Rumormill: Nintendo ending production of NES Classic Mini
Neogaf user Roarer started a thread to bring attention to multiple Nordic retailers cancelling still outstanding NES Classic Mini pre-orders with the explanation that Nintendo has end-of-life'd the console. He isn't sure if these announcements are unique to the Nordic region, however a later comment in the thread claims this may be world-wide for the reason (given by a Nintendo rep) that Nintendo does not want the Mini to compete with the Switch's Virtual Console.

both are junk anyway
Also, they don't want the mini to compete with the Switch? In what way will it compete? Yeah, it's got the old school games on it, but pffft, so do the handhelds!
If this is true, I don't understand why the forced scarcity. Why wouldn't they just make a shit ton of them and that's it? I always thought the reason they underproduce is so people are talking about and people want it more, they get hyped and whenever one makes it to a store shelf it's gone immediately. This strategy would make sense if you're in it for the long haul, but this was what? 5 months? Makes no sense
Probably because they wanted to keep the price up and not end up like those atari flashbacks which do not sell for much. But even so, this can't cost more than $5 dollars to make, if these ended up at walgreens or something they would have literally been rolling in money. Those crappy nestolgia machines sell. And they made, YET ANOTHER, dumb decision. I love Nintendo and all, but geez, start making sense from a market standpoint.
It just isn't true. It's just an excuse some retailers made when they didn't have the clout to get any unit allocations by this point. A clueless Best Buy employee told me the same thing less than a week after launch -- before they ever got a second shipment. He said they would never receive any more, ever. Guess where I bought one for my niece on 12/20? That very same Best Buy store.
That employee conflated the limited availability of NES Classic Edition with the (correct) rumors that Wii U had stopped production. People on this forum reported Gamestop employees saying the same thing.
This is just the same rumor bouncing around and morphing slightly. What's the point of spreading it by making a thread here if you don't have anything more authoritative? It has to come from Nintendo. In general, you know more than these retail employees do. Don't put much weight in what they say.
But if they did stop production for some reason, perhaps they would justify it by all of the added exposure for the Nintendo brand through the holidays. Let's face it $60 a pop isn't going to make or break Nintendo. But if even a fraction of those buyers have rekindled their Nintendo enthusiasm and buy Switches, then that is the true value. They'd get the $300 sale on the Switch as well as repeat sales for future Software.
Well it kind of makes sense, because virtual console is actual pretty popular on there consoles and technically the nes mini is selling the games for 2$(plus a controller, small hdmi, and little emulator box), they charge like 5$ on the virtual console just for a game. So they would kind of devalue them selves.
Then the NES Classic Edition would not have been produced in the first place.
Don't waste a bit of time thinking about this rumor. It's 100% steaming bullshit.
"In November last year, we brought back the nostalgic Famicom and NES home consoles in palmsized versions and shipped the entire quantity of Nintendo Classic Mini Family Computer units we initially prepared for each market. We apologize to our consumers and retail partners for the inconvenience caused by product shortages. Some parts require time to procure, but we are working to increase production."

I would only believe this rumor was real because the Mini was recently hacked. I still don't really think it's true as money is money, but then again, Nintendo DOES have a weird thing about wanting to keep their products in the premium category. I'll believe it when I see it.
Yes, this is a big reason I could believe the rumor mill. Nintendo may not have expected it to be hacked so quickly, or the extent of the hack. At first adding an extra 30 games was a big deal and now it's add every single NES game ever. Nintendo may want to cut that idea off entirely based with how the hacking has gone.
Lol, these are extremely easy to find. It would be an incredibly wise decision to discontinue these as they can easily be modded to include the entire nes library. They are even being modded to play the snes, game boy, and genesis library. Again, very easy to find.
Bullshit. "Very easy" if you devote yourself to it.
Nearly impossible to walk into a store and find one sitting on the shelf...unless it happens this week.

Right, "Very easy," give me a break cool guy. Very easy would be shelves littered with them. Hitting brick seek on the right day, following gaf/reddit/twitter/now in stock feeds constantly does not make it "easy."
I don't believe the NES mini is being discontinued already though. There's so many ways to play the entire NES library that I don't see how the mini affects Virtual Console sales more than any of the other options out there.
Mini being hacked doesn't matter either. Again, there were already other ways to play this stuff. This being another (laggy) option is no big deal.

I agree with you. I think you meant to quote RunningUltra.

Yeah totally did, meant to back you up in your opinion.

I have acquired 47, I set alerts from nowinstock.net and have been alerted each time they have gone on sale somewhere online. I sccoped 9 last week, 5 from prime now, 3 from best buy online, 2 from gamestop online. You can be as butthurt as you want but I even posted all the information on another thread how to get one easily. Sure you cant go into store immeaditley and get one, but if you set an alert you can easiliy scoop one

What price are you reselling them at?
As some have mentioned, my local Target, Wal-Mart, and Toys R Us stores no longer have the SKU displayed. Best Buy and Gamestop are still getting units that trickle in. I was worried until I got one a few weeks ago, that the Mini production would stop at some point.
We all know it makes sense, but Nintendo loves the fact that their items have value and demand. I could easily see them stop production some time this year.

Nobody is butthurt, I have one for myself and have been able to get a few for family and friends. Not everyone has access to a computer or their phones durning the day because of jobs/school/family. You obviously do, which is fine, but you are coming off as a jerk. Your snark isn't cool.
EDIT: It'd be "Very easy" for others to get locally/online if people like you weren't buying 47 and flipping them. Not condeming what you're doing, it's just a fact.

"Easy" does not mean you have to constantly monitor stock for the region from a third-party service.
"Easy" means you drive over to any brick-and-mortar store with an electronics section and pick one up.
"Easy" means you go to Amazon.com / Target.com / Toyrsrus.com / Gamestop.com / Walmart.com / etc and buy for MSRP.
"Easy..."
[edit]
Yeah. Not "butthurt" here. I got 2 at launch (1 from Walmart and 1 from Target). I planned to keep one on my shelf and use the other, but I sold it at-cost to a coworker a few days later when I realized they were still nearly impossible to get.
