount yet without going back and looking at all the different lots I have picked up. I would guess somewhere in the realm of $900-1100 so far which includes 3 consoles, 7 controllers and all those 95-100 games.
  • Now we have quest4nes and Quest4SNES? Oh well, good luck on your collection though!
  • Yea I saw his username and thought that was funny. Definitely not intentional, its just the first thing that came to mind when I was registering. I take it he must be a regular since you recognize the name so quickly lol
  • Change your name

    Good luck on your set
  • Welcome! Keep your name, and while you're at it take his avatar to add to the confusion

Haha dont worry - I will change up everything so it looks quite obvious I am not you. Besides, you are obviously an old timer here - no one will confuse me with someone of your stature!

  • Welcome, cool username it fits your agenda perfectly.

Thats the way to do it. Buy in bulk early on! Welcome and good luck!
  • I'd consider one of the more premium cases as opposed to UGC, but they are pricier and harder to acquire. Worth it though imo.

I also run an SNES contest and a "beat all the SNES games" thread. You should check them out.
  • Hi, nice to meet you!

First off, good luck with the quest. I hope you have as much fun collecting as me.

Regarding full sets, here is my advice: You should decide if you want a full set or not, period. If you don't think you will ever go for this goal, IMO there is no point in bulking up your collection with filler / crap titles. Best to either go for it all, or just get the stuff that you actually want. Otherwise, you end up in the awkward position of having a collection that is not anywhere near complete, and also consisting with a lot of filler.

Either way, welcome to NA, and good luck!
  • Good luck.
  • You should have been SNESQuest, and made a photoshopped version of the SeaQuest tv show logo as your avatar
  • Great name and welcome to the site.
  • 100 games and no Turtles in Time? The Hell man, lol j/k. Welcome to Nintendoage.

Too bad you didn't wait until Feb 21 to join, to really add to the confusion.

Here is another vote for "borrowing" his avatar

  • I just currently completed my 268th edition to my collection with Operation Logic Bomb. When I started, I already had almost all of the valuable RPGs on the system (barring Harvest Moon, EVO and Earthbound), and Megaman X2 and X3, Demon's Crest, etc., all of which I procured cheap in the early-mid 2000s. I then collected a lot of carts in the $40 range in 2015 and 2016 that are now about $80 (Skyblazer and Jetson's, I'm looking at you).

SNES collecting is a beast, good luck and have fun! I'm only procuring the games I want to play now (which is a very large number). I will continue collecting until I grab the last 100 or so titles I want, but I doubt I'll ever spend the $3000 it'll take to grab like the 10 most expensive titles. I really don't want to indulge in a library of hundreds of lame sports and party games either, and definitely not Barbie lol. Definitely look out for great deals, and try to utilize local resources if you can as ebay buy it nows can be pretty obscene. Also, if you do choose eBay to do the bulk of your shopping, your strategy of buying lots at cheap will work for the common titles. You can even try to resell the lots and make your money back, making commons very cheap. Keep your eyes peeled for lots of rarer titles as well, sometimes people will unload their collections and often times if you don't mind paying a lot for the bulk of the titles, you can get them at discounted rates over buying them separately.

I can definitely understand and you are lucky to have scooped up alot of titles years ago before they became so pricey. Id imagine as time goes on the prices will continue to creep up - they aren't getting any younger! I just got in about 20 or so games from a few different ebay lots and tested them all out to make sure they are functioning properly. I can definitely say I probably won't ever load Mario's Early years: Preschool Fun with Numbers back into my console although I did go through several exercises to make myself feel good about my being able to comprehend and pass a 3 year olds quiz game.

I remember several of the more expensive titles from when I was quite young and my cousin and I would spend hours rocking through games. Demon's crest was a favorite of ours and I am not surprised its a pricier title but am a bit disappointed I will have to wait a bit until I can get a decent deal on a copy. I think this is one of those hobbies where the more you want it at a good price the less likely it is to appear - I am going to just try to stay patient until I can get ahold of one.

Sorry everyone for posting in the wrong forum, lets blame my noobishness this time.

That picture and theme sounds awesome - I wish I would have consulted you prior to establishing my account.
  • Pickup of the day was Contra III. Probably could have done better than $45 but recent sales at a glance on ebay were between $48-60 so I guess i did alright.
